I started listening to AFI in 8th grade because I related to the music so much. I was severely depressed, unfortunately, but thankfully because of these guys and a straight-edge friend, never picked up drugs or alcohol. Sadly, halfway through my freshman year, I started using and quickly developed a drug and drinking problem. I lost track of those values. I went to rehab and have been clean for over 2 and a half years now. Quit smoking (for the last time!) on New Year's day.
Everything we understand, see, and re-hash, is not so black and white. Drugs aren't for everyone, but we can not allow Davey to make us feel like we are doing something wrong just because of his personal experience.
@backwardgravity you speak in terms of irony. He never spoke that what you are doing is wrong. Nor did he outwardly say you would amount to nothing and should feel bad. All he said was that it wasn't for him, and he cannot fathom how drug use would be pertinent to his life and goals. I am straight edge from that same realization moment that he was. I don't hate people who do drugs, I have friends that do, yet I abstain and feel it is the best for me.

drugs and alcohol make everyone less than they really are. They can change your life for the worse in one night, and I think that most people don't learn until that happens to them. Even then they still don't always learn. I just recovered from alcohol poisening. I went out last night in Liverpool and drank tea and lemonade, and played in an arcade til 3, and had a great night. I'm not going to drink anymore. So I guess I'm striaght edge now.
Davey is condescending and ignorant. He admits a lack of compassion and knowledge of the variety of reasons people are attracted to or get hooked on drugs. He assumes it's a reflection of intelligence or moral virtue to the point of disgust and hatred. What's a drug? Anything that makes a person feel good enough that they seek it again. I'm pretty sure Davey has his vices. Looks like he's gotten way too into himself.
@LavenderBlume It isn't condescending to my understanding, he speaks with key words such as "I found" and "I feel" not "what is" and "this is". He seems to be more concerned for the drug culture within the punk and hardcore movements, this I am taking from tone of voice and personality of how thoughts are communicated. Personally I find his attitude positive, focused and grateful for the decisions he's made and it shows how dreams do come true if one follows their heart honestly.

Much respect for clean lifestyles. It takes a lot of devotion not to fall victim of temptations, especially in a society that embraces over-consumption. I have listened to the words of Davey and AFI for almost 13 years now and I have taken in quite a bit. I quit drugs and alch' at 19. I can't claim I'm straight edge but I don't believe in over indulgence and I definitely don't think a human being should ever try coke or heroin. I never have but I've witnessed it's destruction many times.
I love hardcore and I don't drink, eat meat, or do drugs. However I also don't claim strait edge. The reason behind that is the huge amount of self-riotous, condescending douche bags who are apart of that whole scene. I have always respected Davey Havok since I started listening to AFI in 2002. I find it so refreshing that he can be completely open and stand up for what he believes in when it's definitely something that is against the current if you will, in the music industry. AFI is as old as me, and it's fascinating how it's grown and developed and changed over the years, much like I have, and I have the most respect for the band members of this band. Not only for what they do, but for who they are.

I loved afi in highschool, everything before decemberunderground and after their uninspired adolescent punk days. The guitar parts in miss murder were cool, but that's about it. Sad to say but the fire died. I guess it must go out sometime. Every performer reaches a climax and then declines, so maybe this is all natural. Some drugs, like hallucinogens, actually heighten senses for most people. In any healthy person this evokes pity, not disgust.

drugs and alcohol make everyone less than they really are. They can change your life for the worse in one night, and I think that most people don't learn until that happens to them. Even then they still don't always learn. I just recovered from alcohol poisening. I went out last night in Liverpool and drank tea and lemonade, and played in an arcade til 3, and had a great night. I'm not going to drink anymore. So I guess I'm striaght edge now.

Davey is condescending and ignorant. He admits a lack of compassion and knowledge of the variety of reasons people are attracted to or get hooked on drugs. He assumes it's a reflection of intelligence or moral virtue to the point of disgust and hatred. What's a drug? Anything that makes a person feel good enough that they seek it again. I'm pretty sure Davey has his vices. Looks like he's gotten way too into himself.

@LavenderBlume It isn't condescending to my understanding, he speaks with key words such as "I found" and "I feel" not "what is" and "this is". He seems to be more concerned for the drug culture within the punk and hardcore movements, this I am taking from tone of voice and personality of how thoughts are communicated. Personally I find his attitude positive, focused and grateful for the decisions he's made and it shows how dreams do come true if one follows their heart honestly.

I watched my dad die because he drank to much, my closest friend hanged herself, I see ppl turning to drugs and drinking as either a catharsis or way to fit in, and I don't like it. and davey has admitted he has vices, He has said when he was younger he was intolerant of pop music and now he says he does listen to some of it. everyone has vices i think its how we control them, is the issue.

@fresh098 Not everyone drinks and does drugs to fit in or be cool. For some people its an escape, but a lot of people just do it for fun. Drugs arent a good thing, but theyre not as horrible as people think too. Just respect people's believes and actions and dont be biased towards them. Not all stoners are worthless, lazy slackers or addicts and not all sxe ppl are self righteous dicks.

Much respect for clean lifestyles. It takes a lot of devotion not to fall victim of temptations, especially in a society that embraces over-consumption. I have listened to the words of Davey and AFI for almost 13 years now and I have taken in quite a bit. I quit drugs and alch' at 19. I can't claim I'm straight edge but I don't believe in over indulgence and I definitely don't think a human being should ever try coke or heroin. I never have but I've witnessed it's destruction many times.

I love hardcore and I don't drink, eat meat, or do drugs. However I also don't claim strait edge. The reason behind that is the huge amount of self-riotous, condescending douche bags who are apart of that whole scene. I have always respected Davey Havok since I started listening to AFI in 2002. I find it so refreshing that he can be completely open and stand up for what he believes in when it's definitely something that is against the current if you will, in the music industry. AFI is as old as me, and it's fascinating how it's grown and developed and changed over the years, much like I have, and I have the most respect for the band members of this band. Not only for what they do, but for who they are.

I loved afi in highschool, everything before decemberunderground and after their uninspired adolescent punk days. The guitar parts in miss murder were cool, but that's about it. Sad to say but the fire died. I guess it must go out sometime. Every performer reaches a climax and then declines, so maybe this is all natural. Some drugs, like hallucinogens, actually heighten senses for most people. Yes, there are people who drown themselves in drugs to escape certain things in their life... why does this trigger disgust in you? A fellow human being, your human brethren, is suffering. In any healthy person this evokes pity, not disgust.

If there was such a thing, why would one person be able to have one drink and stop for the night while another isn't satisfied after downing a 5th of jack?
