No...It's Billy Cobham's Stratus.......and while Billy was once part of the John McGlaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra this song is STRATUS...............
This is from the "Live at Ronnie Scott's" blue-ray disc......cool stuff indeed. "Eternity's Breath" from Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Visions of the Emerald Beyond", where Narada Michael Walden gave an incredible performance back in 1976. "Stratus" wasn't too bad either, from Billy Cobham's "Spectrum"...............all present and kicking serious ass!!!
@bradm1975: Brad, if you didn't know, Mr. Beck does TONS of guest studio work for other top-notch artists, and, I think, therein you'll find some of his very best performances. He's played (not just screaming solos, either, but, yes, some of those, too!) on records by Seal, Jon Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, and many others. His short, terrific solo on Rod Stewart's "Infatuation" a few years back REALLY sticks in my mind. Two notes into a 12-bar break, and you just KNOW who that lead guitarist is.
@zildjian5o5 it's a pastiche. i was wondering what the second tune was! first one definitely is mahavishnu 'eternity's breath', i have that album. needs choir tho!
Even though I believe Beck would be better served if he was a sideman as opposed to being the frontman, I have to say I wish more rock guitarists today had his playful and adventurous spirit, his humour, his fire... It's a shame really.
Looking for these clips from the Ronnie Scott's show, I expected that Beck would be outstanding, and I wasn't disappointed. What I didn't expect were the tremendous performances from the rest of the band members. I'd never heard of them before. But I sure as hell know who they are now. Watching Tal Wilkenfeld is a lot of fun. Her bass lines kick ass, she looks like she's having so much fun, and she is clearly in awe of Beck. Can't blame her.
One of the things that makes this whole series so great is you can see them having fun. I just ordered the DVD. I want the vid for Blast From The East. Amazing bass riffs.
OK, I'll risk the flames . . . the Ronnie Scott show is fantastic except for 'Eternity's Breath'. They clearly struggle with capturing the 'alternate' time signature in which it was composed. Mercifully, it's a short excerpt and they move on to what is obviously more comfortable turf in 'Stratus'.
Original Mahavishnu version available at: =v4K1VxNg9Bc. In that one you can really feel the pulse.

"Stratus" starts about 1:26 in. The top is "Eternity's Breath" from Mahavishnu's Visions of the Emerald Beyond.

@dansteely77 Also, another great tune he played on, Imogen Heap's "Say Goodnight and Go." It's Jeff playing the guitar part.

The problem with Jeff, he'd crack the skull of his headman with his Strat.
Of course, he could not be a headman after that.
And Jeff would be playing jailhouserock.
No hotrods in jail. He would not want that.
