BEST ANSWER on this subject: I do not like to get in the habit of saying one style is better than others. In regards to karate as a sport-I believe tournament compeition, that while it has some benefits, it does create a mindset and habits that will not work for actual combat. I also agree that when you can not attck the joints, eyes, throat, fingers, groin, etc that a true martial artist would not be able to effectively use their style.
Very rudimentary bunkai, he give little to no acknowledgement to the turns. The opening move has a very specific hand positioning, it's not just a twin knife hand guarding block (for lack of a better term) as he does it. And there is also no way that it's simply a flinch repose like that. Additionally, interpreting mirroring mountain blocks as simply single move blocks is half baked.
Quiz: I always would like to know this answer: In a real fight to defending his life, who has the winner's advantage? A master of karate with full knowledge of kata's bunkai and makiwara experienced or a Wing Chun master trained in wooden dummy (mudjong).
why is there several ways of doing the end of this kata....the sweeping feet and hands in hirokazu kanazawa bassi sho....who changed what and when?... and why....why not just stick to one version
@Carl2 Both bassi dia and bassai sho have been interpreted and changed to fit the will of their interpreters over the years. Do a little bit of research and you'll start seeing the different versions. I think there's 5 main stream
Do not confuse the credibility of karate with those who are not able to practice. The black belt does not read the mind of the attacks, but who the defender has an advantage and, if he knows how to neutralize the attack, may make his defense in an action designed to render harmless those attacks him.
I really like some of these bunkais. But I don't know how the practitioner will be able to start the blocking motion before the attack even starts. Maybe black belts can read minds.
this is exactly the kind of crap that makes ppl think MMA is better than traditional karate. i dont know how you get your ranks but more knowledge of the kata application is necessary. i am a shodan and my application would blow that crap to the moon- and i dont even train often. all i am saying if anything is that these so called sensei only really know kihon and their katas poorly reflect application and as a result their kumite has to resort to being a brawl. very poor :(
@mfuji02 I regret the error even if it is clear that I wanted to write "technics". I'll try to make a video. I'll note, for example, as the first block technique has no effect on the opponent but only serves to avoid the "oi-tsuki jodan. I ask: but at this point what the opponent does? Is he afraid? Why should not attack any more? Do not know what to do? You know you give me an answer?
Mister Funakoshi, according to my grandfather, was one of the toughest guys in high school. Nothing to do with Karate, just straight street fighting. Many people can confirm this as true in hawaii, it is well known that the funakoshi family was a tough bunch before his Karate era. All i here at the "OLD TIMERS PARTIES" is "funakoshi, tough bugga" my grandfather isnt in martial arts, just a high school classmate. He also played football in high school with my grandfather.
sensei funakoshi dared to do something different than the normal jka shotokan like devolping the shorter zenkutsu dachi for instance this version is much more circular and less rigid the other versions master kanazawas version for instance. this is just my opinion.
like all kata there are usually more then one and sometimes many explanations for every move. This movie showed some ways i would never think of first because they are simply not the obvious ones or that good for that matter, however i do like seeing personal interpretations of katas and how bunkai should be performed in the eyes of others. so thank you for uploading this.
A fine example of how not to either practice Bassai-Sho or take any notice of the VERY poor bunkai. How on earth does Kenneth Funakoshi ever believe that this is Shotokan karate. It puerile and pointless.
bassai sho is a kata used to teach sweeping and unbalancing your opponent. Why is there none of this shown? Like O uchi and Ko uchi gari, many of the techniques in this kata are the exact movements you would find in judo. I know every technique could have several different applications, but give me at least one sweep I want to see someone hit the ground.

@zkwski I understand there are a crap load of versions for Dia and Sho. Can ya trace back versions to specific instructors?
Carl2 2 months ago
@Carl2 No that's about as far as my knowledge goes back on the subject. I'm sure there's some semblance of lineage if you know where to look though.

Very poor techics application. Most of the techniques applied have no effect on the opponent. Disappointing

Worst defence against a bo I can imagine short of taking it in the face :/ The rest was great but the catching of bo made me cringe.

Primitive interpretation and rather floppy execution of the kata.

Hmm, I guess the staff catching part must have been concieved by someone with no thumbs. But then we've seen his idea of "regular speed".
This video is very useful for those who can't visualise someone puching while stepping back, or want to see exactly what a 9th Dan grade is worth.
