I've yet to watch the anime, but I read the Saikano Manga series. This reminds me of Chise's love for Shuuji. It definitely is the last Love Song on this Little Planet.

My mind becomes a blur when I think about Saikano. It's so beautiful and heartbreaking that I have no words. I'll never forget the impact Saikano had on me.

Chise is not technically alive her mind and spirit are "alive" but her physical body was vaporized with the rest of the world. She protected Shuji so that he could survive and created a fantasy world that mimiced the life the once had that world was not real. She was trying to keep him from being lonely.
