You can get that volume effect from a Boss SG-1 (Slow Gear) or BYOC Lazy Sprocket, I'm pretty sure they probably use them live. You'd still get the pick attack from messing with the master volume, the pedal i'm talking about specifically kills the pick attack.

Yes, its the overdrive, like all the rest of the song. So, Thrice use the master volume in studio to do a fade in, This is for that, that we don't hear the attack of the note on the cd.
