It's a music based on the vocal type,so you must "sing" fantastic enough with your instrument. I don't think Navara's "singing" is touchy, just too fluently, I must say.....
@Garlos888 how can you hate on Navarra? You spelled Navarra wrong btw. He is a legend, a true legendary player. I really dont think you can criticize him unless you can play the second variation exactly like he can.
@Jooseef95 Ok listen you music critic..... The cello is not a tempered instrument like the piano so it would be foolish to play tempered...... Every player has his own intonation . And if you my simpleminded friend play tempered on the cello you are an idiot.... Also old recordings have an effect on the sound quallity including the intonation..... I do admit there are 1 or 2 false tones but the whole experience is just mind blowing . And don't get me started on the bow technique .. Shmuk
This was on Navara's LP "Cello Colors," which I bought around 1960. It was one of my favorite recordings. Sadly, my ex-wife kept it when we split--and I've never been able to buy a replacement copy. Too bad it is not available as a CD.
Lets hear them to see how close they get to the right intonation. I have absolute pitch and I would not dare to say such thing about such a great artist and musician as Navarra is.
Wow, some bow technique ! ! ! I love that little flick when he takes his bow off the string. There is strangely little movement above the elbow (tho the upper arm is obviously engaged). I don't understand why people are excited about the wrist - it looks like a wrist to me. I see him using the fingers of the right hand in a remarkable way. A slightly supinated bow hold, really interesting.

Yeah there are quite some off-tune notes, but who cares. It's Paganini not Haydn.

I like it and all, but I think that putting vibrato on false harmonics is just overdoing it.

yeah he is a little sharp in a good portion of it but the sound is wonderful (for me at least.)

samething with me. I studied with this great man who was the best pedagogue I know and of course one of all time greatest cellists.

I think cellobaroquelove has a good critique there; he's mindful and is fair.

Look at the transmission of energy in the right side. Effortless. Less is more.

at 1:20 he was doing a richochet bowing with the harmonics. It wasn't perfectly clear, but I think that's what it was.

It's too bad that the pianist plays under the pitch of the 'cellist throughout.

It is ok to criticize the masters. How else can we improve upon their work.

Maybe you should shut up?
This performance is incredible, your comments are rude and ridiculous.

Yes this version is invaluable in that the right wrist is more often visible. Please keep it available.
