Do older full manual lenses work with Nikon D80? I know with D90 work bud I don't know about D80. Today I bought Nikon D80 and I'm going to buy 20 y. old and cheap but good portrait lense.
Hey guys. I'm new to this hobby and I have my D80 and I have a problem... I really need your help... My AF-area mode (02 in my custom setting is disabled) It says 'This option is not available with current settings'... What do I need to do? Please help... :(
@skateboard469 Not sure who quoted you that price, but a D80 is now 2 generations old, so can be bought for well less than 1000 USD. I'd recommend looking at the D90 becuase its replacement the D7000 is out this month.
can you set the D80 to show the shooting information on the LCD screen? Does it support CLS? I'm thinking of upgrading from my Canon EOS 350D to a Nikon D80 or D90.
Does the D80 support Nikons CLS system? I'm thinking of changing my Canon EOS 350D for a D80 (from ebay) can the LCD display shooting information if set in the settings too? Good videos :-)
The standard kit lens for the D80 was the 18-135mm, but this was a non stabilised lens. Please feel free to ask any other Qs on the cameralabs forum - I can't answer here very often.
Nikon, because Nikon's glass is beautiful! and very fast for outdoor, Sony's are ok but never really spent much time with them, i thought they were quite difficult to use. The D80 is a great camera, easy to use, easy to get fantqsic pictures, i have a d40 A d80 and a d2x, the d80 is probably the one a grab as im walking out the door still :-)
I own a D80 and it does NOT have live view although the newer D90 does have live view and its 12.1 mp- but i love my d80 its a great camera. also when you use liveview vrs the viewfinder your seeing a representation of the photo you want to take so please if you use a camera in the caliber of d90 or higher learn to use your viewfinder you will find yourself getting a lot more great shots.
Which Nikon dslr accepts most lenses and has live view? I was after a d60 but it only accepts a certain type of lense and doesnt have live view,, Does the D40x have live view? I need a camera with VR as well.. help? Im a n00b?
The D40, D40x, D60 and D80 do not have Live View. Current Nikon DSLRs with Live View include the D5000 and D90, along with higher-end models. The D5000 and D90 are available in kits with VR lenses. See my reviews at cameralabs . com for full details!
I own a D80 and I can testify that it's an absolute joy to use. However, you should definitely check out the D5000 or other entry level models from other manufacturers. The reason being, the D80 is quite large, it's 2 years old and newer models might offer you more for around the same cost? Maybe...
It's only a good idea to get one if you haven't got an SLR yet. The D80 takes exactly the same pictures as the D40, so if you're considering an upgrade, get an FX camera such as D700 or D3 ;) Still, if you want to get a D80, buy it without a kit lens unless it's the same 18-55 DX VR that comes with the D40, which is excellent and far better than any of the D80 kit lenses ;)

I'm far from an expert at this! But I understand it as if the d80 is more built for professionals while the d60 is more purpose built for photo entusiasts who know a thing or two about cameras.
I'm thinking about getting a d60, seems like a good choice :)

Thanks for your advice Gordon. I checked the verdict and although the 40d is superior to the d80 I think I'll go with the d80 because it is cheaper. And after all I am a newbie and this will be my first dslr. Last semi-pro camera I handled was my dad's old russian Zenit wicha had film...and that was about the age of 12 :-). So i think the d80 is sufficient for me. Don't you agree?
It really depends what features you're looking for, and which system you prefer - I have limited time here on youtube, but again feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
Hi Gordon . I'm having trouble picking a camera. I can't decide between the nikon d80 and the canon 40d. By the way can you tell me the difference between CCD and CMOS? I'm a newbie in photography. I mean is there a big difference in quality or just a slight one? Please give me a pm with your answer. Thank you in advance and have a nice day.
Check out the verdict page of my 40D review at cameralabs . com - I've compared their features there... as for CCD vs CMOS, I really wouldn't worry too much about it. Just look at the results and features of each camera and go for whatever you prefer. Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
I'm deciding between D80 and D90, I want this camera to last me maybe 4-5 years. I do not care much for Live View or Movie Recording that the D90 has, but am wondering if it is worthwhile regardless.
Check out the verdict page of my D90 review at cameralabs . com which comopares them in detail. If you want the extra features of the D90, go for it. If not, go for the D80!
yer a good chap, love yer reviews. i have a question...i got the d60...love it..but i cant frame shots through the lcd...only the viewfinder, is this typical of dslrs? do any of the higher nikon models (d300) etc, frame pictures via the lcd?
Framing using the screen on a DSLR is called Live View, and on Nikon bodies, it's only available on the D300, D700, D90 and D3(x). I expect pretty much every new DSLR to offer it, but sadly you can't retro-fit it on older models...
i've bought this baby in august 2008 and can't complain. but one question - can i use also the older nikon lenses ? even those without autofocus but manual only ? i know nikon has created several lines of lenses marked by different letter in the past. which of the would fit to d80 ? do you have any suggestions which of them would be good ?
so according to tfred2067 the price dropped so much. maybe i'll get it, and since i'm only buying the body it would be a whole lot cheaper. but the VR system seems to make alot of difference from what i heard
so would it be too expensive if i buy a nikon D80 body and a Nikon DX VR zoom 55-200mm? or would it be wiser to buy the Nikon D80 kit?
The 55-200mm is a nice lens, but it's too powerful for a general-purpose model. It's designed to complement an 18-55mm lens. So yes, I'd go for the D80 kit. Check out the lens buyers guide at cameralabs . com and feel free to ask any questions in the Nikon section of the cameralabs forum...
then what about the VR system? coz 1 guy said it works really well so now in my mind i'm thinking that i can't do without the VR system. someone convince my feelings?
Hi Gordon, great review, im buying a new DSLR soon and thinking of getting D80 beacuse im taking photography more seriously and want to do it in collage. But i don't know if i don't need to D80 yet and i would be better off with D60. Or do you think that the D80 would be better for collage and allround photography?
There's quite a few differecnes - I've compared them in the verdict page of my D60 review at cameralabs . com - feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums!
now that this camera has come down substantially in price (from about 1299-799) i think that i am finally going to purchase it. i would go for the d90, but its still a little pricy and i do not really need another video camera or 2 more megapixels
Hi, i am considering to buy one of the dslr: Nikon d60 vs olympus e-510 - if anyone of You guys had it both, please leave me a good advice: what should I buy?
Ive had a D80 for the past 3 months now and about 2 weeks ago I noticed that after I take a photo, or when Im viewing a photo, the camera will momentarily freeze and LED screen will show a flashing "low battery" signal. It happened more frequently as I filled up my camera.
Could just be that my camera has alot of memory and is slowing down. Or should I really get it checked out?
Hi Joe, no it doesn't take videos. The only DSLR which can do video is the Nikon D90, out in the shops this month. The D80 is typically bundled with an 18-135mm lens, while the D90 will be bundled with an 18-105mm lens - but with anti-shake. Please visit cameralabs . com for our D90 preview.
Huh, it got the d80 kit, the exact one you have in the video with the 18-135mm kit. I am now buying a new lens. I am looking into the one you mentioned at the end of this clip (Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR Lens). I got a website and blog with some shots I am taken of my graphic design works. Please check it out. Q-CUBE[dot]COM
Hello gordon, I'm ordering a D80 tonight, but i kinda wonder, is a 2gb memorycard enough? that's whats included. And I wonder, Is the d80 the right camera for me? I'm going to photo mainly Moto-cross, Ice-hockey, snowmobiling.. Pretty fast sports etc.
I'm pretty much a noob(=newbie) in these areas but I don't wanna buy a budget camera
I'm need a DSLR for surveillance work (Taking picture from a block away and capturing the vehicle plate / face etc). Do you think D80 with a 300mm vr will get the job done ?
hey gordon, i have had an FZ50 for over a year and have just bought a D80 first thing i notice is that the FZ50 takes a noticibly ''cleaner'' sharper photo? could it just be the lens? (18-135) or shouldent i be to worried about it?,
Interesting review, but if I were you I`d change viewpoints - that way I think such things would look muuchh tasty ;) Good luck and thanks for the review! ;)
hey gordon, i am a big fan of cameralabs. com. i was wondering if it is true that the d80's successor (the d90 or d10, rumor has it) will be announced sometime in mid september? and i was also wondering if it will be in roughly the same price range?
No it doesn't, but everyone's expecting its successor to have it, and this might be out later this year. So today the 40D is stronger, but who knows what Nikon has up their sleeves! See our Canon 40D verdict page at cameralabs . com for a comparison between it and the D80...
i have a question. how is it that some online dealers are able to sell the d80 for around $400 while others sell it for $500, $800, or even $1000? i know some come with higher end lenses but the prices can be for the same set up. do they replace the hardware with cheap stuff or what? -thanks
Dont get it from Best buy. I got ours from Ritz Cameras and it was about 500$ cheaper (in a kit though....) If you just buy the body it was about 150$ cheaper than at Best Buy!
Yep, click the link to the right of the video window to go to our full review at cameralabs . com -there you'll find the best prices from the most reputable suppliers. Beware of anything cheaper!
I'd like if you actually showed the looks of the cameras you review. A lot of people need to know where the buttons are and how it looks on the sides etc. can you please showcase the camera's physical self in your reviews?
Hi, I provide lots of different views and closeups of the controls in the accompanying full reviews at cameralabs . com. Click the link to the right of the video above to see our full D80 review.
Yep, they can use the same lenses, but the D80 can autofocus with non AF-S models. See the verdict page of our D60 review at cameralabs . com to compare both models...
Hang on, you're asking about a D40 now! The D40 will only AF with AF-S lenses. The D80 can AF with AF and AF-S lenses. If you've any more Qs, feel free to post on the cameralabs forums...
The differences between the D40, D60 and D80 can be found on the verdict page of our D60 review at cameralabs . com. If you also read the reviews there for the D40 and D80, you'll find out everything you need to know!
I'm making up my mind betwwen 3 cameras, Canon 40D - Pentax K20D - Nikon D80, wich of these is best in final results, I mean Image Quality - Functions - Lens overall. Thank you !
You have great instructional videos. but the sound has not the quality it needs. You should use a Lavalier microphone, or a shotgun mic. the sound level is poor and has a lot of acoustic reflections.
Well everyone thought they would do a D80 successor for another show in January 2008 and it never happened, so don't assume it will definitely happen this year!
Well, just wondering - in this review you demonstrate the avaibility to listen to music whilst using playback plugged into the TV. Now, it plays Simon & Garfunkel - in the review at your website you (as far as I understand) say that you cannot load your own songs onto the camera, and there's only 5 songs "locked" in the camera.
Does it mean that it comes with Simon & Garfunkel or have I misunderstood and would I be able to put some Metallica onto the camera?
No metallica I'm afraid! It only has the pre-loaded songs you see on the screen in the video. Sacrborough Fair is actually an old folk song which Simon and Garfunkel covered and made famous - hence no copyright on the tune itself abd why Nikon can include it here.
It might be but as a pro I know time is critical.. And both my D3 and D300 shows ISO in the large viewfinder - and it's so much quicker as well. I definately prefer using the VF unless I'm working on a tripod.
I love ur Reviews Mr. Gordon! Visit cameralabs website for more information! I gotta love ur aggresive marketing technique!:))) After Visiting your website a thousand times, I am now just between D40 and D80? Which one would you PERSONALLY recommend for DSLR beginners. and how quality compares between these two models. Soo Shall I buy D40 or just wait and save money for more complex D80! Thank you and I bet just by this advertsment you increase your website traffic at least 500%:) Thanks
Thanks! It's easier to discuss these questions at the Cameralabs forum though, so could you post your question in the buying a new camera section there? Thanks!
D40/D40x/D60 are choppers.. they have no screw-drive motor in body, so you can't use all lenses properly. Save money for D80. No doubt about this.
Or look at cameras like Pentax K10D/K200D, they are in same pricing level, but a bit better. Weather-sealed bodies with stabilised sensors and user-friendly ergonomics.
did d80 got video ?? plz

does the nikon d80 have a proxmity senesor, movie mode, or rotate info like the d60?
DaNlEe1985 3 years ago
No, no and no!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Hi Gordon,
I'm deciding between D80 and D90, I want this camera to last me maybe 4-5 years. I do not care much for Live View or Movie Recording that the D90 has, but am wondering if it is worthwhile regardless.
Thanks!
locknload27j 3 years ago
Check out the verdict page of my D90 review at cameralabs . com which comopares them in detail. If you want the extra features of the D90, go for it. If not, go for the D80!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Will the d80 Autofocus with the Nikkor AF-D 50mm f/1.8 ?
pasarilecalde 3 years ago
Yes it will. It's only the D40, D40x and D60 which won't AF with non AF-S lenses...
cameralabs 3 years ago
yer a good chap, love yer reviews. i have a question...i got the d60...love it..but i cant frame shots through the lcd...only the viewfinder, is this typical of dslrs? do any of the higher nikon models (d300) etc, frame pictures via the lcd?
anim8r101 3 years ago
Framing using the screen on a DSLR is called Live View, and on Nikon bodies, it's only available on the D300, D700, D90 and D3(x). I expect pretty much every new DSLR to offer it, but sadly you can't retro-fit it on older models...
cameralabs 3 years ago
it doesnt have anti dust system?

How does the Nikon D80 handle dust getting into the body (while changing the lense)?

cameralabs 3 years ago
i've bought this baby in august 2008 and can't complain. but one question - can i use also the older nikon lenses ? even those without autofocus but manual only ? i know nikon has created several lines of lenses marked by different letter in the past. which of the would fit to d80 ? do you have any suggestions which of them would be good ?
vitacit 3 years ago
I've given a brief list in the D80 review at cameralabs . com, but for a definitive guide, see your D80 manual.
cameralabs 3 years ago
so according to tfred2067 the price dropped so much. maybe i'll get it, and since i'm only buying the body it would be a whole lot cheaper. but the VR system seems to make alot of difference from what i heard
so would it be too expensive if i buy a nikon D80 body and a Nikon DX VR zoom 55-200mm? or would it be wiser to buy the Nikon D80 kit?
seezhijie 3 years ago
The 55-200mm is a nice lens, but it's too powerful for a general-purpose model. It's designed to complement an 18-55mm lens. So yes, I'd go for the D80 kit. Check out the lens buyers guide at cameralabs . com and feel free to ask any questions in the Nikon section of the cameralabs forum...
cameralabs 3 years ago
then what about the VR system? coz 1 guy said it works really well so now in my mind i'm thinking that i can't do without the VR system. someone convince my feelings?
seezhijie 3 years ago
Hi Gordon, great review, im buying a new DSLR soon and thinking of getting D80 beacuse im taking photography more seriously and want to do it in collage. But i don't know if i don't need to D80 yet and i would be better off with D60. Or do you think that the D80 would be better for collage and allround photography?
BrainFrezz101 3 years ago
There's quite a few differecnes - I've compared them in the verdict page of my D60 review at cameralabs . com - feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums!

now that this camera has come down substantially in price (from about 1299-799) i think that i am finally going to purchase it. i would go for the d90, but its still a little pricy and i do not really need another video camera or 2 more megapixels
tfred2067 3 years ago
That's a very sensible decision - I've compared the D80 against the D90 in our Nikon D90 preview at cameralabs . com...
cameralabs 3 years ago
can i use the Nikon D80 to broadcast online in real time ?

You mean vide? If so, the no, it doesn't do video or have live view.

Or should I really get it checked out?
jkerrigan1990 3 years ago
does the D80 have any wather sealing? i was going to go for a pentax k200d but now, since the d90 came up the d80 is gona get cheaper. :D
pasarilecalde 3 years ago
does this camera take videos? and would this camera be suitible for an 11 yr old? also, what is the lenssize?
joefig10 3 years ago
Hi Joe, no it doesn't take videos. The only DSLR which can do video is the Nikon D90, out in the shops this month. The D80 is typically bundled with an 18-135mm lens, while the D90 will be bundled with an 18-105mm lens - but with anti-shake. Please visit cameralabs . com for our D90 preview.
cameralabs 3 years ago
thanx!! i will look at ur website!
joefig10 3 years ago
Huh, it got the d80 kit, the exact one you have in the video with the 18-135mm kit. I am now buying a new lens. I am looking into the one you mentioned at the end of this clip (Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR Lens). I got a website and blog with some shots I am taken of my graphic design works. Please check it out. Q-CUBE[dot]COM

i got this camera a few days ago and it's stunning. For £600 from Jacobs Digital including the lens, it was a bargain.
Dahl4life 3 years ago
What lens? It doesn't actually sound like a very good deal to me, of course depending on the lens you got with it.

Mix00n 3 years ago
The D80 is still a great camera, but the D90 is about to come out - compare them in our D90 preview at cameralabs . com.

(18-135) or shouldent i be to worried about it?,

hey gordon, i am a big fan of cameralabs. com. i was wondering if it is true that the d80's successor (the d90 or d10, rumor has it) will be announced sometime in mid september? and i was also wondering if it will be in roughly the same price range?
swissroll99 3 years ago
Hi, there's still no official word, but check the cameralabs forum for the latest news and gossip!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Does the D80 have Live View? Which would you recommend more, the D80 or the Canon EOS 40D?
gaz52 3 years ago
No it doesn't, but everyone's expecting its successor to have it, and this might be out later this year. So today the 40D is stronger, but who knows what Nikon has up their sleeves! See our Canon 40D verdict page at cameralabs . com for a comparison between it and the D80...
cameralabs 3 years ago
i have a question. how is it that some online dealers are able to sell the d80 for around $400 while others sell it for $500, $800, or even $1000? i know some come with higher end lenses but the prices can be for the same set up. do they replace the hardware with cheap stuff or what? -thanks
nlindseightynine 3 years ago
If the price is too cheap, then it's likely to be a scam. See our reviews at cameralabs . com for lists of reputable dealers...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Dont get it from Best buy. I got ours from Ritz Cameras and it was about 500$ cheaper (in a kit though....) If you just buy the body it was about 150$ cheaper than at Best Buy!
jherma01 3 years ago
dont suppose you have any recommendations on wheres the cheapest or best place to get one from ?
hatchzords 3 years ago
Yep, click the link to the right of the video window to go to our full review at cameralabs . com -there you'll find the best prices from the most reputable suppliers. Beware of anything cheaper!
cameralabs 3 years ago
I'd like if you actually showed the looks of the cameras you review. A lot of people need to know where the buttons are and how it looks on the sides etc. can you please showcase the camera's physical self in your reviews?

alemangui 3 years ago
hi love your vids.what do you think is better the d60 or d80 and do they both fit the same lenses thanks.
danbmx14 3 years ago
Yep, they can use the same lenses, but the D80 can autofocus with non AF-S models. See the verdict page of our D60 review at cameralabs . com to compare both models...
cameralabs 3 years ago
dose the d60 only focus with AF-S lenses but the d80 will focus with AF and AF-S lenses.
danbmx14 3 years ago
That's correct. Put a non-AF-S Nikkor lens on the D60 and it will be manual focus only.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Hi, Does this camera have Autofocusing built in? If it does, how well does it perform? Thx.
all4golf 3 years ago
Yes it does - all DSLRs have AF - see our D80 review at cameralabs . com for full details.
cameralabs 3 years ago
I meant like the ability to use older lenses that don't autofocus and the d80 will focus for it.
all4golf 3 years ago
If the lens isn't an AF model, then it will be manual focus only.
cameralabs 3 years ago
So if I put a regular AF lens, not AF-S, on a D40, it will auto focus?
all4golf 3 years ago
Hang on, you're asking about a D40 now! The D40 will only AF with AF-S lenses. The D80 can AF with AF and AF-S lenses. If you've any more Qs, feel free to post on the cameralabs forums...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Ok, so now what makes the D80 different?
all4golf 3 years ago
Nevermind, thanks for your help.

You have great instructional videos. but the sound has not the quality it needs. You should use a Lavalier microphone, or a shotgun mic. the sound level is poor and has a lot of acoustic reflections.

cameralabs 3 years ago
Well, just wondering - in this review you demonstrate the avaibility to listen to music whilst using playback plugged into the TV. Now, it plays Simon & Garfunkel - in the review at your website you (as far as I understand) say that you cannot load your own songs onto the camera, and there's only 5 songs "locked" in the camera.
Does it mean that it comes with Simon & Garfunkel or have I misunderstood and would I be able to put some Metallica onto the camera?
hendriksholm 3 years ago
No metallica I'm afraid! It only has the pre-loaded songs you see on the screen in the video. Sacrborough Fair is actually an old folk song which Simon and Garfunkel covered and made famous - hence no copyright on the tune itself abd why Nikon can include it here.
cameralabs 3 years ago
u can see some info through the viewfinder
dryan2 3 years ago
put your SLR on neckstrap and you'll guess why...
xmeda 3 years ago
Most of the options are also displayed in the viewfinder when you're composing your shot, so you'll rarely need to look at it anyways.
hendriksholm 3 years ago
its more comfortable do have camera in hands and lok at its upper lcd than to look at small signs in viewfinder
xmeda 3 years ago
It might be but as a pro I know time is critical.. And both my D3 and D300 shows ISO in the large viewfinder - and it's so much quicker as well. I definately prefer using the VF unless I'm working on a tripod.
hendriksholm 3 years ago
It's tradition!

WassupBruddah 3 years ago
Thanks! It's easier to discuss these questions at the Cameralabs forum though, so could you post your question in the buying a new camera section there? Thanks!
cameralabs 3 years ago
D40/D40x/D60 are choppers.. they have no screw-drive motor in body, so you can't use all lenses properly. Save money for D80. No doubt about this.
Or look at cameras like Pentax K10D/K200D, they are in same pricing level, but a bit better. Weather-sealed bodies with stabilised sensors and user-friendly ergonomics.
