Tim, you are completely right about appreciating the Disney parks more when you're older. Now as a "grown-up" (lol) I can do all the things in Disney World that I couldn't when I was younger: go on Space Mountain several times a day, eat an ice cream sundae at 2 in the morning, etc. To heck with all the jerks who diss the Disney parks, we know we have it better!
I LOVE this vid sooooo much!!! :D as a huge disney dork , known around my campus as "Disney Girl" people dont get how amazing disney truly is... I worked for WDW as a CP at the emporium for 9 months and think of the place as home... have yet to go to disneyland yet but plan on doing so for next years d23... thanks so much for really explaining the disney love soooo well :)
Well, its more for kids now then it was when Walt Disney built it fifty years ago. Everything has been really dumbed down for dumb little toddlers (adding the cartoons to Tiki Room and Small Room, having to put Johnny Depp in Pirates...all catering to a dumber audience). I'm 16 and suppose to be the target but I'm not the target because I'm not dumb.
I never found characters in any of those attractions "dumbing" them. Honestly, the original Tiki Room bored me as a kid ^^; The only time I find Disney dumbing down is with the whole Princess thing. I mean, it makes it feel like the whole Disney franchise (and fairy tales for that matter) is for little girls or something.
You were bored as a kid so the new version is more entertaining for today's kids, it was dumbed down for that mentality. Walt Disney strove to use new technologies to educate (Trip to the Moon), promote life-style change (People Mover) & bring new forms of entertainment (Tiki Room - the first use of audio-animatronics in 1963) and kids got that. You were bored because you were raised in an environment only to be entertained & demanded nothing more. That's your parents/teachers fault, not yours.
The original Tiki Room was memorable because there was nothing like it, anywhere, and you stepped into a completely different world. The new one really is Aladdin the TV show and your thinking oh Gilbert Gottfried. Disney parks should go back to taking you to a time and place that relies on your ability to imagine, its offensive that Disney doesn't think kids can do that today, even worse if they don't want them to.
I think it's less that they don't think they can handle it, it's that they don't think they WANT it. People simply lost interest in it. (at least in Walt Disney World they did) Frankly, I don't think it really matters since they left it untouched in Disneyland
The original looked real (to a kid anyway) and the show was entertaining to all, including adults who love the theme. The tikis were truly exciting with their chants. There was a sense of being in a very special place that seemed real, not a cartoon. Over time, kids got softer and were frightened by the tikis and rainstorms which were very realistic. The new show is a noisy cartoon aimed at toddlers and chucky cheese kids. The original was a classic, the new show is a straight-to-video sequel.
eh, the original still bored me. In fact as a kid a lot of attractions that didn't have recognizable characters bored me (Keep in mind, I was six) with the exception of Jungle Cruise, It's a Small World, and Journey into Imagination.
And your comment about the rainstorms actually doesn't make sense. I mean, the rainstorms are scary but that Tiki Goddess that shows up in the middle of the new show isn't?
and IMHO, the new show seems less to me like a sequel and more like a parody. And anyway, we should probably count our blessings. I hear Tokyo's got Stitch XD
The Tikis looked like Tiki Bars, if you sat adjacent they were against your shoulder. Tiki music was beating drums, witch doctor chanting, heavy rain on the roof (no lighting effects, just flashes), not rock & roll or Disney, a lot a little kids cried & were frightened (per Disney, I never experienced this). The original was toned down in the 80's. As you say, Disney adds cartoons because kids today lack imagination & get bored when not entertained. They are all turning into Fantasyland rides.
Ah! I didn't know they toned it down in the 80s. That's pretty lame. That's almost as bad as when they took the Pirates chasing the girls out or when the Jungle Cruise skippers had to stop using their guns. >>
I don't mind when they put characters in other rides outside of Fantasyland as long as it fits the theme. For example, I like Jack Sparrow in Adventureland, I like Buzz Lightyear in Tomorrowland, but I find the Princess's in Toontown rather off
i go to disney world and i feel the same way! if i want to go on pirates 4 times in a row, i can! and my mom would be right by my side ready to go! walt built the park for parents and children to go together. so i hate it when my friends say its for kids or babies.
HELL YEA!!!! Tim I gotta ask you a question though... if you like to have fun... do you love six flags magic mountain. Yup... especially the part where you talked about pirates. FUCK YEA FOR DISNEYLAND!!! OH YEA!!!
so much so that I would get a job there just so I can BE there. But I live In Oroville just 50 miles north of Sacramento and it costs 300 dollars just to drive down there then another 100 a night for a hotel and finally 200 for 240 for four people to be there for one day I wouldent gripe about the prices if I lived down there like my Cousin but I don't. :(
So HA! Disneyland is not just for kids... Walt's dream of Disney came from wanting a place where children and adults can have fun together. The end. You win, Babb!
Hahaha, awesome! But Walt Disney even said: "Why do we have to grow up? I know more adults who have the child's approach to live. They're people who don't give a hang what the Joneses do. You see them at Disneyland every time you go there. They are not afraid to be delighted with simple pleasures, and they have a degree of contentment with what life has brought - sometimes it isn't much, either."
Tim, what are the best things to do at Disneyland? I mean, the best rides, the best shows, the best restaurants, etc. Thanks! Love the vids!
