We never kick like this in Shotokan, but I can tell you right away, that you should pull your other leg up, and don´t just leave it hanging in the air.
I notice a wonderfull difference between Kara-te and Tae Kwon Do kicks in this case. The Kara-te kicks, though not delivered with an emphasis on speed flash technique look better and are more than likely more controlled and effective.
I find it amazing that he uses his left leg. I have a hard time doing trick kicks with my left leg :(

I would use pads for the target. If he hits your arm it will break.

@Chigura78 I agree. Karate kicks are not as flashy as in TKD or Tang soo do but they are more beautiful in a "brutal" way.
