@drummer5533 actually mike is the "time keeper" so to speak, matt follows him. also, its not unusual for a band to play and older song faster, 1. to get through it quicker,and 2. you dont have to sustain as much vocally. and by the way, if they really though Dave was better, he would be playing in Pearl Jam still.
