Poor Arnie bunkered his shot, athough his shot (2 iron, also) carried as far as Nicklaus. I wouldn't want to play the irons they played in those days . . . . small-headed blades, almost no hosel offset, no cavity-backs, very little MOI . . . . those guys were really good. Could you see today's scratch golfer hit those 1960's era blades as well as they did?
I've still got an old Staff 2-iron that I can hit like crazy (I was a plus-2 handicapper as an amateur, and a low-level pro), but only because I've had it for the past 23 years...and anyway, I know what you mean. The damn thing looks like the size of a nickel compared to almost anything out there today. Have you picked up a driver from pre-1990 anytime recently? Looks like about a 5-wood, or a small 3. I'll tell you this: It's good practice to go out and hit them.
If Woods did this today with a 2-iron and hit it to twice that length, people would sh$% their pants screaming for him.

Yeah, I think a lot of guys saw that kind of Nicklaus long iron back then and went, "Oh, crap..."

"Short of the pin quite a ways". I love it. The guy nearly aces a 2 iron. That was the early competitiveness between Palmer and Nicklaus.
