Rudolph Serkin in concert playing the last Beethoven Sonata

Das ist eine der ganz großen Deutungen dieser letzten Klaviersonate Beethovens! Altersreif der eine und der andre. Über die Partitur der Missa Solemnis schrieb Beethoven "von Herzen möge es zu Herzen gehen". Ein Wunsch auch für dieses Werk! Nur, wen erreichen diese Werke heute noch? Den Schmerz darüber nimmt die Sonate schon in sich hinein. Der Taube nahm das Glück dieser Musik, unerhört, mit sich sich ins Grab. Was nehmen wir?

Quite an intellectual marvel this performance is. One can lose one's sense of time and space in Serkin's loving hands.

Quite right. Pollini is slightly better in Beethoven, but his Chopin is horrible. Sterile as a neutered nun!

I know what Beethoven was thinking when he wrote this because I walked home from the tavern with him and he whispered to me in my ear what he was thinking. He said it is about a girl on a farm and she needed to go out and fetch some food.
