The anime is only good when they aren't trying to use fillers to take up time when the manga is dangerously close to catching up to the anime. This is the biggest downfall for a lot of anime series. Trigun is probably the best example of this because if you read the entire Trigun/Trigun Maximum manga, it is about 1000x better than the anime. This is due to the anime catching up to the manga and Nightow had to improvise an ending. The anime probably would have been at least 50 episodes otherwise.
