Lucinda was several years too late, the new scoring system would've elevated her to the upper echelons where she belonged. Fortunately, her brilliance is captured forever on video for us to enjoy!
Talk about being Robbed! This Beautifully Talented Figure Skater has been Undermarked and Underscored her entire Skating Career. What a Shame! Such a lovely and talented Skater you are Lucinda Ruh. We LOVE YOU!!!
For once, I TOTALLY agree with Dick Button, he is absolutely right about her charisma, speed, flow, carriage, positions and of course those exhilarating spins!!
She was seriously under-marked. Her second mark should have been in the 5.6/5.7 range, at least. And why the super-low marks for tech? All the marks should have been above 5.
Lucinda is like a fairytale, that's the feeling I get when I see her spin. She just spins me into another world. Just brilliant! That last combination spin was just amaaazing...
I do love her layback--the back position is just extraordinary, probably the best I've ever seen--but her free leg IS annoying. I hate low free legs, in gymnastics and figure skating. Shame she never got the same credit for her spins as others did for their difficult jumps, and I'm sure the fact she wasn't from a traditional skating powerhouse like the US or Russia didn't help her scores.
I love her spins, holy crap!!!! She can spin in any shape or form with a great amount of speed, she's one of the best spinners in the history of figure skating!!!!
...are not going to take your feelings into account.
Actually, there are people whose sole purpose for coming here is to be offensive and nasty to others...
I am just trying to let you know that most likely you have not encountered too many of these types at the figure skating videos, but believe me, they are out there.
Okay. Sorry for going off-topic, but I just wanted to prepare you, because I am a Christian and I do care about you and others, and I am sorry if I was offensive.
i LOVE her, in this program anyways, just fantastic!, i remember seeing her in Canada stars on ice a few years ago, she was awesome , loved her, NO ONE could ever match her spins, my god!!
Yes, but she isn't terribly good as an actor, either. I saw her on a televion show, and she portrayed...gasp...a skater! This even gave them the op to show her skating without seeing her splayed out on the ice after failing to land a jump.
...But my overall feeling is that if you have trouble playing a figure skater as a figure skater/turned actor, what kind of future do you really have?
As good a spinner as Lucinda is, her leg position is not correct on her layback! Dick likes her so much that he doesn't mention it...something that normally he picks apart with EVERY skater!
You're absolutely right. Dick Button is the world's biggest critic of laybacks and spiral positions. I think the reason he doesn't pick Lucinda's apart is because her speed, centering, and arms make up for any deficiency with her leg position. Most skaters who let their legs drop do so out of laziness or lack of skill, but that is certainly not the case here. Her leg hanging down enhances what she's doing. Even Dick Button has to realize when he can't or shouldn't criticize.
Well sorry skatykate, but that is what happens on a public forum.
People speak and give their opinions. I like Sasha's skating but I do think she is bratty.
I don't see why you should take offense at that. None is meant toward you, nor Sasha either. I mean, it isn't exactly a secret or anything.
Anyway, I bring this up because you must learn to deal w/other people's views when you post on YT. Not everyone agrees with each other, but that is part of healthy dialogue.
Kate, honestly the last thing in the world I want to do is to give offense to anyone.
I think you are rather young, and I think you should be aware that people are not always kind on the internet, particularly on YT. You need to be prepared for people who are going to disagree with you, only they will do it in the nastiest and harshest way imagineable.
Truly I am sorry if I made you feel bad by my comments, but please be aware that there are some incredibibly cruel people here that...
of her beautiful spiral...nevermind that she can't land her jumps with any consistency and chokes under pressure.
Can you remember the name of the pretty blonde who couldn't land a jump to save her life? I always wondered how she ended up in the elite group of skaters.
Nicole Bobeck is the skater I was thinking of. She had the lovliest spiral, and when she was "on" she was really on!
Problem with Nicole was a lack of discipline, and because of it she never became the champion she should have been.
I remember watching her at the Centenniel games in Russia. She didn't land one jump! I felt so bad for her, however, if I knew I was having that much trouble landing jumps I certainly wouldn't compete at the top level, which is why I am so curious about her.
I think she went pro after 1998/99 not much is heard from her, but she does do great in tours. I know, she was a great skater when she was ON, she had the skills just and talent, which is why she got to this level, but she wasn't disciplined
Tell me about it! What is it with the Swiss and spins? That country has produced some of the finest spinners. And people have no idea how difficult it is, either.
They are all about the jumps, but I love someone who can spin.
Absolutely. I love well executed spins, and a perfect layback looks like a flower blooming if it is done correctly.
Unfortunately, few can position their leg correctly. Oh, how I have laughed along whilst Dick Button has gone on and on about the correct leg position in the layback... But he's right.
A spin cannot 'travel' and the body has to be positioned perfectly. Like I said, spinning is really the main event for me.
And we've seen great jumpers who neglect spins. Yeah Dick and his free legs, he really obsessed about that doesn't he? LOL. Are you a skater or just a fan?
i love lucinda! she's going out with my uncle and is such a sweetie! it's so strange thinking about her on my couch talking to me about twilight, then seeing her doing all of this amazing stuff! wow.
When Dick says "There are no round shoulders here" that just cracks me up! But it is soooo true, Lucinda had amazing body line and position throughout the program. The stretch on her camel spin is unmatched. Lucinda has world class style...not to mention she is the greatest ladies spinner in the world...if not the greatest spinner ever, man or woman...Lucinda is my favorite female figure skater of all time. Dick Button is soooo enthusiastic about her, he's a hoot when he gets all worked up!
What is it with the Swiss? I mean, they produce the best spinners in the world.
...And you know how Dick Button is, he really judges a person's technique. If your leg is not positioned just so in a layback spin, he will never let it rest! Although, that said, he is correct. As good as Michele was, her layback position was never very good. The positioning of the leg has to be correct for it to be good. Dick has done a great job of teaching the public what constitutes good skating!
That was definitely an under-marked programme. When situations like these arrive, the performers should take over, instead of letting the critic bureauacracy make all the rules. What the commentators said was right: the spins, when you look at the ones like Ruh just did, are more difficult than jumps. Of course, someone who's never stepped on the ice wouldn't know that, and that's why they're worth nothing...
Great for Dick (LOL funny word), but he was indeed LOVING that! (As was I)....her spins are sublime....and she is not a jumper, but WHAT A SKATER!!!!!! Merci Lucinda, merci Dick!
She is Fantastic!!! Her spins are unbelieveable! Dick's right! look at the speed! but what rank did she get??? she fantastic! her jumps aren't that weak in here.... if i were the judges, i'll give her extra points!
Yes, the spins are amazing. Dick Button makes a good point about the difficulty of the spins and how the skaters don't get nearly as much credit for them as they should. I don't know if the new scoring system has improved the situation in that regard.
It has. Skaters like Irina Slutskaya, Alissa Czisny, and Sasha Cohen got much credit for her spins in the new system. But there is still WAY too much emphasis on the jumps :( Spins are difficult as hell, aspecially to do them as well as she did. She would still not fare well though, since the new system is like Gymnastics where skaters can pile on difficulty to make up for their other shortcomings (like poor spin centering/technique/speed/positions/etc.)
Now that is truly great skating, no matter how you slice it. Dick's right, the spinning is first rate, as well as her artistry, talent, etc...So she wasn't the best jumper. Who CARES? I would much prefer her style, with maybe exception to Sasha Cohen. If I were a judge, I'd give her the highest marks, regardless of the jump execution. She deserves more credit for her overall talent and ability for pure skating and entertainment. You go Girl!!
It's a pity she never competed under the new scoring system! She would have got a hell of credit 4 her speed, her spins and the program components! That was absolutely brilliant and the jumps were OK, why did the judges panned her like that?
Why are her tech marks so low? She would score so well in the new system.
