I was in Cambodia this summer and the scars left by this madman are still fresh in Cambodia. Being born in Pakistan and having read a lot about the history of the region and the world in general, I have read about a lot of genocides and seen all manner of atrocities. But Pol Pot's are one of the worst. His existence baffle me. May God make him burn in the most vicious fires of hell and torment and torture him in the ways he tortured and tormented his own countrymen.
Well done, thanks... saw Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng myself just a few days ago. Powerful vibes come from both those places... I met Bou Meng on the way out, one of 7 survivors of Tuol Sleng Prison (14,000-20,000 killed). Bought a book of his memoirs, he signed it and shook my hand, they took our picture together... me standing in stunned silence. What an honor to meet a man who has suffered so much and seen so many others suffer, his wife was killed... And he still manages to smile today.

After the Khmer Rouge were driven from power by the Vietnamese in 1979, the United States and its allies refused to allow the Vietnamese-backed Cambodian government to take the seat of Cambodia at the United Nations. The UN seat, by default, remained in the hands of the Khmer Rouge. In effect, the US & the UN supported the Pol Pot regime. Pol Pot fled to Thailand where he lived for the next six years. Thailand is a US ally.
If you are interested in learning more about the Khmer Rouge and the Killing Fields, and watch interviews with Nuon Chea, Pol Pot's deputy, I suggest Googling 'Enemies of the People' or watching the film's trailer on Youtube. It's a really compelling story of a Cambodian journalist, Thet Sambath, trying to find out the truth about the Killing Fields and why his family died.

He also says, “Look at me now. Do you think I am a violent person? No. So, as far as my conscience and my mission were concerned, there was no problem.” This came from the lips of one of the twentieth centuries’ worst killers! It is certain that people are the most dangerous when they think they are doing the right thing. Millions were disappointed when the 73 year old Pol Pot died in April 1998, before he could be brought to trial.
Pol Pot remained unrepentant for his terrible crimes. After killing the Minister of Defense for the Khmer Rouge and his friend of forty years, Pol Pot was put on trial and sentenced to life in prison. In an interview during his trial, Pol Pot says, “First I want to let you know that I came to join the revolution, not to kill the Cambodian people.”
Pol Pot’s regime is surprisingly similar to the French Revolution, 200 years before. Both revolutions began in the French capitol of Paris. Both revolutions conducted deadly purges, resulting in the death of many. Also, when they took over, both Pol Pot and the French declared, “This is the year zero.” They both made their own 10 day calendar and rejected the thought of any God. Both revolutions were curtailed within a decade.

The Chinese knew all about the Killing. They are the ONLY Embassy in Cambodia in 1975-1978. They supported Pol Pot since Pol Pot didn't have the Power. After took Power in 1975, went to China, came back w/ new name - Pol Pot (real name was Saloth Sar). The Killing starts then. 1.7 million were killed or starved to death. In the late 1978, Pol Pot was used by China again to kill the Vietnamese, if all the killings were successed then China will kill Pol Pot and invade Cambodia, Laos, & Vietnam.

That's the sad thing about what happened in Cambodia, Nazi-Germany, Rwanda, etc. There's a very dark side to human nature and there's little point in saying they didn't know what they were doing. In West Vietnam, US troops would come under attack by Viet Cong guerrillas, and the VC would retreat back across the border into Cambodia. They KNEW that US infantrymen could NOT pursue them across the border, because Cambodia was a "neutral" nation.
The VC had loads of tunnels and paths into Cambodia. These led to massive bases and depots inside Cambodia where the communist guerrillas knew they were "safe" from US counterattack.

Sadly, US military had no authorization to conduct operations in Cambodia due to Cambodia's neutrality.

I have never had to go through such pain, heartache, that I will never know what these people had to deal with. I shed a tear to show that I am here and I do care. A very moving video on a very tragic topic. What is even more tragic tho, is that the attrocities, especially at S-21 were carried out by children. I wonder how they are coping with what they did as adults today.
Sometimes I think of what would've happened had the Vietnamese not intervened in time for these people.

Please note that Vietnam was who stopped the killers in Cambodia. It was China that was allied to the Khmer Rouge, and Vietnam (Vietcong/'Communists') who opposed them.

The Chinese knew all about the Killing. They are the ONLY Embassy in Cambodia in 1975-1978. They supported Pol Pot since Pol Pot didn't have the Power. After took Power in 1975, went to China, came back w/ new name - Pol Pot (real name was Saloth Sar). The Killing starts then. 1.7 million were killed or starved to death. In the late 1978, Pol Pot was used by China again to kill the Vietnamese, if all the killings were successed then China will kill Pol Pot and invade Cambodia, Laos, & Vietnam.

Sorry, but they very well knew what they were doing. That's the sad thing about what happened in Cambodia, Nazi-Germany, Rwanda, etc. There's a very dark side to human nature and there's little point in saying they didn't know what they were doing. Possibly the saddest thing of all is that the leadership of the Khmer Rouge actually thought they were doing the morally right thing.

Communists believe that by force they will be able to control the privatization of companies and services. This is actually the point of communism, while sustaining a socialist point, it is acheived by force. That last point is what is most similar to fascism; their monopolization objective is for an elite group thought to be superior

UCONNgirl, unfortuntely, America did do something "NOTHING".that is, after we bombed Cambodia without approval from Congress/American people. Henry Kissinger played HIS games and have YET to pay the price for what he caused.
"president nixon" and his advisor "kissinger" Did NOT want it known. We did not hear or know anything was happening til it was over,and even then, THEY LIED!

Do you even know why we bombed inside the Cambodian border?
In West Vietnam, US troops would come under attack by Viet Cong guerrillas, and the VC would retreat back across the border into Cambodia. They KNEW that US infantrymen could NOT pursue them across the border, because Cambodia was a "neutral" nation.

The VC had loads of tunnels and paths into Cambodia. These led to massive bases and depots inside Cambodia where the communist guerrillas knew they were "safe" from US counterattack.
Put yourself in the place of our boys.
Getting ambushed on the daily, but you cant do SHIT because they run back over the border.
Sadly, US military had no authorization to conduct operations in Cambodia due to Cambodia's neutrality.
We did what we had to do.
