If one looks at the Middle East opinion polls, conducted by the Brookings Institute, the overwhelming majority think that the region would become more secure with a nuclear Iran. Furthermore, an even greater number are "discouraged" by United States policy in the Middle East, with the prominent reason being US policy regarding Israel. I don't think Americans can overcome their cognitive dissonance though.
Many of the people in Congress are forced into this and it looks as if it is true that Obama is forced by blackmail to participate. It is a terrible crime to blackmail a U.S. President.
