musk turtle like shallow water -- they are "bottom walkers" and dont really swim they like to walk on the bottom of the tank -- they allso like to hide -- they mostly come out at night to hunt for food ----
@BIGGESTxxEMINEMxxFAN false, you are wrong yes musk turtles do like to go at the bottom and you can have shallow water but it is an improper simulation of their natural habitat therefore making it a surrounding for a herp like itself just wanted to let you know that.
But I would also like to apologise because I told you that u were wrong from a steriotypical view, because my turtles prefer deep water but turtles do have personalities so I am sorry I said that.
You do in fact need a dock or ledge for them to rest on. Baby turtles won't be able to tread water forever, when they're adults you can get away with it but it's never recommended to give them no basking area.
Actually. Out of all freshwater turtles Musk turtles are indeed the swimmers and rather stay inside the water at all time and when "basking" like when I caught mines (today) I saw that it was floating among the vegetation rather than going out. Only the baby one I saw was completely out of the water but not too far more like a feet way or less. Point is they need more water but for now is okay. x3 iam keeping mine in a 10 its okay.
I have a baby musk along with a duo of sliders in a 180 liter rio tank . He always finds a way to get to the food even though my other 2 hog most of it
I just got mine today :D Its in a 10 gal tank with a heater.. No filter. I didn't relize it would be the size of a penny! It wasn't eating when I put some baby turtle food in there, so I resorted to regular reptomen, and he still wouldn't eat it... Although I did see some of the newspaper he was packed with was eatin.. I hope he isnt sick, you tell me since you got them from the same place D:?
I currently have 4. Originally, it was 5 but one died not too long after I received them (a little while after this video was made). I was only gonna get two...but lol I got a little greedy. :P I think I may give two away after they get bigger because it seems like keeping 4 grown musk turtles in a 55 gallon tank may not work out.
Yep, I removed a bunch of the rocks because it was getting tedious having to take them out all the time. I leave just enough in to cover the heater. :) The tank is only 10 gallons, I'll move them to a 55 gallon tank soon - it's already set up just waiting!
Their poop will turn into a problem for you. (real soon)
There is a custom fish tank designed just for that problem.
It is a ten gallon. but you can do it to a larger tank.
To view it in operation, enter (babyblue125) into the youtube search bar.
Inside that channel you will see a video on that custom made tank.
-----When the turtle poops, one minute later, it is in the filter----
Its not a pretty tank, its a clean tank.

@LewkOlphert do you even have a musk turtle ?
musk's do tend to prefer shallow water and will walk on the bottom rather than swim ,so how was my comment wrong at all ?
i keep my musk in around 15 inches on water and have a natural setup
i more than likely know 10 times anything you will learn about musks ..
so dont tell me "FALSE or wrong because i was right

The babies tend to hide in the weeds near the edge of the ponds so this is a perfectly fine set up.

They don't need more water! Musk turtles don't really like deep water.

do they need a filter to survive?
videoking1995 3 years ago
no because they dont breath the water but they would maybe need it so your tank will not be dirty
7milewest 3 years ago
I'd get a filter cause any turtle can poop a pleco's weight in feces
prowlus 3 years ago
they may not breathe in te water but an unfiltered tank can lead to more health problems like skin infections or other internal issues
prowlus 3 years ago
no, however you have to do lots of water changes. i change the turtle water about 3 times a week for the turtles in this video.
