It would be nice ,for once , to see one of these NAMM videos and see someone pickup a guitar and maybe play a chord-melody or finger style piece or a even a bluegrass flat-picking piece. But Its always got to be sweeps, taps, and string skipping.

@bowiemott THis had more alt picking and abstract chords than sweeps, taps, or string skipping combined. I get what you're saying, NAMM needs musical diversity, but it's not the techniques used that make that happen, you can have sweeps in bluegrass, and I've seen it done effectively. It's harder to do taps just because they don't resonate as well with that lighter distortion, but harmonic taps can be frequent. Even string skipping can be seen in bluegrass.

@noappend001 So I'm less concerned about the actual techniques than the apparent overall focus on shred and/or high gain playing. Yes sweeps exist in other forms of music - Chet Atkins was doing them back in the 60s/70s long before it was integrated into shred. But back to NAMM. More musical variety is needed and just a general willingness to work with interesting harmony and chords. Chord melody is but one example.

Today, the only way you can be seen as a good guitarist is if you're playing crazy things. It would be nice to just see something where people are playing something without distortion, that's melodic, soothing, and just overall interesting, not just shred. I understand that, and again, agree with it.
