and our recording industry here in finland got through a new tax for hard drives bigger than 1gb which also includes CD, DVD, MiniDisc, HD DVD and Blu-ray. mp3 players and vhs tapes... because those are used for copying copyrighted material...
It's so easy to boil this down to corporations versus individuals. Even as satire, this misses the point. Artists are getting screwed, if Bill C-32 is passed in its current form. The digital lock provisions which are the main hinge of this are a side issue. The real issue are the exceptions to copyright, the loopholes created by the so-called "fair dealing" exceptions, which will strip millions of dollars of income from authors whose works are used in education.
Great video and in a humorers kind of way it shows the full scale of companies WHINING and Bitching year ind and year out about how this new technology will screw you over time and again.
Tell me how intellectual property is a bad thing? Spore was supposed to be the biggest game of the year, it had poor sales, but it was also the most pirated game of that year.
Piracy is the greatest form of archival, the internet is your own massive redundant storage network.
Books used to be chained up in libraries before the advent of the printing press as they were too expensive to reproduce, now we can copy anything without degrading the original and the only thing holding us back is corporate greed.
Im a musician, preparing for an album release next year, and i gotta say, file sharing ESPECIALLY music should be 100% Legal and free. The more people have access to an artists music, the more they're likely to attend a concert, THEIR MAIN FUCKING SOURCE OF REVENUE LOL. This whole thing is nothing but BS and only affects major labels and the suits at the top, not the musicians.
download it and burn it yourself - even if you don't go to the concert you may share it with someone who will, etc etc
(hint remember lots of big established acts actually didn't get much radio play at all and people sharing music was the only source of anything remotely interesting - backin the day (70s) at one stage the no. 1 hit was Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour...)
The whole concept of Intellectual property and copyright is exactly whats wrong with capitalism! The idea of copyright isnt even that old, starting out about 200 years ago as a form of cencership to authors wishing to reproduce the bible. The concept is wrong and creates a false sense of entitlement. Copyright ONLY protects the large corperation and does very very little for the independant artist or small business. This is coming from a Musician who works in the film industry.
Check out the "Vermonster Beer VS Monster Energy drink" for a great example of how copyright SCREWS the little guy. Also look at the band Jett, and how they sued a nobody band for 40,000 bux for name infringement. How bout Micheal Jackson buying all the rights to the beatles songs and leaving Paul screwed out of those royalties. Or even the group fun loving criminals not making a dime off thier debut success album because of a soundbyte infringement. Copyrights suck for the small guy
Right on target. The main argument of major copyright holders is that the ability to copy an artist's production will eventually lead to less production. As this video demonstrates, this is not true and has never been true. What is at stake here is the profit of companies which rely solely on copyright in order to make money. Don't get me wrong: copyright is important in order to protect the rights of individuals and small/medium businesses alike - DCMA-style copyright will never be a necessity.
There's more truth in that one statement than you'd expect. It turns out that the copyright industry also shares files, including copyright material, whenever it wants to.

Music is art
Distribution is business
even if all the businesses in the world fail people will still make music.

Only protects large corps? How so? I think copyright is fantastic protection for independent and individual creators.
