  • chuck bednarik is a really good family friend of ours. He flew in WWII with my grandfather as a waste gunner in the B-24 Liberator "feuden Wagon"

    just a fun fact :)

  • Bednarik, hands down no question.. The single best all time Linebacker!!!

  • Chuck Bednrik was the tougest player to play on the 1960 eagles the LAST championship we had before i was born i hear that team was the best team since the 1948, 1949 champs Go Eagles

  • Not a believer in the modern players are soft theory. Those guys take a beating over a season. Maybe not as tough as Chuck though. :)

  • @shoelace00 dont forget about james harrison

  • 2:14. You're welcome.

  • Leave it to some fat slob like "deepthreat" who's obviously never played a minute of football in his life to call a classy pro like Gifford a wuss. Fyi, fucknozzle, Gifford came back from that injury and made All Pro, And at the age of 81, he could still kick the shit out of a gutless little pussy like you,

  • THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BRUTAL ABOUT THAT HIT - AT ALL. Gifford just FAINTED and then was too ashamed to show his wuss face in the league for a couple of years.

  • great video my dude took me a minute to find the footage of the gifford hit. if you got it please upload some mel blount stuff. thanks in advance sir

  • The NFL should take note of this man! The way he played is the way the game should be played. Screw, protect the QB, hitting defenseless reciever. I wanna see Bone crushing, career ending, Chuck Bednarick hits! seriously its frustrating because these panzies wanna make millions of dolors to not get hit, if you dont wanna get hit dont play the game! I pay I wanna see extremely vicious hits!

  • @jburm0305 and another note, Chuck Bednarick, and IDC what anybody says, is hands down the meanest, toughest, dirtiest, hardest hitting, best linebacker of all time! Hands down is he the best all time!

  • @jburm0305 True seems like nowadays Ndamukong Suh is the only one trying to rip people's heads off.

  • Bednarik got it right when he said NFL today is not real football. He said you call this pussy wussy crap football.

  • @skywalker7327 The sane was said in Bednarik's day when they started to wear facemasks and helmets (not leather helmets)

  • I have a feeling that his mom could kick the asses of at least half of the 49ers 2011 roster.

  • man that hit was f'n WEAK... i'm sorry... maybe frank gifford was just a b!tch... there was NOTHING crucial about that hit @all

  • he murdered gifford, God he killed him

  • I don't even care to watch football anymore. It's all about which team or which player can make the most money. It's too much of a business now, just like most other pro sports.

  • Concrete Chuck was a great center, at 230 lbs? Can you imagine him playing today?

Can you imagine the Frank Gifford of the 50's playing in the NFL today? He'd be lucky to make a junior college team.

  • I remember when Bednarik said this wussy shit today that ain't REAL football.Very sad ,but he's right.

  • @chuckbednarik78 Wow, you can't spell. It's congraTulations. Don't try to get into a battle of wits, you're unarmed.

  • SWEET SWEET DISPLAY!!!ALWAYS LOVE TO SEE MY BIRDS FLATTEN THE PRIMA DONNA FRANK GIFFORD'S CANDY ASS!!!!!!!!HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHEEEOO!!!FLY EAGLES FLY ON THE ROAD TO VICTORY!!!E-A-G-L-E-S!!EAGLES!

  • If I were to say that the hit didnt look that hard, I feel like I would be told I did not understand how it was back then and that it was only 5 cents for milk and uphill in the snow and hard labor, so i'll just be quiet.

  • @FeebleNosemanny You have to understand it better. First, the black-and-white image softens our view of it. Second, the camera view is far away. Third, look how high a hit it was, which was legal back then. Fourth, the size differential was that Chuck was 6'3, 235 while Frank was 6'0, 185. Gifford missed the rest of that season AND the entire following season because of that one hit. In 1962, Gifford returned but as a WR instead of as a RB to lessen the risk of another concussion.

  • @imdobest

Ah, illiterate children playing on the internet. What a shame there isn't a keyboard option to send a pulse back to the original computer and blow it up.

Of course you're a kid. That would explain all the atrocious spelling and grammar mistakes. That or you are an undereducated slob looking for some attention.

    @skywalker

You're just as bad. You apparently know how to spell though. Or at least know how to use a spell checker.

  • @wzrdcc Wow, you can spell, congradulations.

  • My guess is the one person who "disliked" this was Frank Gifford.

  • People that don't know football can't see NFL got soft.Bednarik knows this not real football anymore. Chuck would bitch slap @Imdobest if he heard that punk talk this bullshit.Goodell ruined NFL. Lets hope the next person that has a comment for me is a real Football fan and a smart fan.

  • I have his Autograph....

  • Don't know if I agree on the hatred part.

But if you're a linebacker, you gotta do what ya gotta do.

  • grandfather whent to school and played with him

  • Get well Chuck. I agree with Chuck when he said NFL is soft and Bullshit nowadays

  • @skywalker71903 I disagree with that. Do you play in the modern NFL? I don't but I'm guessing they don't exaggerate it one bit when they say that LOTS of players GO INTO the game hurt and DO need the break when they get put on the injured reserve.

  • @Imdobest No kid, the NFL is getting soft. All those bullshit fines on James Harrison and countless other NFL Defensive players.Goodell is making game soft so they can have 18 game season. They over protect QBs and WRs. They want more offense to sell more.More money. Kid, do some research before you make a dumb comment like that

  • @skywalker71903 you stupid bitch? Do you mean you are a stupid bitch? Someone dropped out of school a little early. Also I never said that Goddell wasn't making the NFL safer that doesn't mean thou that the NFL's soft. I you go in against a WHOLE BUNCH of 200+, 300+ dudes and take a bunch of hits from them all day every week and tell me that the NFL's soft. Just because your not intelligent enough to comprehend what I'm saying doesn't mean I don't know anything about the NFL.

  • @Imdobest Your a weak bitch that does not understand football.YOU PUSSY.NOW SHUT UP KID, you act like I am the only fan that says NFL is soft.Go to James Harrison hit videos and other videos showing defensive players getting fined for bullshit.A lot people over there agree with me there.Besides get off this video you are disgracing Bednarik. If he was here he would punch you, you stupid bitch

  • @skywalker71903 also next time I see a comment I'm just gonna delete it right off the bat because it's a lose, lose situation when neither person is getting anywhere.

  • @skywalker71903 I'm not really a kid and just because people get fined when they make ILLEGAL hits doesn't mean that the NFL's soft. Oh ya and have you looked it up you dumbass how many players come down with injuries? Don't get all confident that your right when you don't have real good proof, ok? Learn something about football and then reply back dipshit.

  • @Imdobest YOU DON'T KNOW FOOTBALL!!! You idiot Goodell is making game soft so he can make 18 game season. Illegal now to use helmet as weapon thats making it soft, YOU STUPID BITCH.QBs are way over protected like Brady and Manning in REAL NFL those 2 would of quit a long time ago.Watch old tapes you Montana and Aikman get hit late,Today if defensive player hits Brady late its a flag and fine.Even Aikman says NFL is soft and watered down, and he says he could still play if it was like this then

  • @Imdobest Shut your damn mouth. YOU DON'T KNOW FOOTBALL!!!

  • Get well Chuck!

  • The angle makes it hard to see just how hard he hit the guy.

  • The last of the 60 Minute Men. Tough guy and a great player.

  • @kzf1

Last of the Ironmen too. Chuck Bednarik played both center and linebacker.

  • There are harder hits in Pop Warner. Gifford is such a pussy.

  • Gifford missed the entire 1961 season because of that hit in 1960....it's considered the greatest hit in NFL history...

  • Hmm. That's my home town. My dad was a Slovak immigrant (legal...lol), and he went straight to Bethlehem due to the relatively big Slovak population.

  • Jeez, that hit on Gifford looks like nothing.

  • @tempofreak69 that hit was like omg. oh wait, he lost the ball. sorry i thought that was his head, nevermind.

  • @tempofreak69 they didn't have hi def in 1960....LOL

  • @tempofreak69 they didn't have hi def in 1960 lol

  • I heard Sam Huff, NFL hall of famer LB talk of this hit today on the radio. They saw a body bag with a body in it after the game in the locker room and thought it was Gifford. It turned out to be a cop who died of a heart attack. Huff was certain it was Gifford. He also said he'd dream every night of having a hit like this.

  • What's really awesome is that during a game Frank Gifford was calling for Monday Night Football, he was being even more clueless than usual and when a hard hit was dished out, Howard Cosell snapped:

"Frank, that reminded me of the hit Chuck Bednarik put on you!"

    OWNED!

  • "this fucking game is over!"

  • It just feels like football outside! I can't wait to smash some cheese heads on Sunday. I need to find a Bednarik Kelly Green Jersey

  • @kiley1119 the Eagles online store sells em! philadelphia eagles dot com

  • This is one guy Unitas always feared along with Butkus. Kids live your life and play the game of football like Chuck.

  • i have the eagles 2010 yearbook & they have about 3 pages of the 1960 championship team

  • Bednarik would run wild today!!! He was a REAL football player...he'd kick ass today!!!

  • i was in this video when he was speaking to our team, northeast middle school..even after that we had many conversations about football and life in general, this MAN stayed true to bethlehem and his family...what an honor it was to be in his presence,,this is one guy who got the respect he deserved..a tough sobb..even in his 70's you would think twice about pissing him off

  • sweet he is my great uncle!

  • The narrators voce almost makes it seem like a spoof.

  • bednarik sucked as a center

  • bednarik sucked as a center

  • Early on in the video, look at CB's right hand as he's walking through his backyard. Note that none of the fingers are straight and that his pinkie sticks out from the hand at a right angle. If you happen to shake Chuck's hand, he'll grimace and pull it away and you think you've hurt him. He's pulled this on me twice and I fell for it both times. A very nice man. Now.

  • i feel like that hit on frank gifford should have been a lot bigger

  • @webergrill1 Why was Frank running to the sidelines anyway?

  • @Gwitfu90 uh... there was a defender right in front of him. The point of football is to gain as many yards as you can when you have the ball. He was running to the sideline because he wanted to gain more yards.

  • @webergrill1 How do you gain yards by running directly to your right? He didn't even go northeast, he just went east.

  • @Gwitfu90 he was a tiny split end he could not run through someone. he wanted to get around the guy its not that difficult to comprehend.

  • @webergrill1 no, he was a halfback. He saw Chuck before he got hit. In football, you're suppose to be tough and run straight forward. He had to see what was in front of him to know he had to run to his right.

  • @Gwitfu90 this is the dumbest string of comments i have ever been involved in on youtube.

  • @webergrill1 KNOW YOUR FACTS!!!!!!!!

  • @Gwitfu90 it was near the end of the game and he was trying to stop the clock.

  • @webergrill1 Gifford landed on the back of his head.

  • Back in the day, the late 40's through the 50's, the Eagles were nasty, no team in the league like playing them. Al Davis must have been a student of Eagles football because the Raiders of the late 60's and 70's were just as tough, nasty and hated. The Eagles were the NFL's original bad boys!!!!!

  • He really was a great defensive player, but as a blocker, Art Donovan wrote in his book in 1987, Fatso, Football When Men Were Really Men, that "as a blocker Bednarik could not block my grandmother".

  • He seems like a cool cat that would tell old War stories (literally) for hours on end!!

Would love to hang out with him for a day!

  • I had a chance to meet Bednarik in 1970 at a picnic in Maryland, when I was a teen. He was very friendly and gave me his autograph. He also demonstrated on me the final play of the '60 NFL championship, where he held onto Jim Taylor and the Packers were unable to get off anoither play. It's lucky I didn't ask him about the hit he put on Gifford!! Bednarik's sure a nice contrast to the multimillion dollar ingraits you run into at times in today's sporting scene.

  • REALLY?? He's my grandpa!!! Maybe were related?!?!?!

  • @LetsGoEagles36 I don't know the woman's first name, I always called her Mrs.Bednarik...she used to work in a Credit Union in Martins Ferry, OH. Asked her if she was related to Charlie, she mentioned she married his brother. Maybe her 1st name was Betty. Anyway, a wonderful woman who I miss seeing.

  • Played the Game the way it was meant to be played, well balanced guy, true class act, a great role model for all athletes.

  • holy shit...frank gifford got absoloutly DEMOLISHED!

  • I wish football players today were like this.

  • 2:24

Frank Gifford...you got knocked the **** OUT!

Not an Eagles fan, but I have nothing but respect for Chuck Bednarik

  • what a fuckin badass

  • 99 speed in madden 09 :]

  • concrete charlie is one tough sob. he's a true american hero, in every sense of the word.

  • at :32 he kinda looks like channing tatum.

maybe not, but i kinda think so...

  • Chuck was one of the greatest Eagles to have played the game. A class act both on and off the field. How many guys go from combat tailgunner to Ivy League student to all pro two way player? Not many today!

  • My favorite football player of all time.

Last of the two way players.

    Thanks for posting!

    5*****

    Chuck was the greatest.

  • ya started typing early my bad there wasnt a lot about football tho

  • chuck goes to my church :)

  • nvm

  • why dnt they have the one where he hits that guy on the gants into next year?

  • Comment removed

  • it was the first tackle they show.

  • 2:28.

  • The Last Of The 60 Minute Men.

  • that is my moms cousin!!!! Chuck bednarik is cousins with Carol Bednarik

  • Growing up outside of Pittsburgh during the 70's, I can't help but be a Steelers fan. That being said, Charlie is far and away my favorite player from over the years. He epitomizes all those post-WW II NFL players that were simply hard asses by virtue of being combat vets and witnessing real death. The modern players may make a much better salary than Charlie did and are more "athletic", but I doubt they could have thrived in the 50's where versitility and raw aggression was paramount.

  • Force equal mass times acceleration which is dangerous.

Do you honestly think that any of those dude would have gotten close to Barry Sanders?

Do you think that any of them could have escaped a young Jevon Kearse defensive lineman (sub 4.5/40yd dash speed). How about Ronnie Lott? Are you trying to tell me he wouldn't have been knocking dicks loose?

Football is a dangerous game. The rules have been modified to protect the players otherwise it would still be played the same.

  • I can tell you are a true football aficionado by your well thought out and valid response to my comment. No, I don't think the players from the 50's on back could compare with our modern athletes any more than I think Johnny Weissmuller could kick Michael Phelps' ass in swimming. My main point was that the game changed from athletes expected to be versatle to now and forever an era of specialization. Barry Sanders didn't also play cornerback. You are totally correct about rules and injuries.

  • Anyone can go out there and 'play dirty'. Back then, they were doing what the rules would let them get away with back then. After watching my favs like M. Webster, Sweetness and Reggie White DIE young I am glad for the rule changes.

The amount of mass and acceleration these guys generate today if they played the same way as in the 50's AT LEAST one player would die or be paralyzed each season most likely.

A career in sports shouldn't contribute to an early death. Peace.

  • no doubt, they were pure badasses. they all looked like they were made out of deformed leather, same as their helmets. those guys were mean

  • Thanks a million for this video, mate!

  • Truly a beast of a man

  • Concrete Charlie was one of a kind!!
