they have a different environment... some designed to look more like windows... some to be less reousre intensive... some for simplicity... there are also some ubuntu distros desiged for a specific task... like video editing or educational...
the bad thing with ubuntu is that doesn´t have like a "msn" to talk to people online... and i mean is not something REALLY necessary but... you know :) and acrually i installed it but i need to talk to my famuly in other countries..XD
Is there a way to get something that you don't have to worry about 100's of Dependencies or very little, I've just started using Linux, about 4 days now and i find my self spending hours looking and downloading/installing all these Dependencies.
if your using ubuntu. You won't have problems with the dependencies. you can install the software using aptitude command or apt-get. ex. sudo aptitude install leafpad
If your using a Debian based ditro [eg Ubuntu, Xandos], type in 'apt-get -f install' - without the quotes, and this will install any missing dependencies.
how can i install something from a read only cd in ubuntu 10.10 i tried changing the exec thing and it says i cant change it

the shell used for the graphical interface, kubuntu used KDE, Xubuntu uses xfce desktop, and Edubuntu is a variation that is designed for classrooms

I think -f is to force any conflicts or overwrite existing files. You may want to clear or check the options first. Anyways thanks for the post =)
