  • I would say this was a good attempt lol. Very nice.

  • Hi Dan, how about some throwing 'off the hump', all your pieces, even the teapot spout seem to be made with small pieces of clay - any insight you can give into repeat throwing off the hump would be great

  • Thats basically the same way you make a vertical chicken cooker - except the center piece needs to be about as tall as a beer can, and a slightly smaller diameter. I've made them with the sides a bit higher (to capture the juices, or roast potatoes) and they work very well. I put handles and sometimes a shallow spout, to direct the juice if you want to pour out to make gravy or something.

  • Just tried this today and it came out better than I expected. Mine is a bit smaller cause I am using it for guacamole and chips

  • I've made quite a few of these, you did very well! They are great sellers too!!! I just have a question... what is the tool you used to trim the outside bottom edge? You made it look so easy, and I couldn't really see the tool. I saw a sharp pointed edge, and that's all. Thank you!

  • If you look on my shelf you may be able to see the tool better.

But basically it's just a piece of stainless steel plate bent at 90 degrees and made into a triangle shape.

Then it's just sharpened on a grinder then more preciseley with a file.

The best multipurpose turning or trimming tool you'll ever need.

    Cheers,Dan

  • I know of one person making a square pot on the wheel. I guess you could try that. and I have no idea what you mean by cone drive, but with my wheel, you can just set the speed you want it and take your foot off. Even some of the older ones at my school are that way

  • You make it look so easy. I now have to give this a try. Thanks

  • WHAT A CLEVER IDEA!

  • Dear Dan I am a young potter from Russia. I just begin to work.

Сould you please show us on video or explain the arrangement of the gear shift mechanism of your potters wheel.

  • @tibery99 Hi,my wheel is a really old one and the speed is changed by literally kicking a pedal into a slot which changes the speed and then locks it at that speed, hence the banging noise.

It's not one of the new cone drive wheels but just an old one,but once the speed's changed I don't have to keep my foot on the pedal which is good because I just can't throw anything on these ultra sensitive cone driven wheels.

  • How about a big spherical bowl, the kind with a lip that just continues the arc of the bowl and a small opening. Know what I mean? And make it big, please. And paper thin. Stretch it as far as you can. I've always wanted to know how to do that. Or a really big platter. Oh--show us how to trim the bottom of a big platter. I guess you don't trim the bottoms, but could you show us how to get the wire under a big platter without its coming up crooked?

  • @notawuss Well,I'll try to make a spherical bowl, but won't that just be a big ball if it has a small opening?? I'm not too bothered about making things paper thin, there's no point, clay's cheap.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • Yes, I should have said spherical pot. I mean a basketball with a small hole in it. I've always liked them. I guess they could be used for pussy willows or tall, stick-like flowers. Thanks. Looking forward to it.

  • I would love to see you make a double walled pot. I have been trying it and always make it too thick in some places and too thick in other spots.

  • That should say *too thin in other spots*

  • @Alyzabeth01 Right then I'll have a go.

I've never made one before but who cares LOL !!

I'll try a small one and pierce it..........hopefully.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • I'm looking forward to seeing that:) You will do fine.

  • keep on keeping on...
