I actually cried the first time I saw this when I was about 3,I was so scared that turtle got hurt and nobody was helping him,my mother actually said "keep watching he's ok" man child hood memories
When i was young, we lived in an old house with a massive staircase in the front, and watching this back in the day made me think of the old house. I like when the kitten (when he's at the next-to-last step) thinks "How many more ARE there!?!?" before he climbs up.
Oh my goodness I love this so much. Though, I remember when I was little, I used to be SO afraid that the turtle wouldn't make it... Joe Raposo was a MASTER. xo

@pokinsmot I just wrote a comment about that turtle,I actually cried when I saw this for the first time(I was like 3) I was scared that turtle got hurt, and no body was there to help him
I have a total about 5 hours of these Sesame Street clips saved in my favorites, and the only thing I can think of everytime I see any of this "modern" Sesame Street is: KILL ELMO!! UGH!...I'd like to take that annoying little red thing and stick him under a lawn mower! Ever since they came out with that @^%$ Elmo, the show has gone nowhere but downhill!! Get rid of about 80% of that computer generated graphic shhhhhhugar, and get back to something half realistic-looking and educational!
@jfpinell ...Wasn't just Elmo, we all have to remember when Barney came out, every kids' show now had to fit in that mold. S.S. sure did, and they never recovered from it!
@ShadesBelow03 Yeah, but Elmo's the one that did the most. In fact, I'm going to make a horror movie about him, and call it: "Nightmare on Elmo Street" :)
I started watching Sesame Street in the early 1980s and remember seeing this. I suppose I remember this in particular because (apart from the beautiful song) kittens were one of my favorite things! We lived in the country but didn't have a barn, so all our "barn cats" lived in the garage! Thanks for the clip!
Man...this is weird....I'm 38, grew up on Sesame Street....the 70s were the best time...just listening to this music arrangemnt, the song, the voice & the message brought tears to my eyes...been so long since I've seen this.
Il y avait un autre vidéo sur le même thème, montrant un chiot essayant de grimper un escalier, et dont les mots de la chanson étaient bilingues: "keep on trying, ne lâche pas, ce sera plus facile quand tu grandiras, Take one easy step at a time, and before you know you'll be doing fine, Keep on trying, ne lâche pas..."
There was another song on the same theme shoing a little puppy climbing stairs while saying "keep on trying, ne lâche pas, ce sera plus facile quand tu grandiras, take one easy step at a time and before you know you'll be doing fine, Keep on trying ne lâche pas..." Does someone have the video?
That kitten is the cousin of the cat who infamously appeared in all those "Hang In There" motivational posters around back then. You know. The one where the cat is holding on to the tree branch to keep from falling? Both kitties are there to remind us to NEVER GIVE UP. Lol!
@jenzeppelin If you would like to have mp3's of stuff like this, google up 'CaptureWiz free downloads'. Trust me, you will be glad if you take my advice and get that software.
The part I remember the most from my childhood was that upside turtle. I remember wondering what those splotches on the bottom of his shell were, and if they hurt. ;) Guess we'll never know!
This song certainly has a great message. That when it comes to achieving success, having talent is just the tip of the iceberg. It takes education, dedication, perseverance, and responsibility to be successful. If you work really hard and believe in yourself, you can be anything you wanna be.
When my sister and I were kids in the early 80s we constantly tried to mimic the kittens on the stairs. Long live Raposo..a Portuguese American legend!
Where did my life go? It went by so fast. It seems like just a year or so ago that I was watching this, eating my PB and J and my chocolate milk after kidnergarten (which was only a half day back then.)
Live as much as you can out of every day. It will be over before you know it.
We need to st art a Retro Kids Channel showing all the old shows we have come known to love and remember. Kids of this generation do not know how SS was back then, now its all the violence. We could show Mr.Rogers,Todays Special and SS. Anyone here wish there was such a channel?
Yeah, I know what you mean. But you know something?? This song makes you realize that it's good that we DIDN'T help them. Otherwise, how else would they learn how to do it?? And how would they be able to feel the pride from knowing they accomplished such tasks??
I would say so, to an extent. Some Raposo tunes had a more 'exciting, fast-paced' nature to them, and others, like this one and the two you mentioned, have a more 'mellow, easy-going' pace. While I'm not a music expert, I think I see what you mean.
Like 'Somebody Come and Play' and 'Flying,' this brings back memories that only someone named Joe Raposo can do. The cat on the stairs, the girl on the water fountain, the turtle on the rock, and the boy catching the football all display a philosophy that applies to ANYONE at ANY AGE! There's no such thing as being 'too old' for Sesame Street!
Wow! I am speechless, astounded and blown away! This is SS at it's best! Bill Cosby once said that Joe Raposo was a gift to Sesame Street and thoses words couldn't be more true!
I'm 37 and I still get emotional watching this too...it's the music as well as the video. When I hear Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle" it chokes me up too...but I love it.
i was told at an early age that turtles could die if they flipped over on their backs so i always felt so bad for the little guy. i always thought "why doesnt someone help him?!" it really upset me...
THere was a classic song in SESAME STREET in which a pretty ice skater was skating to the song "Don't you know you're beautiful". Do you have that song?
Hi, Greg Raposo is actually Joe's second cousin. His mother Maryann is a friend of mine. She is Italian-American and is married to Portuguese-American Octavio Raposo, Greg's father, who is Joe Raposo's first cousin. They never got to meet Joe in person. I know Wikipedia says Greg is Joe's nephew, but Maryann Raposo says second cousin, and I am inclined to believe Maryann :D
Yep, confirmed. Maryann is now my casting director and her daughter Nicole will be in one of our shows, so now it's confirmed: Maryann is married to Joe's first cousin, her son Greg is Joe's second cousin, and her daughters Nicole and Daniella are Joe's second cousins. PS Nicole looks JUST LIKE HIM!
This is a beautiful sentiment, I think. :) And we need more people to say that the effort it takes to try is worthwhile, instead of saying 'well, there's someone better, so it doesn't matter'. Thanks so much for helping me remember this, this clip really gave me courage when I was small!
Most of the songs that Joe Raposo sang himself, were phased out of the show in the mid to late 90's, when Sesame Street unfortunately became The Elmo Show. But because of people like you, Joe's music lives on :-)
Thanks! Unfortunately, this is the only one I can post, because all my other Raposo footage has the Noggin logo on it. Man, I still can't get over the response to this video!
Man, I never thought of the response to this video when I decided to post it! This must be a rare song because I have not seen it since . . . . geesh, how long HAS it been since they last played this? I was so ticked off at Noggin when they used to air the old episodes, and they NEVER played this one! I was just thankful my family's old Beta was still working!
Yes... rare it is. It IS a good thing your Beta worked. Thanks so much for posting this. Reminds us of our childhood... and as a matter-of-fact, when we feel things fail... this video's a great reminder to keep trying, even as adults. :)
Boy I havent seen this since I was a kid, all the memories came back on this song. It brought tears to my eyes. Such great advice to take with you all life long. A simple tune with such a powerful message. It made me feel better from the things in life that are not going well.
I used to think the kitten was trying to climb up the side of a house, rather than a staircase. Maybe it was because the camera had a tight shot on those stairs.
I agree that I first thought the kitten was climbing the side of a house, especially since mine had clapboards that looked like stairs to a 4 year old. Little wonderful songs like this are what Sesame street were all about, try and name one that plays now that inspires such wonder and emotion.
This is an awesome song that applies to kids AND adults. Grown ups can get discouraged at times too but we just have to keep on trying. Thanks Mr. Raposo.
I second that, bluquail! Along with the emotional instrumental intro, and seeing it for the first time when my family got our first kitten (summer 1980),
it meant a great deal to me to see it a few weeks ago. It inspired me to scan through dozens of other SS clips.
Ahhh... That song certainly brings back such memories. I too am a cat lover, and it melted my heart to see that kitten successfully climb those stairs. On the other hand, it's a good feeling to see all young creatures reach such milestones, such as climbing, flipping, or even catching a ball. We need Raposo films back on SS.
As a kid I was all about the turtle. But tonight my heart's going out to the kitten because I've been mothering 4 sweet wonderful kittens that were orphaned by a feral in our backyard. After 2 weeks of high maintenance and fun, I gave them over to a reputable animal rescue group today. The tykes were just that age, or even a bit younger, just learning how to jump and climb! I miss them already, my feisty little monsters.
I'd almost forgotten this one. Then when I started seeing it, I remembered the poor turtle! And then I always felt happiest when the kid finally caught the ball. The kid was so excited when he caught it, it's hard not to feel equally delighted for him. Beautiful sketch.
there is a version of this song on elmo's potty time- i kinda like it better but i cant find it

My sentiments exactly! Joe Raposo was no less than an innovative genius whose life and music left this world a better place than before.

I used to think the kitten was trying to climb up the side of a house, rather than a staircase. Maybe it was because the camera had a tight shot on those stairs.
This is one of my favorite Raposo songs.

Actually, I used to think the same thing!

I agree that I first thought the kitten was climbing the side of a house, especially since mine had clapboards that looked like stairs to a 4 year old. Little wonderful songs like this are what Sesame street were all about, try and name one that plays now that inspires such wonder and emotion.

There's something I've been wondering for awhile. Am I the only one here who got this on tape?

This is an awesome song that applies to kids AND adults. Grown ups can get discouraged at times too but we just have to keep on trying. Thanks Mr. Raposo.

Wow, what happened to this wonderful show. The songs today aren't as catchy or as memorable. Mind you my kid can speak spanish.

Aww a kitten I love kittens

I second that, bluquail! Along with the emotional instrumental intro, and seeing it for the first time when my family got our first kitten (summer 1980),
it meant a great deal to me to see it a few weeks ago. It inspired me to scan through dozens of other SS clips.

"Don't be afraid because you're small.
Don't be afraid that you may fall.
You can make it after all.
It just takes time."

Excellent post. I remember this one from WAY back. But the "late" great Joe Raposo? When did he die?

I think in 1989. I'm not sure.
