I guess we all should have seen the subtext of that episode where Spock's arranged wife T'Pring manipulated Spock and Kirk into a death duel so she could wind up with that Vulcan guy St'aan. Because then we would have known that 45 years later the actor who took over the character from Leonard Nimoy would come out of the closet and inspire this TV guy to do the same.

People seem to be missing the whole point of this situation. There's nothing wrong with the fact that he's homosexual, but there is something very wrong about a public person revealing details of his/her sexual preferences on live TV, as if it was a trivial subject. He's there to host a TV show, not to gossip about his sexual life. People should not encourage this kind of behavior by supporting his attitude, it was a bad example to all professionals of communication.

Many young gay people would love to have a role model, to know that there are other gay people in their life that they might not know about, and to know they're not alone. I think it's fine, given the current social climate, for people to come out in this way.
