  • I'll be there for the Navy by November, can't wait.

  • @KingSaint I am trying to join the navy to be a CTI, what did you score on the asvab?

  • @firebirdnewt I scored a 96, but the hard part is the DLAB, I barely passed.

  • DLI is a school for the mentally imbalanced, or so I hear.

  • @Erich745

if we're not mentally imbalanced coming in, they fix that real quick.

  • omfg 1:47.

    i would destroyyyyyy.

  • @iAREanthonyyy Oh hell yes!

  • The food on Language Day isn't bad, especially the Middle-Eastern variety. However, when I was a student I was very disappointed by the fact that more of a "Language Day," it was a "Celebration of World Culture's Day/Try to Recruit High School Kids Day". For instance, there were never any brave showings of the DLI's finest linguistic talent through speech contests, or anything else like that. Just memorized songs and some provocative dancing (courtesy of the Arabic House).

  • 1 second ago If the DLI would actually invite students from the foreign language departments of colleges and host speech contests, etc., that might actually aid in creating a name for the institute, bolstering the prestige of its students, as well as in recruiting some of those guests/contestants who are of a language persuasion into the enlisted or officer ranks of the military. Just a thought, though. :-)

Ancient Egyptian is the heritage of the Christian Copts who use it in their Liturgy.

With the Moslem conquest, they were displaced by Arabic speaking fellahin.

Besides, hierogyphs are not alphabetic (although they have phonetic components like some Chinese characters) but are ideographs.

  • In order to become truly fluent in a language, you are required to learn the culture of its originating nation and history as well.

  • Uhhhh...

Why is anyone studying Hieroglyphic Ancient Egyptian? (as shown in the video)

Is this in case we go to war with mummies?

  • Do you think there is no reason to have intelligence analysts capable of interpreting Egyptian, past and present?

You'd be surprised what we get into...

  • They don't study hieroglyphics. The ancient Egyptian alphabet is on display as part of the culture (and papyrus is a popular Egyptian souvenir), not as a language that the students are actually studying. Egyptians are very proud of their history, and the hieroglyphics are part of that.
