  • That's a real 'SATCH' sound you got their mate !!

  • So if one is playing in a G mixolydian, then is just playing a C major in the root of G?

  • @TokyoKid47 Yes, that would be correct.

  • Can you play with that scale just when you know in what key the backing track is? Nice playing.

  • Hey man, nice playing...my fav mode is the Mixolydian as well. Have you ever tried playing the minor7 b5 arpeggio from the 3rd of a dominant chord?? This is one of my favorite mixolydian tricks. This would be playing F#m7b5 over a D7 vamp. It really targets out all the funky Mixo notes.

You got any cool mixolydian or Phrygian Dominant tricks???

    Thanks!

  • @weis212 Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try it sometime!..One of the things I like to do is use open string pull offs, going up and down the fretboard and not really in any order, just staying in key. I kinda stole that from Satch!

  • very nice. Can you mix modes up together?

  • Love your playing, I love to hear you in a more mellow blues tone sometime.

  • @daytonohiofellowship Thanks.. Maybe I will post something like that soon!

  • @TheOriginalGuitarMan Thanks, the blues is a real big in the area where I am from, and the young guys kill it with to much dirt, and to many notes in there riffs. I heard you play a blues Shuff. and it sounded good but I think you did not have near the sound that you do here in this setup. I bet by the way you favor your root notes you have some killer sustain, and you know the Mix mode to give that blues scale some added tones in the #1 chord, would love to see that :)

  • Perhaps you could help me out, I'm currently taking jazz lessons from a certain music academic, and all he focuses on teaching me are arpeggios, changes and chromatics, and he says that modes are just there to make the textbook thicker. why's that?

  • @ImperialArmour Not sure way he would say that. The only thing I could think of is that if you know the scales, you basically know the modes. It's just knowing what scale fits what mode. For example, if you know the C major scale, then you know the G mixolydian scale, because they are the same notes, however, the C major scale has a root note of C, and the G mixolydian mode has a root of G...Same notes, different root note to resolve to.

  • So maybe you can explain something for me. Why is this called a mixolydian jam and not just the key of C? Is there no real difference other than having another name to throw out?

  • i know how to construct a mode, but i still don't get how to apply this knowledge. when do you use it in a song?

  • @UnchainTheNight1 You would use the mode over a progression. Like this tune is in G Mixolydian which is the 5th mode of C Major. G Mixolydian and C Major have the same notes but C Major or Ionian you would play from note C to C and G Mixolydian you would play the scale from G to G. A modal progression like this one is based around a G7 chord which is the 5th chord of C Major so you play G Mixolydian.

  • Nice tone. Good jam of course too :P

  • Oh my goodness! You are on funkin' fire!

  • js 2000?

  • @bmr21021975 No..JS 1200

  • Nice stuff man! check my vids, even tho.. they're more about techno and stuff hah

  • @RaialMusic Thanks..I'll check your stuff out..

  • @TheOriginalGuitarMan hey man is it possoble to play mixolodian mode on a blues song? i get bored with pentatonic

  • @bluesclaudio056 Most Definitely.. I do it all the time, flipping from the blues scale to mixolydian. It flows smoothly. If you get a chance, listen to Joe Satriani's Hill Groove from Strange Beautiful Music CD. That's mostly all mixolydian with a bit of a blues vibe. Good Luck!

  • @TheOriginalGuitarMan thank you :-)i'll check that out

  • we all do.

  • @aybns I wonder who is "who"..the geek wannabe guitar hero ? Nothing is really sacred nowadays.....

  • i dont like this

  • JS1200, that explains a lot.

Mixolydian is one of his (Joe's) main scales.

  • key of c major

  • sounds much like the notes joe satriani uses

  • He can't use Joe's notes! Joe should sue him. Call Sam Bernstein.

  • Lydian and mixolydian are my fav modes. (At least picking from the modes i know)

  • thanks for the jam...until now I couldn't "HEAR" how/when I could could use this scale. An AH HA moment. Now if I could just get the same enlightenment for diminished patterns to get a more outside sound. Any tips/jams for diminished half/ whole step applications. Thanks again.

  • @3117ss Use the diminished half-whole scale on diminished chords, so if you are in a C major scale and the rhythm hits a Bº chord, while that rings out, play some stuff. I'm working on that exact thing, it's hard to know when exactly to use it because sometimes even that doesn't work.

  • @PhreePhizz ....check out Jimmy Herring's stuff on youtube...i.e. half step whole step riffs... I think the diminished riffs can work briefly when you go the the FOUR chord....the jam in G Mix is a little like Mike Bloomfield in "East West"....

bloomers is more interesting immho....thanks for your reply.

  • When listening to this you get a real feel of how Mixolydian Joe Satriani's Summer Song is...

  • pretty nice man, are there any particular mixolydian chord embellishements other than a dominant 7th that are effective?

  • Where can i get the backing track?

    Great job :)

  • Thats a nice improvisation man! congrats, where did u get the Backing track? its really cool!

  • Thanks for the compliment. The backing track is my own. It's from my "Talk To The Hand" CD and the song is called "All Mixolydianed Up". You can hear the full version on my "My Space" page. Go to My Space and search for "FenderStratFanatic"

  • this is my favorite of your jams....great phrasing

Ive been playing for about a year and a half, and im learning tons and tons all the time...but after all the scales, modes, and other theory i learn and practice, my phrasing isnt very good. More often than not it sounds just like a scale lol.....

    any tips on phrasing?

  • Thanks for the compliment. As far as phrasing, I am always thinking of a mood or vibe that I am trying to get across when playing and I believe that's my feelings coming out through the guitar. I would say take it slow and analyze the chord progression of whatever you are playing against. It's sort of like making sentences out of random words...you make melodies out of random notes in a given scale or mode.

  • you got a Joe guitar!!!

  • good stuff!

  • Nice jams dude, keep rockin, post more vids!

  • Great solo man :)

  • dude i wish this video lasted longer. it rocks!!!! so, can anyone tell me good uses of this scale, and lydian too? and some people say its good for satch stuff, or whatever, but, could anyone go in depth of its sounds and uses for me?

  • Lydian has a very big, epic sound to it.

It fits into major well (due to major 3rd) and also minor, if you do it right.

    basically, it sounds different.

So muck around with it and see what you can do eh :]

  • GABCDEFG I LOVE MYX!!

  • What guitar is this? JS100?

  • No, it's the JS1200

  • mixo is a major scale with a minor seventh right??

  • That's correct!

  • @ozzy9691 Yes, exactly

  • same 6 notes over and over, yet it can sound so nice. the power of chord progressions + Octaves + modes.

  • sounds like the scales satriani uses

  • Yeah he uses this one a lot. See Summer Song. He also uses lydian mode a lot.

  • nah mixolydian is more a jeff beck thing. Satch, Vai, and Zappa are big users of lydian

  • @RNRDOLL Satch uses it a lot too.

  • Nice Pickin man. I dig mixo too.

  • hmm. joe satriani signature.....hmmm....jam in g mixolydian....sound like any famous song to u? lol. this is awesome. satch 4evr

  • MAN! Please don't tell me you do this for fun? You must be a pro jazz guitarist right? I mean..what you do for living? Again..Wow!

  • lol loool

  • well done!

  • and even just the way you hold your head to look at it all forces a whole new dynamic on you.

Though I gotta say, running a sweet lick (like the opening to "The Spirit of Radio" is sooo much cooler standing up. makes you feel empowered)

  • niice niice. my only "thing" is that you might do all your jamming standing up, not for looks, but for technique.

Ever practiced everything sitting? then stood up to play w/ the band or at a gig or something and realized that its almost a whole new all game? Yeah...been there, done that. But as far as the musical jam goes dude...niicely done.

  • LOL. yeah I feel your pain man. b/c standing you have much less surface area on the arm/palm with which to mute, and unless you want to look like a total dweeb and raise the strap way up, a normal strap length forces the angle of your arm and wrist to change quite a bit.

  • I'd rather look like a dweeb than sound like asscrack.

  • me too

  • I'm glad music doesn't care what we look like as long as we can deliver.

    You most definately rock.

Az has spoken , code Gilead.

  • looks bad sounds good

  • I love this jam. would u be able to send me the scales u were using?

  • It's G Mixolydian mode which is G A B C D E F. Which is essentially the C major scale played with G as the root.

  • yep, u could also think of a major scale with a minor seventh.

it sounds cool.and u can use it over dominant 7 chords.many other ways but that's a good one

  • he kinda looks like ray ramondo or what evr the heck his name is from everybody loves raymond

  • good.

  • Wow you have an identical tone to the great satch...sounds great, nice playing its very tasteful

  • Thank you!

  • GREAT!!!

  • hi ! i really like your style , im into de mixolydian also lol is rocks (john petrucci influence ) .. and where did you get that nice backing track ? i hope you get to answer thx in advance

  • Thanks. The backing track is from my new CD entitled "Talk To The Hand." You can go to my "My Space" page and hear the complete song. Go to myspace and search for "FenderStratFanatic". One word.

  • can u please post a video showing the myxolydian scale in different patterns......oh and by the way im one of ur fans :P

  • Thanks for being one of my fans. I will in the future, post a video on the mixolydian mode patterns.

  • I am a fan too. I would LOVE to see this. I am just starting to get into scales and I am having some hard time right now because every scale I end up playing sounds almost the same for some reason maybe a little variation.

  • Every scale is almost the same actually, just base it off of the ionian but either sharp or flat one of the notes and you have yourself a mode.

  • what on earth does that mean.... "sharp or flat one of the notes and you have yourself a mode." please help.

  • If you raise or lower one or more notes of the major scale by a semitone then you have created a different scale. E.G. If your playing the A major scale and you sharpen the 4th note (d-d#) you will now be playing A lydian, Which is a mode. If you didnt understand any of that then I suggest you find your self a good music teacher. :)

  • thanks for the help.... an di dont think ill be hiring some teacher... WAY too much money for something you can learn on your won if you look hard enough.

  • You can try practice the mixolydian in G over a simple jamtrack in G7. ( I use a Synthesizer for practicing )

    Remember root position is G.

So your first position pattern starts on the 6th string 3rd fret.

Get the charts for all 5 positions, so you can move around.

Later on you can also switch back and forth between G mixolydian and G pentatonic major, which gives a little more jazzy grove.

  • I agree with iqsymphic, the myxolidian scale is based on the Ionian scale cause both are major scales and sound very similar. I would say it's actually a derivation from the major scale (Ionian). Try to memorize the melody of each mode to be able to recognize them bye ear. greetings from Tijuana Mexico

  • pretty neat background drums u got goin

  • well played....Very nice Ibanez....I have the S prestige

    good guitars

    kepps playing

  • totally sounds like satch; 'specially with that nice ass ibanez too!

    haha; fucking sweet dude!

I'm just learning scales because I have no idea what i"m doing when I solo; so watching this kind of stuff is good for me haha

  • can u explain me how to use the mixolydian in a C scale?

  • The Mixolydian scale consists of a major scale with a flattened 7th. So the C major scale consists of the following notes: C D E F G A B.

    The Mixolydian mode would be, C D E F G A B-flat.

  • Good job.......I would only recommend you to play "less horizontally", and mix the mixolydian scale with some arpeggios, mainly dominant seventh ones. Try it, and I am pretty sure you´ll get excellent results !! Besides that, great job, keep up with your great music !!!

  • Thanks for the recommendation!

  • hi love your music are you hungarian? i am but never lived there. my great grand parents camefrom there im from northern michigan in the us

  • Thanks. No, I am not Hungarian and I am from Pennsylvania.

  • Sounds like Gambale without the blazing shred. Where'd you get the backing track?

  • Gamble..Wow thanks. I don't think I am that good. The backing track is me playing a drum machine and bass looped in my recording software (Logic). If you'd like to hear the full recorded version which will be on my upcoming CD, go to My Space and search for fender strat fanatic which will take you to my page and you will find the song there.

  • doesn't really sound like a gypsy scale, because i have a different one, but it is still really freaking good no matter what key it's in.

  • That's because it is not the "gypsy scale". It is G Mixolydian. The gypsy scale is phrygian dominant.

  • great man! i like this

  • btw, you rarely sound like you're ascending or descending the scale. you really speak through that guitar man. how long you been playing. can you offer me any tips on leads? or how to most efficiently get out whats in my head.

  • wow i really like this a lot. very unique. you seem to have developed your own style. dont know too much about theory either but i do love the sound of gypsy scales. i got an acoustic jam titled gypsy jam you might like. by the way that looks like a joe satriani signature guitar? is it? looks really nice.

  • Thanks for the compliment. Yes, that is a Satriani signature JS1200. I am a big Fender fan but I must admit the JS1200 is much more comfortable on the hands than my Strats are.

  • yeah, it looks very comfy. man i fucking DIG THIS JAM SO MUCH man. you are so good man. really this is totally unique. the way you skip so many notes in the scale makes me forget you're even using them. keep it up man. I love that riff at 40 seconds. AMAZING.

  • Soul.. I have been playing guitar for 40 years. As far as tips on leads. Learn all you scales and all your modes. Learn them so you can play all in all keys with eyes closed. Another tip would be to practice each scale on each (6) single string. I got that tip from the master himself, Joe Satriani. That way as you mentioned, it does not come across as just ascending or descending a scale. Good luck and have fun playing.

  • 40 years. wow. can't wait till i can express as well as you. by the way what scale is this that you are using exactly? and also, what are modes and where on the internet can i find some good info that you approve of on them.
