I have 2004 mazda6 with 3.0L duratec engine. There's a whinning screaming noise comming from the serpentine belt area. I just replaced my tensioner and belts 2 yrs ago. I began noticing the noise during winter cold starts but the noise will slowly fade an go away after 5-10 mins when the engine gets warm. On summer months, it never makes this noise. What should I replace first? I used gator back serpentine belt not the original dayco brand.
@A10ZA You should inspect the belt to see if it's cracked, and then replace it if it is. You may also want to check the belt tensioner to see if it's in it's normal range.
@baldchicken11 Yes. You would need to lift the belt tensioner up and off of the belt to remove the tension, and then put your new belt on. Here's a video that will show you how to do this. Hope this helps you out. youtube.com/watch?v=MOjHRxUfCpU&feature=plcp&context=C3981e52UDOEgsToPDskK3k50RZZ_mGsyKoDoSiA-E
I had a new belt and idler pulley put on about 2 years ago, now I'm getting some squealing again. It only happens at low speeds, and if I turn off my blower, heater, radio and lights it goes away. I'm pretty sure it's the alternator starting to seize, what do you think?
@frankvonfrauner If you stand outside of the car with the hood up and have someone start it for you, it may be easier to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Hope this helps you out.
got idler pulley other day and went to replace it, question is new one came with looks like a metal spacer the goes inside the pulley and the bolt goes threw that. i didnt use it just put it on the way ford one was on and shown in the video but it seems to be making alot of noise. should i use it please Help thanks
@3994257 A belt will squeal if the belt is worn or the tensioner has lost some of it's tension. If the tensionor pulley is bad, they'll wobble, freeze or sometimes even self destruct.
Is the idler pulley suppose to spin like the other pulleys or is it suppose to be tightened solid? I had to replace the idler pulley on a 97' Chrystler Sebring Convertible and the belt keeps coming undone, whats the problem? Help me out please?
@Davide131 The idler pulley is suppost to spin like the other pulleys. You may want to check the pulley to make sure it's tracking right and not wobbling back and forth causing the belt to come off.
@FaithfulYoungServant It's always a good idea to disconnect the battery when working in the engine bay. It will prevent anything from shorting out, and from the motor accidentally starting on you.
THANK YOU for this post. There are millions of pages telling how to do it and showing diagrams but ....they are all different. Watching it on the video def was a huge help and let us know my husband can do this!!! We found out our car, 2003 Taurus ALWAYS must change the idler pulley whenever the belt is replaced or the noise is back within a day or two. Some strange reason Im sure :)
@netguyaz Check for your belt routing diagram around the radiator support or underside of the hood. Sometimes it labels the location of the tensioner.
Im having this same problem on my 99 ford taurus wagon. Ive changed the pulley and belt and the nose went away for a few days but is now back in force. Any ideas?
@blankminded1982 Possibly bad tensioner, if it can't apply enough tension to apply enough friction to all the pulleys they will squeak and squeal. There is a pulley on it as well that can squeal too! Let us know what the issue was!
I'm loving your videos guys, just had a quick question about how you know this is the idler pulley and not just a worn belt? I wish in some of your videos you could tell us how to figure out what the problem is. I know time is an issue so I understand if that is just not feasible.
@Dolfandad79 Thanks for the love. It is very difficult to describe all the problems that can cause a screeching noise. A belt screech is more uniform in volume and pitch. In this vid the sound is erratic, it rises and falls in pitch and volume so that indicates the pulley bearing is bad.

If I'm only replacing the belt, do I just take the old belt out by loosening the tensioner, then re-applying a belt?

I just finished installing a new idler pulley on my
1997 Ford Taurus. All went very well with the 15 mm
wench on the tensioner pulley but the idler pulley
required an 18 mm wench. Great video and thanks
for the great information.
