David, I paddled to catch the wave as it came up behind me. Once I was on the downward side (the side toward shore) no paddling was necessary. The wave pushed me along. It was just a matter of using my paddle as a stern rudder, switching from one side to the other while leaning and edging somewhat.

Ken, how did you stay in front on the wave for so long? It didn't sound like you were paddling to keep up with it.
