Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they just doing a circle-turn as they walk towards their intended destination as the dolly circles around the track, or am I missing the point of the question? lol

This was not a steady cam but a dolly on a circle track around the actors. Michael Ballhaus, who was Fassbinders cameraman, explained the scene in an interview. Karlhein Böhm had to step over the levelled tracks, thats way he lifts his feet so high, when he walks towards the taxi.

The American DVD of "Martha", like most Fassbinder films on DVD, has a very shitty transfer. :(

Dieses kineastische Praliné wird gemeinhin doch etwas überschätzt. Es war ein guter Einfall des brillianten Kameramanns, ähnlich wie bei Hitchcocks "Psycho" die Szene des Mädchenmords unter der Dusche. - Gleichwohl wirkt die Szene heute sehr gewollt und aufdringlich.
