I only started watching The Wire recently and I gotta say, Stringer Bell was one of my favorite characters. He started out as the kind of evil scumbag you'd hate, but as he grew out of the game and became more legit, I couldn't help but root for him. His death was inevitable (due to many mistakes he made) but it's still sad that he couldn't acheive his dream of becoming fully legit.

This interview was from like 4 or 5 years ago so he was more in character. the Stringer Bell character has a distinct accent so he was just finishing his final year of shooting so obviously his American accent had to be perfect but in reality his accent is still there and strong especially when he goes back home. It's like my parents when they go back home to the Caribbean there accents are more pronounced.

To ESTLDN988, you can't say this is a Cockney accent. Not everybody who was born in Hackney has a Cockney accent. My mum was born in Richmond Road, and she definitely did not have a cockney accent. Idris's accent sounds like a London Black to me, and many Black Londoners don't have strong Cockney accents. They quite often have Carribean accents - a bit like Ali G. Or they have "street-cred" accents. I would call Idris's accent Street-Cred English.

It's probably easier for British actors to do American accents well than it is for Americans to do English, Irish, Scottish and so on, for the simple reason that we all grow up watching American films and TV, but there is much less British film and TV shown in the US.

well, a lot of americans CAN do a pretty decent english accent, but for the most part theyre limited to that upper crust "hugh grant" sort of accent. they usually fall limp when it comes to the regional dialect. i mean, i saw josh hartnett in some film (i forgot the name of it) where he tried to portray a yorkshireman. he sounded like a yorkshireman trying to do an american accent!
