that 6V71 or whatever it´s called sure likes to rev. And then listen to the enormous gap between 1st and 2nd. You wonder how they got out of their own way but they did. I used to ride the TTC fishbowl and haven ridden on a more comfortable bus since.
Man, that sound brings back some memories. Someone was complaining about "that Powerglide." Trust me, the VH9 was a BIG improvement over the original with the throttle interrupt! These are really "Dynaflows"...a four-element torque converter for low range, and clutch to direct drive for high. This one has its shift point set about right. RTD in So Cal used to always set the shift points WAY down on these and the 6-71s to conserve fuel and provide engine braking at lower speed.
i remember a story a bus driver told me is that when the bus system where i live first got the new same bus fleet of the new flyer d40 low floor buses with the eagle engine those were so bad they had to recall the engine cause the driver said she threw a rod with it. sad that they dont run the old new looks anymore. wish i had one
When I went to Toronto a few years ago I had the pleasure of riding one of these. Brought back many memories. Here in Chicago these were replaced by Flexibles and those ugly god awful TMC's!
@suidrac I agree, but I love TMCs and I wish that Chicago would've order the normal style RTS 06s like NYC/ Detroit. But you are right, those Chicago TMCs gotten even terrible after their 2001 rehabs.
Brings back memories of my childhood in San francisco . Muni had about 300 of these buses brought between 1968 and '70 . Some of them in the 3200 to 3300 numbered series wich were brought during 1969 & '70 were restored for further service in 1984 & '85 and renumbered 3501 to 3650 . They ran until 1995 when they were retired . Muni also had about 40 Grumman Fishbowls numbered 4001-4039 that they got in 1971 and lasted until 1975 when the lease ran out .
To answer the questions about the speed of this bus, When I drove the bus one time from Calgary to Airdrie, I clocked it at top speed on flat ground as 84km/hr on my GPS. Speedometer would read 80km/hr. I could have got it to top out at 120km/hr if I put in the better rear end axle ratio and bigger injectors on the engine. When I delivered the bus to Edmonton Transit, it was not a fun drive up highway 2 doing only about 80km/hr. People were passing us like we were standing still.
On a two speeder? I'm not sure about ETS, but in Montreal they had rev-limiters to 90km/h installed to prevent strain on the transmission. (And lead foots).
I remember on one of these buses about 1996 or so, some guy attacked the driver cos he was missing 50c of his fare! passengers had to break them apart, man, and i was seated just about where this guy is at too
Yep, they were still aorund and as I said in part one, here in L.A.,Calif. a lot of poeple still keep 'e. Why, my dear, you can even buy a two speed tranny for a modern day bus..! (those actually go backeven farther than 1959, regaridng the comment on the last part..around 1947 or eearlier. Some were just one speed abck then,too..:)Just ike a car.
I think the Chicago Transit authority had these buses

No not 110km/h, the bus has a governor on it and is not capable of such a speed. It has a top speed of just under 90km/h as previously stated.

What speed did this bus get up to?
