ok so this may sound funny but one morning as i woke up i had took a look out my window on the 4th floor of my dorm to see two squirrels. as i watched them i can immediately tell that 1 was boy 1 girl and the girl was forever chasing the boy with eyes of love. the boy squirrel did not want the girl following him so he ignored her and eventually she got sad and ran 4 trees down to her home tree.so hitting the recall button in my brain i remember as a child watching this movie n seeing this before
YES, the ending is sad but be reasonable ppl. Arthur's a little boy learning about the world. he barely understands what gravity, is, how would he be able to understand what love is? he clearly hasn't developed those feelings yet and would never work out between him and the girl squirrel. it's a heartbreaking scene to reinforce the fact that the scene is exactly how life is; you fall head over heels for someone until they reveal their true colors, end up being someone different, and you grieve.
I feel the same Mirah2437. I always thought that, as a squirrel, her and wart were cute together. I feel so sad whenever I see her reaction. Also yes that fat squirrel is hilarious especially when she shoves merlin
I could never stand to watch the end of this scene. I couldn't bear to see that poor lil' squirrel heartbroken like that.
The FAT squirrel, on the other hand, I was glad to see her reaction. 3:01-3:28 was just too great. Seeing Merlin's human form emerge from the leaves like that was just awesome, and the squirrel screaming was a riot!
The time period from 1:25, to 1:35, is ABSOLUTELY hilarious and priceless. She shoves him into the tree, HARD, and then it's like she knows she's done something wrong, because she laughs, into her tail, but she doesn't care, either! This is my favorite Disney movie.
That squirrel is seriously the perfect girlfriend - she's cute, playful, sweet, insanely affectionate/horny, loves Arthur for who he is and isn't afraid to show it, and will risk her life to save his at the drop of a hat. Good luck finding a human girl like that, Arthur.
I always feel sad that cute little girl squirrel...heartbreaking :( For the love of God, this is the unhappiest part of the movie - plus Merlin should've turned her into a human - this means Arthur could get a girlfriend, settle down with her and to live happily ever after 'til the end of their days. Anyone who saves my life earns my absolute and unending loyalty and trust. I definitely wouldn't have been able to abandon her after she saved my tail and risked her own to do so...

@CameraMari Next to the most unfortunate wolf, she's my favorite in this movie... When I was a kid, I messed up our VHS tape of this, rewinding it over and over and over to watch the part where she's mad. Now I get to rewind my DVD over and over and over with no worries about wearing it out. xD

Your right. The only people I think that still do traditional are the artists at studio ghibli in japan. They made wonderful films like: Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, Castle In The Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro. Also we have had other great anime films in the past like Akira and Ghost in the shell. I admire the artistic quality of anime and how much effort it is put into.

I actually felt really sorry for the poor squirrel. Sure she was a bit of a stalker with a crush but still it was very sad to see her alone and heartbroken. I can still remember the times I cried watching that scene especially when I watched the film in primary school. A most befuddling thing is it Merlin? It seems pretty standard to me- girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy keeps secrets from girl until they cuddle under a tree and then he turns into a completely different person, leaving girl high and dry and heartbroken whilst claiming that it was her own fault for not realising his true nature. I think there is a short part of reused sketch when the wolf try first to bite after the girl squirrel is from Lady and the tramp when tramp is fighting the rat.
The best of it all is that I've always imagined the human equivalents to these squirrels...

It's amazing how Disney puts a really funny scene right after this sad one. Makes you forget this sad scene completely...at least, it did for me.

wonderful work, making us care for what is literally a 2d drawing on a piece of paper, animated to give the illusion of movement.
its art, took a long time for film to be taken seriously as an art form .

I feel sorry for that young girl squirrel, this was the saddest part of the whole film.

A most befuddling thing is it Merlin? It seems pretty standard to me- girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy keeps secrets from girl until they cuddle under a tree and then he turns into a completely different person, leaving girl high and dry and heartbroken whilst claiming that it was her own fault for not realising his true nature. Tsk, I feel for you squirrel sister.
