  • OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • amazing!

  • Dave..Can play the vapors..Thats the time in between the beats and still stay in the groove. Flowing and consistant.

  • Phil Rudd owns this guy

  • @GoGoNards XD That's the most unthinkable comment I've ever seen !

  • Comment removed

  • wooooooooow

  • Does Weckl understand that you don't have to hit something every millisecond to play an expressive solo? Bloody hell... music is all about the space in between the notes you hit just as much as the notes themselves. This guy hardly respects his instrument.

  • @TheMrMysteriouso I understand the criticism, but Weckl is playing in an ultra-technical context here. Though I do agree that sometimes he overplays..and those are the times when Vinnie Colaiuta gets the gig instead! ;)

  • @TheMrMysteriouso

    It's a solo. -.-

  • @TheMrMysteriouso Don't like Weckl's style? He leaves plenty of space, just not in a tempo you are familiar with ;)

  • its look like im playing videogame hahah

  • Weckl is on the rare drummer that plays Rhythm AND notes

  • @TheRomichou ... have you ever heard of Jazz drumming?

  • your amazing Dave

  • Who, you say? Dennis Chambers.

  • Précision, clarté, idées, maitrise, groove, la technique au service de la musique! J'adooooooooooore!

  • kinda reminds me of Bomberman

  • An amazing performance by Dave Weckl. Too bad that slob Corea had to ruin with his bad playing

  • @mikeanelson You're an idiot

  • @mikeanelson slob corea? LOL. you obviously don't know one thing about chick corea, so why bash him when you have no idea? YOU are the slob...slob

  • @mikeanelson, and what so bad about chick corea's playing, genious?

  • Lots of Great Drummers. Dave WEckl is one of them. Vinnie Colaiuata another, let's not count out Steve Gadd unique drumming, Omar Hakim another, Gregg bisonnette another, Horacio del negro another, so many of them...now that we have the internet..so many unknown drummers are out there which are amazing. Hurray for Drummers.

  • After looking at this clip, I think DW could have mastered any instrument!

  • After Dave, every other drummer sounds simple and straightforward. :)

  • the crowd dosent realize what they just saw!!

  • I aggree Dave is technically brilliant and he is awesome under good lead like Chick Corea, Michel Camilo etc. But his own stuff and most of the solos don't have a nice feel. Too much. Sometimes less is more. In this matter I like Denis Chambers more. His is technically brilliant, but is still very groovy with only a few "hits per minute".

  • 8 peoples are blind and deaf

  • I've played drums all my life &right now .... Weckle is the best all around drummer in my option. Check out any of his CDs.

  • Well, after have seen this solo, I' ve got just 3 words in mind: HOLY DAMNFUCKING SHIT

  • Dave is definately one of the greatest drummers of our time. But if I had to pick one guy, it would most certainly be Vinnie Colaiuta. Dave like the other greats seems to get better with age. Were fortunate to have guys like him, Vinnie, Steve Smith, Gadd, Phillips, Husband, Chambers, and other heavyweightswith which to draw inspiration from. Of course old schoolers like Buddy,Louie, Tony Williams, and others draw just as much inspiration. Its great to be a drummer!

  • the big leagues...

competition for that, just Michael Camilo Horacio hernandez and Anthony Jackson or Charisma: Vinie Colaiuta , Landau, Stubenhaus... the others need more practice...

  • I grew up playing with Dave. I got some great board tapes of Dave playing crap like "Doin da Butt" "walkin the dinoaur and my personal favorite "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" auction to the highest bidder lol. Nah he'd kill me

  • Dave Weckl is, arguably, the best drummer in the world right now!

  • @RandomDrumming ...of all time

  • He´s living drumming machine-in good way...without mistakes etc..

  • 1:57 to 2:07 are the most amazing singles I have ever heard.

    Ability, Pure Passion, and Intelligence

  • Daaaaammnn. Skill on top of skill on top of more skill. As a drummer how can you not love his playing?

  • yes boy

  • svetty00, try tribal tech.

  • This guy is about the most Perfect drummer ever. yeah, Buddy was made to play drums too, ( for his day; his genre ) but good god. don't believe anyone really touches this fuckin' dude's pure ability. Who? pound-for-pound, who play's This smooth, flowing, and consistently Devastatingly Impressive? Dave Weckl is hands down, the most Jaw-Dropping, musically Gifted Drummer of our time.

  • @drumdude46 Amen to that!

  • very Good, they have drummers like this in Pentecostal and Apostolic churches in England and America, that is where natural musicians are Born

  • CTA!!!

  • NO WORDS.

  • Dave Weckl is a monster!!!

but am i seeing crazy things or did he miss the snare at 2:08 ??

  • I wonder what it's like to be able to play like that.

  • There aren't in my opinion but a hand full of drummers on the planet who can touch Dave Weckl

  • I know why he's hiring weckl, it takes too goddamn long to adjust the drumcomputer.

  • impresionante

  • wooo!!!!!!!! some guys are just that deep

  • i'm going to see tomorrow dave weckl in köln, germany with mike stern and the wdr big band

by the way the song is called got a match on the album The Elektric Band

  • Great live show ! Excellent musicians and music ! And Dave Weckl, what to say ? So great drummer !

  • Can anyone recommend any other bands that are similar to this one?

  • king crimson. they got a great drummer and guitarist

  • ah yes, they sure do have a great drummer and guitarist, but I wouldn't really consider them "similar" to CCEB except maybe in terms of their level of technical proficiency.

I'm looking for some more modern jazz fusion bands. But thanks for the suggestion!

  • Um yeah...Bill Bruford and Robert Fripp.

  • although i'm not well versed in this genre, i would have to bring up nerve. Jojo mayer's band. little more in the electronica side, but still might wet your pallet. cheers!

  • Wow, Mayer is incredible! I'd love to see him team up with Tom Jenkinson of squarepusher. Thanks for the recommendation.

Although I am looking for more melodic/chordal music recommendations, I realize I'd get more of those if I'd asked the question on a video that doesn't have "Dave Weckl" in the title... He's great though and so is Mayer. Thanks.

  • I'd check out Vital Information. Steve Smith's band. They're pretty sick. Also, check out the song Interwoven Rhythms by them.

  • Dave has so many modern techniques like his Hi piccolo snare, really fast dbl kick ,his own mixer and controls over mics

and in my opinion he the best there is

  • Which song is this?

  • It's called CTA, which stands for Chicago Transit Authority, written by Jimmy Heath. Chick explains that earlier to the audience before they play the song.

  • Thanks, I allready bought the dvd. And i'm listening to it as we speak.

  • it´s crazy

  • Dave is absolutely one of the best drummers ever on this planet

  • great, technical but musical at the same time...not like others. This isn't boring to watch...is interesting.....Not like others. Excelent and influencing drummer. Check Carter Beauford videos too!!

  • why film Corea from under the keyboard? Might as well crop the back of his head..

  • My big first infuence on drums.

    Weckl is the man...

    NBdrums

  • the accents from 1:40 onwards are INSAAAANE. anyone noticed ?? at least 1 guy in the audience :-)

  • I think Dave plays better when he's not heading up his own band. He doesnt have to worry about the other musicians maybe.I don't know, maybe he's just more relaxed, but it just FLOWS here. Tight, and perfect.

  • Comment removed

  • Trust me, you don't get it. But that's okay.

  • fucking dave....

  • no fuck......i think ...to mutch people take time in stupid ...podium places!:::IS NOT FORMULA 1!.......that is music....i play music and i do not think will make a intresting point ...try to place any musician ...witch bring some new colours.....in wath i just say above!:::WASTE OF TIME!

  • xa0x0a0x0x0xa0ax.....ok i'll wait

  • well...that's enough i9've been waiting for two days and nothin happend ....what's going on?

  • Comment removed

  • ha ha ha! now that's funny. kudos to your sense of humor.

  • @Francislikesdrums ha! indeed

  • @Francislikesdrums Hahahaha,

  • Phrased so tightly it's unbelievable at times they are right on the beat

  • wow.....

  • almost sounds like jojo mayer with Nerve!! or the other way around lol

  • They are enjoying!!!

  • the real deal!!

  • this is the best musicians put into the best band... heck chick knew they were so good he made 2 bands with em. (elektric and acoustic)

  • The best...

  • WECKL es el chingon de chingones sea d donde sea

  • how does he manage to catch all those phrases?

  • it's funny how dave treats this whole song as a freeform type deal. you could take away guitars and piano, and it'd be a sweet drum solo.

  • To answer SNEADWIEW below,

ehh,, Thomas Lang is great in both talent and tech but hasn´t got the feeling. It´s like he is choked by his tech and can´t use it in a proper way? I don´t know?

  • How on earth are they syncronized to end up at 2:18 ??? They are machines (with feelings)

  • I hate him

    I really hate him

    hi's amazing

  • me too

    damn his hide!!!! (lol)

  • dave weckl is the sh*t! i love watching his solos on video. i saw his clinic in dallas in dec 2003. its even more badass when you see him live.

  • I stood up and yelled "YES!!!!" while watching this....incredible!

  • 0:34 Corea plays jazz crimes rhythm

1:53 Weckl is doing his thing right there

    bloody amazing.

  • How the heck does he remember all those musical phrases?

  • The cymbal at 0:30 is one of the best things I ever heard.

Weckl is the king of dynamics and musical taste.

    Supernatural technique.

  • wow...now that you mentioned it. 0:30 was very tasteful.

  • As a lifelong drummer... I personnally have to put Dave at the top of my current list. he's the best of the best. Evertime he solos... it different. That the key to a great drummer. Reminds me of Buddy Rich... endless excitement!

  • anyone sitting there on the computer trying to critique others playing, have missed the most important aspect of music: Communication! its not a competition!dave weckl, just like every professional drummer, is communicating their ideas through their instrument. you should appreciate everyone's playing, because you can learn something about EVERY drummer. I learn from teaching my beginner's!! So how about appreciating and not critiquing.

  • snorhyveln, how ignorant are you? Those drummers you just listed are all as good at soloing at Weckl. There's a hundred other drummers I could list too. what on earth makes weckl better than them? Don't be so narrow minded. It's like only eating cheese sandwiches for your entire life. How fucking boring would that be? Very is the answer...

  • Tell me ONE drummer who´s near mr Dave Weckl in soloing?

Don´t come up with Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, Steve Smith, etc etc..

  • To be fair ....Thomas Lang has it on another level - there'd be things both of them could stump the other with, but (agreed) DW is more rounded and developed.

Totally agree about the others being down the ladder a rung or two ...

BUT Vinnie C. (like one guy said) "you never know what he's going to come up with"

I love DW, and believe him to be at the top of the heap, but there is Vinnie to consider.

    Dave is smooth-smooth

    But Vinnie has the fire

    Less homogenized emotionally

    just my 2 cents

  • nooooooooooooooo weckl sos pasado!!!!, cantas con esa bateria!!!!!!!

  • omg.....from 1:53 to 2:07.....the longest "roll" around the kit that i ever heard so far......unbelieveable.

  • The very definition of inconceivable feel, speed, space and cymbal selection! forever my favorite drummer.

  • Amazing strangeness with Awesome relentless Rhythm!

  • This video (and part 2) are in my opinion the best I've heard Weckl, the hottest drummer alive, sound. Just amazing...thanks ja2jadwa for the great videos.

  • It's for me the more pleasantly...

  • man those cymbals sound nice. dave weckl legacy you think?

  • cool a band in which we can ear every instruments!

  • Love dave, but where is the silence/the space/the emotion. Maybe he is just too good and Im missing it all?

  • its the 2ond one

  • haha

  • Did someone say Weckl sounds rehearsed?

If 10,000 other drummers can play what you're playing, then that is much more inclined to sound rehearsed than if maybe 5 to 10 other drummers can play it.

I'd say Weckl falls into the latter category and therefore sounds less rehearsed than probably 99.9999% of all drummers who ever lived! How can you sound rehearsed when you're the only one who can play something? LOL

    Moot point dude.....

  • holy shit that was damn good.

  • Genius.

  • Weckl can play simple groove as well, but not with chick corea dude come on

  • Whos better? Dave or Steve?...I say even though weckl busts out some crazy licks overall gadd is a more musical player.

  • are u fuckin nuts?

  • yeah i agree with you 100 percent. both fabulous drummers, amazing precision, out of this world technique, and whatnot, but alot of weckls stuff sounds so rehearsed and technical, hes always playing such busy stuff. and dont get me wrong, its all amazing, but gadd can really just lay down a groove and truly feel the music

  • Man that was unbelievable! Dave is sick!

  • So musically played dave.... Can enyone se what ride/crash he's using at the left side? Is it a legacy crash 18"? It sounds wonderfull

  • This piece sounds eerily (and wonderfully) like something from the Miles band Chick played in.

    Wonderful stuff!!

    Go Dave!

  • Oh leave Chick alone. The Roman God Jesus is not more real than whatever it is they believe in Scientology.

    Go read a book... a non-fiction book.

  • Comment removed

  • what the fuck ? this is a drum video .

go somewhere else with filosophy shit . dr phill videos perhaps

  • Grow up.

  • Well, that has really nothing to do with filosophy...

  • You all spelled philosophy wrong...

  • Chick - we all love you, but this scientology thing? Sad to hear that you've been infected by it.

    god bless

    still love you

  • i saw dave weckl on monday with mike stern and tom kennedy =) that was great =))

  • I just love Weckl's way of playing. It's totally different from anything that iv'e heard. Even my guitarist know when it's Dave Weckl withouth watching, just listening.

He's my fauvorite drummer and musican!

  • ...know when it's Dave Weckl without watching, just listening.

True so true, play on DW ...

  • I put mu vote next to yours for Dave. The guy's a genius and a joy to listen to. He's my favourite drummer too. No one reaches his ankles.

(this is an opinion from London England)

  • fucking awesome

  • second 49, blast beat

  • HAHAHAHA

  • :-) heheheheeh

  • Funny how these boards turn into insult pages. Don't we just come here to enjoy the great players and watch some videos? What a great one here. Weckl is awesome. So smooth.

  • haha john patitucci looks like a mad scientist with that haircut.

  • Well, not liking Buddy doesn't make people retarded, Its just my taste and I really dont think Im missing something, There are tons of other players I like, including Weckl and other of that level, so Im doing fine, each doing Im playing better, Maybe yes, he was creative back then when everything was new in drumming, nowadays, we have Weckl, Colaiuta, etc... More Ideas, more everything, and theres much more to come, music never ends.

  • Sorry, Cadaverr, I didn't mean to hit the thumbs down button on your last reply. My bad! Finger spaz!

  • drumming is not about speed, its about keeping the time, being musical and being creative. you also need technique to fully develop your ideas. Can you imagine Buddy playing Songo or some Salsa??? Can Buddy do an slower solo???? If his solos were slower you'll notice his lack of creativity , and how easy they are. I mean, if he does the usual in a slower tempo you'll see his poor musical ideas

  • This is as dumb as it gets, "dear" Juan. Anything played really slow gets dumb sooner or later. Imagine yourself Virgil Donati playing his 4 independent bars (one for each limb) very, VERY slowly... the effect is - NO DOUBT - goes down the road. Playing fast means practice and proficiency. Thats a natural process. Its ridiculously obvious. The more you play the faster and flawlessly you will play - and it'll just get more impressive to possible viewers.

  • I really don't know why someone would think that Buddy's playing could have a "lack of creativity" when compared to Weckl. This actually sounds funny to me. Take for example Weckl's famous playing at the (gues who???) BUDDY RICH memorial concert... he was there fighting out the audience's attention with Colaiuta and Gadd and he just failed in his atempt. Very unispired playing. Tasteless for the most part (yeah, his first take was great, but the rest just felt off a 10-floor building).

  • Okay, your right, Im wrong, your just a common drummer who likes buddy, big deal!!!! Im just fine with Weckl, Colaiuta, and guys on that level(supposedly lower). You just probe my point, He's overrated, look how people admire him because of his single strokes. One more thing, the thing you said about fast and slow playing sounds so stupid, and Im not trying to impress people, I just play because I like it. It not about impressing people with speed, playing slower doesnt mean u dont have skill

  • juan, seriously dude, when are you going to post something useful for what you say? Something like an explanation for everything you assert? You call what I said about slow x fast "so stupid" but yet, you never provide me with any justification behind such statement. Why? Why doesn't it make any sense? Why? Where is your freaking discourse articulation? Do you know what "explanation" and "articulation" mean? Would you mind having a real conversation with me?

  • My points are direct. I've exposed the source of everything I said. I gave you crystal-clear examples of my statements, and you? If you want to argue, "give me a call" and I'll take it. As for now, you don't interest me any longer. I'll not reply until something useful and direct-to-the-point-discussed is presented. First grade is over, little juan. Lets argue like adults. Give me some guidance and good explanation on WHY you say what you say and we shall continue. Otherwise, forget it.

  • Not worthy anymore. Uninteresting and childish. :)

  • i meant prove and youre

  • I agree w/ the solo at the B.R. Drum Off. Not Dave's finest hour in solos.(Better than any of us will ever do)! But listen to his work w/ brushes and hi-hat on The Great Pumpkin Waltz (Charlie Brown 25th Anaversary album w/ the C.K. Electric Band. His work is tremendous. And saying his playing is soulless, is heritical! Whoever said Buddy has a lack of creativity should be tied to an ant hill w/ syrup on 'em.

  • Ok, having regarded Weckl's playing as "soulless" was not very intelligent at all. I apologise for that. His Fusion playing is excellent. He was actually my first Drum GOD (his "how to develop technique" instructional video was a huge source of inspiration for me technically wise). Very good. I really like weckl but my most "workshipped God" is Buddy. Lets put it this way. I prefer his technique and playing (overal) but Weckl is still one of my very faves. Just my personal preference after all.

  • You sir, need to go play in traffic. To say that Weckl's solo "wasnt his finest hour" at the BR memorial is preposterous. That solo has more finesse and feel that alot of other solos ive seen by him and others. And weckl is my all time favorite drummer. So please, do us all a favor and take a fatal overdose of your medication.

  • Can you even play a quarter of that solo, let alone even think to play something that creative. Are you even a fucking drummer at all?? You should be shot with the things you say. That man has more talent in his pinky toe than you do in your entire body. Seriously, that solo at the memorial he was not "fighting the audiences attention" you dumbass. At that time weckl was already an established, popular drummer,on the SAME level of vinnie colaiuta, otherwise he wouldn't be there as a showcase.

  • Dave is great, hes got some excellent overall technique and his stick control is excellent but his solos are boring and souless (as an average) when compared to the other greats. Also, you've just said that you simply "don't like Buddy". I think its more a more personal thing than anything else - pushing your judgement far away from a truthful opinion. Do you want slower and tasty? Have a taste on Buddy's playing with the brushes... slower, very musical, tasty and full of swing.

  • You're a waste of time, space, air, flesh, and the rectum you were born from, retard.

  • Buddy played rock, funky jazz, fusion, bolero and other genres really, really well. Maybe you should check more of his videos... just maybe.

  • lol if u only knew who i am...m anywYA I'M RLY DRUNK NOW TRUST ME my brother i'm am right on this one honestly.

  • Dude you are retarded. If you honestly think that Buddy Rich couldn't play Salsa or Latin music you are severely ignorant. No American musicians were playing the shit you see Weckl and Vinnie play back when Buddy Rich was in his prime. He played what he liked which is the definition of feel. That doesn't mean he couldn't play any style. You forget he had an orchestra of highly regarded musicians behind him that he directed and wrote music for.

  • By the way, if you slowed down Buddy's solos they would be much harder than you think they are. And I can't believe i have to explain that to someone. Also, saying that one of the first "drumset" players ever and the first one that really made people think differently about drums lacks creativity is the most rediculous comment i've ever seen on here. Why don't you explain your point of view to your idol Weckl through email and see if he doesn't call you a fucking ignorant douchebag.
