I've been a fan of this band for a long time. It is a mystery to me why they haven't found more success. The music is amazing. It is great rock music.
@mauricioa12 yeah i know there isn't a bass instrument, i mean like, perhaps the treble sound is really high in this video, the song sounds clearer/better to me with headphones listening to to cd.
@mymar86 there is a bass instrument. One of those guitars is a baritone guitar. That's a guitar made to be played an octave below, in the bass guitars range. Jack Bruce played one in the early days of Cream
Thank you Sleater-Kinney for putting Portland on the map; what better way to represent our city than an amazing all female rock n roll band!! And now a moment of silence for all of those unfortunate people in the world who don't know what it's like to live in the Pacific NW...

And now Im living just like that. No matter how much I love S-K, I always try to avoid this song, don't know why I just watched the bloody video.
I wonder if Sleater-Kinney will come out to explain whatever circumstances have actually lead to their decision about indefinite hiatus. I"m pretty sure that none of us are going to be able to hit the mark, with any amount of guesswork, no matter how much emotion one may have, behind it. Let these ladies speak for themselves, already.
I don't understand the thumbs downs. I also think that's an awesome part of their videos of course the best part is the music but come on, that drummer is very nice.
These are rawkin chicks. Heard about them forever but never really checked em out. I'm sure I've heard them many times on college radio, not knowing who I was hearing. Heard this one recently, wondered who it was, googled "i'm not a bird i'm not a plane" and voila....

@Hdpyou Mmmm, that might be a factor, but it isn't the only one. Back when the Strokes released their first album, guitar music held about as much mainstream attention as a symphonic concept album for the Mongolian nose flute. The Strokes show up, loud and abrasive and catching the attention of critics who didn't want a top 40 full of Britney knockoffs, so they pushed this one band a whole bunch. Sleater-Kinney help me find myself as a woman in this world...my only hope is that they get back together maybe..I've seen them once...But the band Denali is getting back together (p.s. their reunion show was AMAZING)
i can see that....too bad i cant carry a ghetto blaster everywhere i go i would if i could....and turn the volume up
wow....and that would be extroverted
ipod headphones are annoying they always get tangled im waiting for a wireless
im not that introverted about music I listen too I have a lastfm account linked to my ipod and it shows what I am listening to Im proud of being open minded and eclectic in my music taste...and im too old to care what anyone else thinks about it...lol
i love this band but honestly corrines voice gets a tad annoying after a while....but i usually overlook it cuz they rock its only when my ipod keeps playing the same 3 songs of theres even though i have alot of there songs....its odd
Franz Ferdinand is in no way 1 of my favorite bands, but if you want to talk "mass produced" look at any band in quite possible one of the most useless genres ever (riot grrl, yeah it's laughable) and you'll see the same song topics and same bad music over and over.
No amount of symbolism can make up for being awful musicians.
40 feet by Franz Ferdinand however is one the more unique songs i've ever heard and better than anything Sleater-Kinney ever did or wished they could have produced.
Good riddance. The "edgey" girl power genre is completely awful anyways. Not to mention that even for indie, they're just bad at their instruments with little to no stage presence in live videos or even for this
It's not that I have anything against girl singers or musicians, i've always liked Rilo Kiley, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Grand Ole Party, but their voices are just annoying to listen to.
I also might just be mad because someone tried to call Franz Ferdinand shitty in comparison to this
You're just plain wrong mate. Franz Ferdinand are a mass-produced, bland little bastards with no feeling in their songs. Listen to the tone of her voice as she sings. Can't you hear how it mirrors the mundanity of work life at the start, then the freedom found by suicide in the last verse. Learn about existentialism, and this will blow you away.
yeah franz ferdinand are a great band. but i also love Sleater-Kinney. I don't like thinking that of them as better than each other. I like both separately.
this band rocks my world!!!!! these women are amazing!!!!! grygazol can suck my balls!!!!!!! what about the ramones you fuckin dickhead, they were playin' the same chords, r they idiots too???? what a jackass you are!!!!!!!
i don't get why do people get so worked up about negative comments on youtube, this video could have no stars and all negative comments and i will still love this song and sleater-kinney.
Its not about the amount of difficulty you stupid fuck. Its about its not about what other people label Sleater Kinney. It has alot more music to it than most and that they are a 1-dimensional band that has only one sound makes them that much better. gg Gyrgazol
I'm not an expert in music, I can only say that song sounds good to me or that it doesn't. I don't know if they are "edgy" but I know that they sound very good to me. I love Sleater-Kinney!
Okay..."Entertain" was more what I was expecting from this band. Even "You're No Rock N' Roll Fun" would've met my expectations a bit. Plus they show a LOT more talent than is shown on this.
This song and "Modern Girl" don't really fit the "edgy" label they've received. They're too soft or basic to ever be considered edgy.
This and 'modern girl' are both from The Woods, which was a bit of a different sound for them, so maybe you'd prefer their earlier stuff. Check out the song 'one beat' if you so desire. I am pretty fond of most of their stuff though, so, biased :P
Esta banda suena muy bien...buena mezcla entre batería y guitarras mejor que muchas bandas de hombres hoy en día...y ese solo de guitarra me recuerdan los mejor tiempos del rock and roll ...
I've heard a lot of hype and good reviews for this band, but this is the first time I've actually heard them.
This was pretty disappointing. Pretty rudimentary chords (repeated ad nauseum) and those two should never try to sing at the same time. They had no harmony at all and it really sounded bad. The one who looked like an office secretary (on the right side of the video, light brown hair) should probably not do any more singing for the band. The other one had a very pretty voice, though.
Oh, then I suppose that you are just about the king/queen of music, huh? I suppose that you can sing better than anyone and play guitar better than Hendrix can. If you are so frickin' good then why don't you tell the me what tuning they were using to play this song that you tried to blast to the earth with your petty criticism that show that you simply cannot handle any music with an edge sharper than Billy Joel's. I cannot wait until your on the business end of other peoples ass lancing words
I didn't claim to be. I never said I could sing or perform better than them.
This isn't edgy. Edgier than Billy Joel, yes. Edgier than rock bands they're competing against, a definite NO. So are they aiming for the Adult Contemporary charts?
This is why I was disappointed. I kept hearing how edgy they were. But they sound more like Wilson Phillips (vocally), which is the EPITOME of edginess, right?
Any idiot can sit there and pluck the same string over and over again.
But there's no style to this. There's no EFFORT to this. Maybe this was just a bad example to listen to.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't like this. Everyone can like what they want. People can also DISLIKE what they want to.
I just can't believe that a group as acclaimed as this one ended up being so basic. Bad singing isn't edgy. Pulling one string isn't edgy. Even singing about suicide or death isn't particularly edgy.
i don't think they are hyped up. especially now they are practically ignored, at least from a popular music standpoint. i actually prefer the other vocalist fyi. you are fixated on this edgy bit. i wouldn't call them edgy either, but that doesn't make them bad or basic. i think people like them because they are genuine, no frills, rocker chicks..which is few and far between.
IMO to say there is no effort is an exaggeration. for rock music to SEEM effortless is a good thing.
Please shut the fuck up. Based on your favorites you enjoy Rammstein, Franz Ferdinand, and Hootie & The Blowfish among other shitty acts.
So don't talk about bands not having style or effort when your favorites are filled with generic band inndie and stuff no one really liked in the 90s.

I know. The comment was intended for comedic purposes but loses what little value it had when not displayed in it's proper context.

vinyls are great but you cant play it everywhere you go
i think snobs are way more annoying...theres nothing wrong with honesty
midnightaria 3 years ago
I'm just not a fan of music being so introverted , there's nice snobs and then there are snobs I guess...
thehibtones 3 years ago
i can see that....too bad i cant carry a ghetto blaster everywhere i go i would if i could....and turn the volume up
wow....and that would be extroverted
ipod headphones are annoying they always get tangled im waiting for a wireless
im not that introverted about music I listen too I have a lastfm account linked to my ipod and it shows what I am listening to Im proud of being open minded and eclectic in my music taste...and im too old to care what anyone else thinks about it...lol

i love this band but honestly corrines voice gets a tad annoying after a while....but i usually overlook it cuz they rock its only when my ipod keeps playing the same 3 songs of theres even though i have alot of there songs....its odd
midnightaria 3 years ago
you know what's annoying? iPods...ugh. Got their first album on vinyl (one of my first), it's the kind of record you simply don't want to end.

Alterationnn 3 years ago
real riot grrl bands r good, like bratmobile not sleaterkinney
gigalo345 3 years ago
Good riddance. The "edgey" girl power genre is completely awful anyways. Not to mention that even for indie, they're just bad at their instruments with little to no stage presence in live videos or even for this
It's not that I have anything against girl singers or musicians, i've always liked Rilo Kiley, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Grand Ole Party, but their voices are just annoying to listen to.
I also might just be mad because someone tried to call Franz Ferdinand shitty in comparison to this
CelebratorDevestator 3 years ago
You're just plain wrong mate. Franz Ferdinand are a mass-produced, bland little bastards with no feeling in their songs. Listen to the tone of her voice as she sings. Can't you hear how it mirrors the mundanity of work life at the start, then the freedom found by suicide in the last verse. Learn about existentialism, and this will blow you away.
horrorshowmalchick 3 years ago
I like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, but you think Franz Ferdiland is better than Sleater-Kinney? Wow, you're music tastes suck. Enjoy your stay.
ILikeShinny 3 years ago
yeah franz ferdinand are a great band. but i also love Sleater-Kinney. I don't like thinking that of them as better than each other. I like both separately.

i don't get why do people get so worked up about negative comments on youtube, this video could have no stars and all negative comments and i will still love this song and sleater-kinney.
mightyPants 3 years ago 5
Its not about the amount of difficulty you stupid fuck. Its about its not about what other people label Sleater Kinney. It has alot more music to it than most and that they are a 1-dimensional band that has only one sound makes them that much better. gg Gyrgazol

I'm not an expert in music, I can only say that song sounds good to me or that it doesn't. I don't know if they are "edgy" but I know that they sound very good to me. I love Sleater-Kinney!
P.S. People in USA are lucy ;)
wasamir 3 years ago 3
Okay..."Entertain" was more what I was expecting from this band. Even "You're No Rock N' Roll Fun" would've met my expectations a bit. Plus they show a LOT more talent than is shown on this.
This song and "Modern Girl" don't really fit the "edgy" label they've received. They're too soft or basic to ever be considered edgy.
Grygazol 3 years ago
haha, i answered the other one before reading this one..so disregard the redundancies.
montynegronow 3 years ago
This and 'modern girl' are both from The Woods, which was a bit of a different sound for them, so maybe you'd prefer their earlier stuff. Check out the song 'one beat' if you so desire. I am pretty fond of most of their stuff though, so, biased :P
hewhosayszonk 3 years ago 2
Esta banda suena muy bien...buena mezcla entre batería y guitarras mejor que muchas bandas de hombres hoy en día...y ese solo de guitarra me recuerdan los mejor tiempos del rock and roll ...

write a song about the beginning write it out loud so the people can hear it!!!!
oblique65 3 years ago
Anyone know what this song is REALLY about?
A girl committed suicide off the Golden Gate bridge, apparently it takes 4 seconds from the time you jump until you hit the water and die.
They made this as a tribute to her.
Even if you think the song sucks,
And the chords are bad,
And they aren't 'edgy' think about what the SONG is ABOUT, and maybe then, you can keep your stupid ass, ignorant comments to yourself?
Good.

Grygazol 3 years ago
On a side note, using the envelope windows to make a set of wings was a pretty cool concept. The finished product looked great!
Grygazol 3 years ago 2
Lucky for you they've split up!!
billface23 3 years ago
Oh, then I suppose that you are just about the king/queen of music, huh? I suppose that you can sing better than anyone and play guitar better than Hendrix can. If you are so frickin' good then why don't you tell the me what tuning they were using to play this song that you tried to blast to the earth with your petty criticism that show that you simply cannot handle any music with an edge sharper than Billy Joel's. I cannot wait until your on the business end of other peoples ass lancing words
vegitar556 3 years ago
vegitar --
I didn't claim to be.
Grygazol 3 years ago
you should know that rock music isn't always about skill, its about style. actually, i would argue that most art is that way.
montynegronow 3 years ago
But there's no style to this. There's no EFFORT to this. Maybe this was just a bad example to listen to.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't like this. Everyone can like what they want. People can also DISLIKE what they want to.
I just can't believe that a group as acclaimed as this one ended up being so basic. Bad singing isn't edgy. Pulling one string isn't edgy. Even singing about suicide or death isn't particularly edgy.
In my opinion, the hype was unwarranted.
Grygazol 3 years ago
i don't think they are hyped up. especially now they are practically ignored, at least from a popular music standpoint. i actually prefer the other vocalist fyi. you are fixated on this edgy bit. i wouldn't call them edgy either, but that doesn't make them bad or basic. i think people like them because they are genuine, no frills, rocker chicks..which is few and far between.
IMO to say there is no effort is an exaggeration. for rock music to SEEM effortless is a good thing.
montynegronow 3 years ago
Dear Grygazol,
Please shut the fuck up. Based on your favorites you enjoy Rammstein, Franz Ferdinand, and Hootie & The Blowfish among other shitty acts.
So don't talk about bands not having style or effort when your favorites are filled with generic band inndie and stuff no one really liked in the 90s.
Thanks.
