Because, the acceleration of the car itself is faster than using nitro.
The nitro is only effective above 225 mph. Any lower, it just slows you down. Which is why the Mclaren always have the better edge as its high acceleration with nitro can recover its loss speed after corners.

this game sucks so bad! The physics are terrible there is no way a car would skid at those speeds around corners, the car would either flip over or the tires would burst.
