  • he sounds so much like bob dylan here, or is it the opposite?

  • I've been told his music was playing when I was conceived... not that I remember much. Later on my father kept his black suit all through the 80's. Summers in Ibiza, Leonard's music, beauty everywhere, precious childhood...

Thank you Mr. Cohen - wishing you many more years on this planet.

  • Simply genius!

  • Leonard Cohen est né à Montréal au Québec! Il a vécu à Wesmount au coeur de l'île de Montréal..

  • leanoard cohen - possible the greatest song writer of all time - this scen in pirate radio is amazing as is the entire movei - as is the song!

  • Many people do not know about Cohen, but I kind of like it thay way. Its like he sings for a lucky few of us and that makes what he dose more special, at least to me anyways...

  • the boat that rocked (pirate radio) brought me here

  • @FourEyedMayhem

    me to. great movie.

  • @FourEyedMayhem Every song from the film has at least one Comment like that.

  • @FourEyedMayhem

Hearing this song throughout my life all the way back as far as I can remember brought me here.

  • @PigLover69 good for you, i'm not saying that the boat that rocked is where this song came from...im just saying the film made it more recognized

  • @FourEyedMayhem me too

  • Buena musica.-

  • such a nice song..

  • awwwww butterball is soooooo cute, thank you mcrichierich!!!

  • Takes me way back

  • It sucks that people are logging onto youtube and typing in stuff like 'lady gaga' instead of this..

  • @cantpickaname15 It does... but look how many dislikes this has... 51. look how many people like her have.. hundreds... it just shows who's the better singer.

  • @cantpickaname15 no it isn't

  • @cantpickaname15 :

Nah, not really :) It's the same way with americans - if not for them, how'd we know that most other people are actually smart :D ?

  • @MultiKmet ..Hey mistah smarty pants, why are you listening to all the stupid American music, if you so smart ?

  • @DavidCKendall

uh, mista aynsteen, exactly coz of this reason, yo man dumbassa :D :

Leonard Cohen is Canadian born ;) unless, of course, you claim that Canada is part of the US :D

But, seriously, see what i mean? You guys 're funny in a dumb way. besides that, i got nothin' against you of course, besides your teenie-weenie fascist state and all the shit it's cooking up. But, the good side is, that is only your government, i'm sure you a nice guy, you got my polite benefit of a doubt :D Hugs!

  • @MultiKmet Ok we botha da loser, a cause de America is a continent, not the U.S..Dis bigga continent includes Canada,U.S.,Mexico and all of South America. But I digressa. In honesty, I did confuse Leonard with Paul Simon in a New York kinda way, so my bad. Worse, I agree with the fascist shit comment. That's a why I move to France. So now that we cleared this all up, I accept-a you hug..:{)

  • @DavidCKendall

    The it's settled :)

    Best wishes to you!

  • @cantpickaname15 Dude, get a clue. I'm sick of people posting stupid comments like this on a public forum. Leonard Cohen being awesome does not equate to Lady GaGa being bad. I don't even particularly like GaGa at all but you can't make a sweeping statement like that. Who gave you the right to call the shots on what music deserves to be listened to and appreciated more than others? And also, to the 26 people who 'liked' this ignorant comment, you're extremely unintelligent. You guys suck.

  • @cantpickaname15 who the fuck is lady gaga?

  • @cantpickaname15 I've already logged in and typed 'So long Marianne', and I am 18.

  • ME ENOJO Y SoNrió #eso

  • @chicobond89: Oh man you just brought back so many memories.. Late at night listening to am radio hoping that I'd get good reception .. We had radio Luxemburg back then .. nice memories.. !!

  • @TheJakubin haha probably.

  • I wish that he is GOD!

  • leonard who?

  • He is God. My all time favourite artist. Classy, smart and talented - I hope it's not a dying breed.

  • So sad. But so good.

  • Wonderful memories...

  • Thats my name. My dad always sung this to me and I never understood it was a song. This is rather nice.

  • Listen to Nemo Shaw singing a slower version of 'Hey, that's no way to say goodbye' - fresh from the studio.

  • thumbs up if youre here because of Ween's the pod.

  • Fabulous love song; - I lived just a few yards of the park he met her; Marianne, in Oslo Norway - the park is the Vigeland park at Majorstuen...

    ed

    w w w eddy nu

  • As of right now, there are only 1,693,201 views.... How can that be??!! How can justin bieber and those other NO-TALENT yahoo's have at least twice as many views (if not more)... Makes me nauseous....

  • @soothsayer1985

    Totally agree!!!

  • @soothsayer1985 Because when this song was popular there were only about 3 billion people on the planet, and publicists did not do for Leonard Cohen what the do for Beiber with the 7 Billion people on the planet today. Its too bad really. Leonard Cohen is a literary genius, and an amazing song writer.

  • Check out Nemo Shaw's new cover of Cohen's 'Hey, that's no way to say goodbye' - smoothe and gentle!

  • Leonard Cohen is truly awesome. Listening to his songs is simply relaxing and inspiring.

  • Magnifique chanson

    TheCARENTAN

  • Brings back so many memories for me..my first love...my first drunken session with vodka, and school dinners...so long Marianne..I guess your with the sisters of mercy now.

  • @libraryquiet This is him singing...

  • @Distortion0 That's my point. He sings alright I suppose but sometimes it sounds a little off.

  • @libraryquiet libraryquiet did you somehow miss the last 70 years of popular music starting with billy holiday in which delivery and emotional presence took precedence over technical precision? his voice is awesome, its a story in and of itself.

  • @sgould3 "Delivery and emotional presence," is what I look for in a performer. I'm sorry but he doesn't do it for me. We're all individually different as far as music preference is concerned and you know that. What I hear, you don't and what you hear.., I don't. And that's okay but don't think for a minute I don't appreciate popular music, past or present. All because I don't consider Leonard Cohen a good singer. You'd be very wrong my friend. He's good for what he is, another color.

  • :)

  • im 13 years old and I knew this song 4 years ago (and I still love it )

ps why are you fightin in every you tube video!!??

  • Ahhh the memories.

  • He's transcendant at London Live. The dvd shows every subtile expression and respectful interaction with his back-up performers. He has grown into his soul.

  • studio version ..

    @panamatraveltips

  • la chambre je pleurais au son de marianne

  • is there some kind of mission to get a certain name on on every songs response grow the heck up you foolish air thieves.

  • Oh Marianne pass me the joint... ♪

  • I might go, out of curiousness, but i gotta bring my ghetto blaster and play Mountain's Mississipi Queen. Didn't know you had return tickets.

  • A LOS 15 AÑOS LA ESCUCHE Y ES LO MAS BONITO QUE HE OIDO EN MI VIDA.ADEMAS ME LLAMO MARIANNA.ANTES NO ME GUSTABA MI NOMBRE, AL OIR LA CANCION CAMBIÒ MI MANERA DE VER MI NOMBRE.MAGIA PURA SU VOZ.

  • nice :p

  • wow such sorrow in a single song

it reminds me of other such wonderful artists

  • ik mis hem nu ol bedank

  • story of my life at the moment

  • What I don't understand is that this song is fantastic, I think his Live in London version is better but this is still great, and this only gets 1.5 million views but a puppy going down some stairs gets 3 million views!

  • @mcrichierich @chicobond89 I think you should stop worrying about those views numbers.

That's you tube, accept it : People come here to watch stupid videos with puppies, babies, justin bieber etc.!

People who want to find quality music have stereos in their homes with big amps and expensive speakers,

    they don't need youtube !!!

  • @riqyl32 Fair point.

  • @mcrichierich some people pefer puppies

  • @mcrichierich it's not about having the most views... music is more than a competition on youtube!

  • @AnjaAndTheOthers I know that I was just saying that it is odd and i didn't rly need a platitude to remind me of that.

  • @mcrichierich perhaps if we play to the best of both audiences and sync So long, Marianne to a video of a puppy going down stairs, as though that puppy were named Marianne and were going down the stairs in order to leave, then, by flawed logic, it would surely receive at least at least 4.5 million views.

  • @luckyold317 Haha absolute genius I hope i find that video one day.

  • @mcrichierich so what if it gets less views?

  • @mcrichierich that's because we live in the time of ADHD. It's a time when a puppy going...hey look a rubber chicken...so, as I was saying I love ice cream!

  • @mcrichierich: Yes but that makes us special.. stuff the puppy !!

  • @celticlofts Well maybe it's just you that's special if you want to stuff a puppy.

  • Timeless classic!

  • @raynorman Two words that say it all...........

  • This composition is quite a piece of history. It is deeply moving and such a joy to listen to after years have passed. A kind of way to revisit moments of our lives and of those whom touched our hearts.

  • hi, im one years old. ive havent found a master piece as poetically compacted and rich since my mom's heart beating.

  • @themanunknown9 Now that's a good youtube compliment.

  • @tuberez !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Al pacino and Dustin Hoffmann

  • You held on to me like I was a crucifix,

as we went kneeling through the dark.

    "Poetic genius",than you Mr.Cohen.....

  • A song-writing and story-telling GOD.

  • one more time... so long Maryanne, it's time that we began to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.... I can't stop singing it. The instruments perfect.

  • God, I hate it when that fuckin' Mormon Church ad comes on before a video by someone who would just despise what the Mormon Church (and any organized religion advertising on youtube) stands for. Annoying.

  • @Alli8833 I never get a Mormon ad. I seem to get Summit Racing ads every time. The ads that pop up are directed to potential customers, by finding cookies left behind on individual computers. I think someone's been surfing Mormon porn, on your computer.

  • I love this song....

  • Love it but too depressing.

  • @HeathenMoniker , it's a lovely song

  • I first heard this in the 1970's and is still one of my favourite Cohen tracks.

  • I first heard of Leonard Cohen in the 1970's and this still ramians my favourite.

  • It turns out to be not a so good idea to post mp3s on YouTube. I think the word was torrents not tubes. So long, Marianne, it's time we began to laugh and cry and . . .

  • HE SOUND LIKE DYLAN HERE

  • Da giovane assomigliava ad Al Pacino ai tempi del Padrino! Oddio nella foto a 3:45 è identico! X''D

  • @jackonfire85 i think your saying that al pacino looks like leonard? yeah! in the time of scarface hell yeah! :D

  • @Juryes112 Yes! That's right! hahaha ;-D

  • 38 people went outta their way to give this a thumbs down.......Instead of just enjoying it like the rest of us,they found something negative in the song....They must lead very boring lives.....

  • I remember this song as being the first I listened to in 1981 when I took my first ever road-trip with my parents. I was 2 back then... One could say that "it's a lie, there's no way you remembering that..." Guess what? I do, and vividly too.

This song always made me think, no matter what I did or where I was.

    Thank you Mr. Cohen!

  • @kunistvan Many people have memories of impressive events when they were very young. Those who don't choose to disbelieve those of us who do.

  • @difa2ol It's simply overwhelming the fact that i can remember every single detail... We had a Renault 12 back then, a red one, we where on the road to the Black Sea and we stopped for about 2 weeks at Brasov to visit some friends... OMG, it's so vivid it frightens me...

  • in the whole long 15 years of my life how come i've never come across this beautiful song ?

  • @TheAnonymousTeen

    Well you have now!

  • You Tube Stop the commercials!!!!!! I suggest we boycott the advertisers that bombard us here. I am.

  • Leonard Cohen is the greatest lyricist ever! Just found a guy named Genry Gene who also has pretty good lyrics. Check out his song "I"ll Wander"

  • Legend

  • I'm a 97,045 year old robot. I've come back in time because my ancestors eliminated the last humans in 2111 (you had been confined to Zoos at the time for 70 years). Well we are bored now. We want to relocate Leonard Cohen to our time because he is so fine & human, but in case he's gets too lonely or bored we are thinking of bringing some of his Youtube commentators along for kicks. (We figure you guys won't escape and fight back or anything.)

  • @oregonghostwave I want, I want, I want to come too...

  • @jolangjolang Alrighty, just so happens we use a base 3 number system Mr. I want I want I want, so put this wafer on yr tounge and prepare to be nostalgic for a your future past!

  • Blasphemy! I know your kind Gargutron! The Earth musician known as Leon-ard Cohen belongs to the Xenoids! His soothing music has allowed our people to procreate for centuries, and has been a source of inspiration ever since he first visited our planet in 2467!
