  • Yikes, this is all so good. But the Carlos Santana is about as unconvincing (tone-wise) as I've ever heard. The playing is awesome, but it doesn't have that fat saturated tone that I was expecting.

  • @poneyboy23 Thanks! Well, maybe I wasn't so lucky with that one, although at the time it seemed like I was pretty close.. But in the end, I guess the main part of a guitarists' sound comes from his/her fingers and soul, so it's hard to copy this even if you have the best guitar gear in the world.. ;-)

  • @rednebb I'm just a wanna be - please realize that. I'm totally amazed at your playing, simply wonderful. I understand that one can tweak that system down to the very detailed level, so I would imagine that it's all in one's patience and willingness to endlessly tweak. But then, do you really want to be a carbon copy?

Do you feel that the Axe is a true replacement of your good tube amps, or is it just a really really good sounding emulator? Can you hear the difference?

  • @poneyboy23 ;-) Thanks again! To some guitarists, tube amps are and always will be, the only "real thing", but I think that more and more guitarists, including me, are realizing that products like the Axe-Fx eliminate the need for tube amps and the hassle that comes with them.. I haven't A/B tested the Axe-Fx next to a tube amp myself (I've sold mine..), but with the great presets and a little bit of tweaking, I'm sure you could make the Axe-Fx sound almost identical to any amp in the world..

  • Every time I get frustrated with my Axe-FX standard, I come and watch this video. It reminds me that it's my own human error, and not the "digital sound" that I trick myself into hearing.

I think a lot of people need to remember that it sounds as good or better than a recorded amp, not necessarily an amp in the room! Great stuff

  • @thepatient03 Thanks, and well said ;-)

  • What gauge of strings are you using on the pink strat? Just curious, thanks.

  • @drkam6 .010-046, like I do on most of my guitars (btw, it's red, not pink.. ;-)

  • @rednebb Thank you Ketil, the bends on the Floyd excerpts are unbelievable... and done on 10's, wow!

  • @drkam6 Thanks again :-)

  • @rednebb Isn't it called fiesta red;)

  • @Kevinrhoe Yes, or Ferrari Red maybe.?. ;-)

  • I too came for the demo and stayed for the playing. You've really done your homework and play great!

  • @newyorkhatco Thanks, appreciate that!

  • Fantastic sound, fantastic performace, great song selection ;)

  • @bushibayushi Thank you!

  • Wow you're an amazing player. Awesome.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to not only demo this hardware, but to give a rundown of the settings AND GUITAR PICKUPS USED! It's so tough to be able to objectively look at audio samples when people don't include the pickup info. Also, incredible playing!

  • @vikingguitar Thanks!

  • Playing like that you don't need the axe fx, you can plug into a fridge and it will be the same, great playing man!!!

  • @martinorkg Haha, I don't know about the fridge, but thanks anyway :-)

  • Dude is freaking awesome!

  • Positively fantastic, man!! Excellent playing, and great job of capturing the vibe of each of the tunes. I REALLY want one of these now! lol

  • @klextacy .-)

  • Just. Plain. Awesome.. not only are you demoing extraordinary gear.. you're also an excellent guitarist... MANY kudos.. keep it up!!

  • @pulley1fan Thanks!

  • Thank you Ketil for the amazing demo, this was excellent and beyond all expectations!

  • Wait are these all presets?!

or did you dial them yourself?

  • @lavastrat I used the factory presets as a starting point, but there was some tweaking involved, just a little on some presets, quite a lot on others.. Read the on-screen text for more details.

  • Du er latterlig god, Ketil! =)

Hvor får du backing track´a ifra?

    Oddmund

  • @StratMagix Tusen takk!

  • really love the sound you got for Another Brick In The Wall... makes me looking forward to recieve my Axe FX II :)

  • @neocroth Thank you! I just got mine.. ;-)

  • That Jeff Beck tone is INSANE!

  • again..thanks man..you are really great..and I loved what I saw..

  • (8)

  • that europa cover was epic!

  • Nice tunes man!

is there a way you can use the distortion and overdrive of fractual to activate at the same time?

  • can you turn on both a distortion and an overdrive at the same time? I mean is there a setting where you can activate distortion and overdrive both from the fractual not the amps overdrive?

    Nice tunes man!

  • @chemfolks Yes, the Axe-Fx have two amp blocks and two drive blocks, so if you want, you can have up to two amps and two drive pedals going on simultaneously, with complete separate settings. And you can program/set up a footswitch to turn on drive 1 and drive 2 simultaneously.

  • 4 the expression pedal, r u usin the fractal audio 1 designed exactly 4 the axe-fx, or not? cos im pretty tempted 2 get tht as well :P

  • @satansskidmarks Now I have the Fractal Audio MFC-101 midi foot controller, but when I made these videos I just used a simple on/off footswitch and a Roland EV-5 expression pedal connected to the two footswitch outputs on the back of the Axe-Fx. You can set them up to to different things for each preset.

  • Outstanding job man!

  • That Hot for Teacher really suprised me.

  • Outstanding!

  • just watched all your axe fx videos really awesome stuff is this the axe fx direct into a desk ?

  • @kakashihatake1321 Yes, read full video description for more info. Thanks!

  • Ogromny Talent poprostu powala

  • very inspirational video, I loved watching it

  • great playing, but where is the Black Sabbath?

  • @xntrickk I left them out, sorry..

  • Good played demo, thanks. But i immediately hear its digital, the hype say its suppose to be the real deal.Sounds like a very chic modeler.

  • @84eugenie Thanks. But you should hear it in real life played through a high quality sound system, then I think you would think differently. Youtube doesn't do it justice soundwise. Yes, it's digital like almost anything else nowadays, but digital doesn't necessary have to be bad, does it? It's become common among many guitarists to regard anything that's digital badly, but there are constant development of new and better products. Personally I like this unit better than any old tube amp..

  • @rednebb Okay i agree it,s probably the most impressive sound i,ve ever heard from a digital box. Effects, clean sound,Low gain crunch apear to be it,s strongest points, from what i,ve heard. But i still prefer rocktron prophesy,s picking click in high gain. Sounds more like a tube head to me

  • @84eugenie dude, i just got one and my guitar teacher and I played it through a hughes and kettner VS250 power amp, and 2 1x12 cabs... sounded like a million bucks. even with a cheap marshall power amp and a crate block, it sounded like one of the coolest things ever. we have yet to find a single glitch in it, and it produces the same damn quality of just normal sound as the hughes and kettner access preamp, and that was when we didn't even change the settings.

  • @zoso4563 I told you so.. ;-)

  • @zoso4563 Well, cheers man!An engineers dream isn,t it?I,d love to hear it!

  • @zoso4563 Oh man one Splawn Nitro and there goes ax f-x COMPLETELY crushed to bits n bites.I mean totally permanent!!!!

  • @zoso4563 Oh man,one Splawn Nitro and there goes axe f-x, completely crushed to bits n bites.I mean totally ready for scrap metal!

  • @zoso4563,

Cool! My bass player just got an Ultra (I know...seems like overkill for bass, but we do a Tool-tribute, and he uses a ton of effects, distortions, etc!) Anyways, it's a beast! He's now duplicating his Ampeg SVT/TC-Electronics G-Force rig!

I'm saving up for one, and guess what it will be replacing?: H&K Access Pre-amp; H&K VS-250 Power-amp; and a Rocktron Replifex! (Similar to your old rig!) BTW, I've used my H&K rig for 18-years, but I can't wait to try the Fractal!

  • @billmeedog oh dude are you sellin the vs250 by any chance?

  • @84eugenie Doesn't sound digital at all to me sorry my friend.

  • @84eugenie think you're wrong. i got mine 2.5 weeks ago, took it to a big gig last weekend (5.000+ people), on a soundcheck I had soundguys running up to the stage to check out what the heck was the unit I'm using. The sound in a venue was incredible, like a stack of 100W amps with a wall of cabinets. After 25yrs in music, this is my best investment ever. Check out youtube user DRAGIANNI, he's been using the ultra for about a month both in studio and live, he's overwhelmed with the unit.

  • Another great one! I'm a fairly versatile guitarist but you got it over me bro! Fractal Audio should hire you or at least link to this post; you really bring out the excellence of this device. And again thanks for the parameters. They are going to be the starting point for my own customizations.

  • came for a simple demonstration look...ended up staying and watching about 24 minutes of your playing...good stuff man

  • @SquishyQ Cool, thanks!

  • I have wet dreams about being able to play like you.

  • first i wanna say, well done, you played eveything so good, ... better than the original songs ..

second ... man this pre-amp is insane !!! must better than those tri-axis and bullshit ... this is the real thing !!!

  • @GusBounas Thanks! (But I think you're exaggerating a bit when you say it's better than the originals..;-)

  • @rednebb i have a question though ....

how much this costs > and how can i get it in europe ?

man i fall in loe with this pre-amp

actually today i'm using guitar rig 4, but man! this one is far better !

  • @GusBounas Go to the G66 website (see link in the beginning and end of my video), there you'll find all the info you need.

  • hey congratulations... do you know where I can downloads these backing tracks tha you use??? thanks!

  • @madgrass16 Thanks! They come from various sources, I've used the sites guitarbt and guitarbackingtrack a lot, but I also edited and made some of them myself .

  • Yeah dude you really have done an excelent job covering all this songs i'm very happy with that thx a lot!

  • man me and my brother watched all your videos!!!!!! holy shit man you covered the whole world and you covered exactly the same and so freaking well!!!! exactly like original records.... thumbs up to you my man, rock on \m/

  • @dayoos11 Cool, thanks! And say hello to your brother :-)

    Regards, Ketil

  • You're great man. And great backing tracks.

  • man, congratulations, u r very good, and whit a great arsenal

  • Just ordered my Ultra today. These videos were critical in my decision to purchase an Axe-Fx a year ago. Thanks!

  • @Soopahmahn Cool, thanks!

  • Great tunes!!

I'm getting this to pair with a triaxis and a 2:90!!nothing else I need I must say!!

    Great skill mate!!and awesome preview!

Seriously Axe fx is the best of it's kind along with eventide eclipse!

  • @oblivion4lcf Thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • You are such a great guitarrist!!

    My opinion:

Eruption lacks of reverb, plus Bohemian Rhapsody solo is not so similar as tone.

Time and Run like hell needs a bit of feedback into the delay section.

But the rest is really impressive.....:-)

  • @dado5150 Thanks! I agree that the Brian May sound isn't quite there, but that's a difficult sound to nail.. And I must admit I didn't work a lot on the reverb and delay settings in general, I focused mainly on the "amp" sounds.

  • Hmmm, I guess it is just me cause everyone is raving about the Axe-FX?

I think the Axe sound is synthetic and muffled (1 dimensional).

    Great playing though!

  • @VoxJ Ok, but maybe it 's because of the well-known Youtube quality degradation? When I listen to it here on Youtube myself, I agree it sounds a bit "muffled", like most Youtube videos, but the original recording on my computer sounds much better, of course. Thanks!

  • Ketil, du bist ein geile Typ........

  • what means DRV in the Dire Straits preset ?

  • @xJan008x Drive

  • @rednebb

    okay thanks ;)

  • This is how reviews should be done JUST SHUT UP AND PLAY IT so we CAN HEAR IT, not some DICKWEED talk about how it does this and that.

    BTW nice GUITAR collection

  • @HillaryHitler ;-) Thanks!

  • @HillaryHitler yeah thats why i hate reviews, and this is as well entertaining (cuz hes playing actual songs and very good, demonstrating all the shit this axe fx can do and sound when u play)

  • Every solo you played was absolutely beautiful dude. Great job.

  • @mmadden94 Thanks!

  • Great playing!! you really displayed the awesome potential of the Axe-fx :). just wondering is it connected to 1 atomic cab or is mono cab possible? suitable for low volume bedroom playing? thanks.

  • @KarrollProductions Thanks! For the recording I just went straight, didn't use the Atomic. For live use you can run one Atomic in mono, or two in stereo, depends on how much you want to carry to the gig.. And you can turn the Atomic(s) as low as you want, of course, you don't have to disturb the neighbours.. Or if you've hooked the Axe-Fx to a mixer or directly to your pc, you can just play through your pc monitors or headphones, of course, that's what I do most of the time.

  • eruption is AWESOME

  • @pfarina Thanks!

  • Great guitarist - great demo - great kit. Superb. Now to find the perfect bank robber.....

  • Man you are a hell of a guitarist!

  • Wonderful demo.

  • Fab demo, great playing, so many styles.

    Bravo maestro.

  • @tellycastin Thanks!

  • -/\o_

I bow down to the Master.

    Absolutely awesome

  • @Ketil Strans Love the "led boots" tone you got going for the demo. I wonder if you have any demo's with some of the more milky delay sounds Jeff Beck uses on some of his more recent work (by recent I mean last couple decades).

  • @beatnikcafe Thanks! No, I'm afraid I havent' done any of Beck's "newer " material. I have done "Cause we've ended as lovers" also, though, it's on my video "Evolution of Rock Guitar (the Real guitar heroes) part II"

  • You leave me speechless, man! Your skills are impressive. How many hours could you play all that great riffs and solos??? :D

  • i don't know what impresed me more - the AxeFx unit or Ketil Strans. Respect, respect in every way.

  • @lowyaw Thank you very much!

  • Wow how did you have the time to learn all of those songs? You can play them note for note exactly like they were on the orginal recordings, that's amazing! Also you definitely sold the Axe fx on me, I am going to look into getting one soon.

  • After watching a few demos of Axe, I must say this one actually made me see what the hub bub with Axe was all about. Well done.

  • @dose160 Cool, thank you very much!

  • @rednebb After watching this all I can say is that not everything is the amp (effects unit) it depends mainly in the player thats why this sounds so good

  • @dose160 Thanks!

  • Run like hell was awesome!

  • This thing is awesome.

  • The fucking best love santana

  • ok first of all i have to say, you have to be the best youtube guitarist ever. i have a question. if i were to buy this, what else should i buy with it if i want to play it straight through my laptop. be as specific as possible. please and thankyou.

  • @corbin1bleu1fan123 That's way too much, but thank you very much for saying that.. Well, you really don't need anything else, except maybe a mixer for better control. For this and other videos I'm just going straight from the Axe-Fx into a small mixer and into my computer. And you might need a separate audio interface of some kind to get good quality audio, of course, if your laptop isn't capable of this.

  • You my friend, Ketil are a pleasantly found complete player. :)

  • @fergusmccool Thanks for saying that, but I definitely don't think I'm a complete player myself, I just love to play different things and try to get away with it..;-)

  • animal , felicitaciones. genio.

  • the another brick on the wall setting was sick

  • Are your presets available? Best axe-fx vid I have seen. Exactly what I was looking for-the tones in context of real music.

  • @cougarLP Thanks! Yes, send me a PM and I'll give you a download link.

  • @rednebb Are you letting people just have your presets mate? Thats very generous!

  • @cougarLP - I would really like to get some of his presets as well.

  • great job

  • Sound Amazing!!!!..

  • you're an awesome player! great sounds man...

  • @unlike13 Thank you!

  • This isn't expensive at all compared to if you wanted to get a real amp or all the fx pedals this one has build into it.

  • digitech rp1000 is within my price range. Maybe it won't sound as good, but I think it would be hard for most people to tell the difference.

  • @bluewaterkuster Ok, I haven't tried it, but I have a couple other Digitech pedals that are really good. Good luck!

  • Sounds great only it is too expensive.

  • @bluewaterkuster @bluewaterkuster Thanks. Well, you shouldn't compare it to a $200 Pod, for instance, the Axe-Fx is in a different league. I'd rather compare it to a good tube amp, let's say a Mesa/Boogie Lonestar 2X12 , it cost the same as the Axe-Fx. It has two channels and reverb. The Axe-Fx can sound like a Mesa, Fender, Marshall or whatever (60 different amp models), plus it has all tons of great effects worth thousands if bought separately. So in that way, it's not expensive at all..

  • AMAZING videos! Finally demos that are musical and not overly processed hi-gain sounds. A few questions I have for you, as I am thinking about getting a Fractal Axe Fx Ultra.

    1) After having owned the Fractal, what are the + and - according to your use? 2) Could you tell me about the fan noise, I heard it was significant 3) The sounds you use in these videos: are they tweaked or are they mostly existing patches? 4) How userfriendly is the unit? Thanks a lot!!!!

  • I run compression all the time, but that's a matter of taste. If you are not used to it, you probably don't like it. But almost everything you here on any recording/CD is compressed.

  • A very nice demo of the AxeFX. Good mix of clean and dirty tones. But I love 6:29: BOING BOING BOING BOING (waggling string).

  • @aliensporebomb ;-) Thanks!

  • A very nice demo of the AxeFX. Good mix of clean and dirty tones. But I love 6:29: BOING BOING BOING BOING (waggling string).

  • Excuse me I meant I'm digging every last one of these tones!* haha

  • I boy do I hope I get a job this summer as I can't afford this I am only 15 :(. Thanks for the great overviews of this beautiful Processor. Would you mind letting me in on the chain of hardware you are using? Guitar>Axe>Audio Interface>Computer? Because I'm digging this tone!

  • Thanks! My setup is Guitar>Axe-Fx>Mixer (Behringer UB1204)>Echo Mia PCI audiocard/interface installed in computer. And I use Cubase SX software for recording.

  • Thanks man, this thing sounds amazingly great (just like your playing) direct.

  • Sounds overly compressed

  • Almost everything does after it's uploaded to youtube.. Unfortunately youtube does bad things to the original audio quality, I guess we all know that, so I guess youtube isn't really such a good place for sound demos..

  • @rednebb Well.. Youtube does compress the clips - but not this much. There are plenty of clips that don't sound overly compressed (Fender's clips for example.)

Usually this high compression only occurs if you're recording audio through a bad video camera's mic or if you're using too much digital modeling or if you're running through a compressor or too many buffered pedals

  • @skurtix Ok, that's your opinion then.. The audio recording was done direct from the Axe-Fx Ultra's outputs through a mixer and into Cubase on my computer (No video camera mics or anything..) I used no extra compressor or pedals of any kind, nor did I use any effects or compression in Cubase, only level adjustment.

  • @rednebb I've heard digital stuff compress the sound a bit due to digital circuits inherently requiring the signal to be buffered - but it shouldn't be this much

Maybe you were using a high-gain preset? Alot of high-gain / metal-oriented amplifiers have alot of compression even without pedals and I assume the digital models would mimic that aspect aswell?

  • lead boots, go man go!!!

  • 7:22 says enough

  • thanks for reviewing this piece of gear. awesome playing. nailed ALL of the samples. truly well done!

  • Thanks!

  • he mean : "exelent man , i always watch you i love the sound of your guitars , congratulations from argentina master (he mean you are the master) , upload some more videos ."

  • exelente pelado siempre te veo me encanta como suenan las violas . te felicito desde argentina maestro, baja mas videos. saludos.

  • I wish I could understand that..

  • He said "excelent playing as always, I see. I love violas (which I assume is Argentinean dialect for guitars). Congratulations from (an) Argentinean teacher."

  • @rednebb Babelfish says: "bare exelente always I see you enchants to me as they sound the violas. I congratulate from Argentinean masterful, low but videos to you. greetings." It always loses something in translation though.

  • Ok, thanks for the translation!

  • lazy!!! sounds damn close man

  • great tones and great playing!

  • Like Boss GT 10 and Line 6 POD XT .... but is more expensive

  • ..And a lot better.. ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • @GuitarManRivera Except it slaughters those. Otherwise it's just like it. Except for the slaughtering part.

  • I bet the week I buy an Axe FX Ultra they will release the Axe FX Ultra Ultra lol.

  • ;-)

  • very cool demo

  • gilmour tone is so similar wow

  • Yeah, thanks, and those are the Axe-Fx's factory presets
