My appreciation of NBA 2K the Dreamcast is kind of extra-substantial as I bought it in 1999, but actually played it the first time abt. ten years later when I could re-arrange my DC setup. It was a gratifying moment ... -- and it still is whenever I pop it into the console.
Special thanks for looking back to the predecessor on the Saturn, I wasn't aware of its status to be the legit *forefather*. Will grab that someday, too!
Man, I remember seeing the 2k Sports games back in '99 and being absolutely blown away. Never been that much into sports games at all, but I played these on the store displays and they just made me want a Dreamcast even more! Probably my favorite console, next to the Genesis.
The only basket ball game i care for is NBA Jam but i have to say i really enjoyed this video very informative and interesting,i was upset it ended so early :)
I remember renting it when it first came out (for a ridiculous wad of cash for a 13 year old) with Sonic Adventure and Soul Caliber and just being utterly blown away.
Sonic Adventure is still my favourite Sonic game (everything since has been balls, even SA2 was a huge disappointment to me).
What really sets the console apart is games like NBA 2K, that are of genres I don't normally care about that can still entertain for hours at a time 13 years later.
@Quimbyrbg If I had to pick just one console, I would most likely pick the Dreamcast. And I can't believe I didn't say Soul Calibur! I was trying to think of launch titles I had, and somehow that one escaped me. lol
And Sonic Adventure 2 looked incredible, but too bad the gameplay didn't live up to the graphics. At least for me. Just kind of inconsistent.
Nice comparing with the Saturn game! And some games still looks fine to me now, and most games are still worth playing! My DC is still hooked onto the living room TV!
Cool info about NBA Action 98. I never would have given that game a second thought, but now I'm going to keep my eyes open for it. I really enjoy tracing back the lineage of a long running game series or developer to see where the ideas got their start. Thanks for making the video!
@cityside75 Thanks for watching! Visual Concepts also made NBA Fastbreak 98 on the PlayStation. I don't have that one, but from the looks of it, it seems quite similar to NBA Action 98.
I am not a huge fan of sports titles. But......the 2k series (NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB on the DC) are still games that I play and enjoy. They are just down right fun...and have aged pretty well considering the age of the console.
@BigDaddyDarth I remember when NHL 2K2 came out...too bad that it was the last officially released game here, but what a great game! I used to love watching the replays of a shot on goal, just to see how well the puck reacted and moved.
This game was so exciting to me as a young basketball fan. I'd never experienced realism like this in a game before. I'm personally of the opinion that the more frames of animation you add to an action post input, the less responsive the game becomes, so newer sports titles frustrate me a lot.
I remember the trigger controlled free throws being quite cool - you actually had to use a bit of precision control rather than just timing.
@AlbertFiskpinne Oh, I believe you. :) I checked out some info on the game, looks great. Don't know if I will get the PS1 or N64 version. Probably whichever I come across first I guess.
anything dc is good

@phreakindee Oh yeah, the Dreamcast in 1999...that was a good time. For some reason NFL 2K didn't wow me as much as NBA 2K. Which wowed me. A lot.

@darrenwalshsock Actually, the video went longer than I'd wanted. I just can't be succinct. lol And NBA Jam is great, I have the Jaguar version.

@thejoyofsticks Yep, the free throw system was a good use of the analog triggers!
