This is a fabulous transcription, Jim, and an excellent performance. I don't get goosebumps often, but you provided a fabulous backdrop for doing so. Not only does this capture the title of the tune but also it captures the essence of James P. Johnson's musical style. Fabulous posting - highly recommended.
Undoubtedly the two were aware of each other's music. Johnson(b.1891) was four years older than Confrey. Both had classical training. Confrey directed his musicianship to some concertizing, but is more well known for his "novelty" piano compositions and method books. Johnson developed his music in the heart of Harlem stride/shout piano, one of the earliest and most difficult jazz styles. Both cut many piano rolls and recordings, but their musical styles, despite similarities, were worlds apart.
I had never even heard of Mr Hession before I attended this very gig on the WWOZ Piano Night. A masterful performer.

The last 2 minutes sound very much like the style of the great "Zez Confrey," I wonder if James P. Johnson ever heard Zez play? Or vice versa?
