  • I am a scratch golfer and I've had a few issues with hitting the ball too high. I watched this video and kept hitting 50 percent shots like you described here and it dropped my shots much lower and now I'm able to control my ball patch much easier this way. I still have a problem trying to fade trying to do this unless I open the face on impact or delay my release. If I come across the line or over the top rather to pull or fade I just snap hook it. How can you get clean compression and fade?

  • @TheEpiceon Great question! See my "working the ball part 1, 2 and 3" and you will understand better; you still want to be behind the ball with the fade but be very aware of the low point in the swing! See also "Awareness to low point in the swing"; All the best! Shawn

PS, don't be shy about talking about this on my forum; we have some terrific seasoned guys to help you out!

  • @TheEpiceon if you were a scratch golfer you wouldnt be looking at these type lessons.

  • Hi Shawn, do you have any drill/tip on how to keep the head behing the ball? The problem you described in this video it's exactly what happened to me after reading the golfing machine and other related books and videos, so i became obsessed with hitting down on the ball but with very poor results especially with long irons. When i consciously try to keep my head behind I dont seem to able to do it enough. Thanks for the great videos, your passion for teaching the game is inspirational to me. Fr

  • Shawn, Some swings seem like they start by a pulling down action on the club right through to the hit. Almost like they are pulling down on the club and scooping up the ball. Other swings look like they start by the arms barely falling and the upper body just rotating as you can see in the Cabrera post on your site. With the driver he seems to have very little drop of the arms and just rotates his body.

    Still Confused

  • Shawn,

I have couple questions. Are you using the squating action to bring the arms down faster or just for supporting the upper body and arms swinging?

When you let the arms come down and swing is it like a pulling action on the club or is it more like using the upper body to swing the arms through the ball?

  • @wardn53 You are on the right track Neal! You should pose these questions on my forum and enjoy the responses from our very enthusiastic and polite WIG'ers (Wisdom in Golfers) as we call ourselves; the answer is all of the above but it is not your job to think about it; yes, it is important to understand though. See "hitting the ball is not your job; part 1 and 2; shawn clement" ; Shawn

  • Sounds like were not listening to the GURU PEOPLE!!!!

  • @clemshaw

I've been watching your videos for about a year now and I love the great information. I was wondering if you were ever going to do a video on how to transfer your swing from the golf mats to actual grass because with my wedges ans short irons i can hit it all over the flag with your swing methods and when i get on the course i hit it fat more than I would like. any help would be great.

  • @buc85strong When you are on the course, you are trying to avoid a fat shot right? So your focus would be on the contact with the ball in that case right? THAT IS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!! :) Your focus should be on the action of the swing to the target and KNOWING THAT IF YOU DO RELEASE TO THE TARGET that the ball and ground in front of it is in the way; see "pure strike part 1 and 2; shawn clement" and "ridiculously easy part 1 and 2; shawn clement"

  • love what you said about being the exact opposite...just about everything in golf is the opposite of what you think...especially to the beginner players....but like Gary Player said...if you hit down on the golf ball it goes up and if you hit up it goes down...golf is a funny game

  • If the club hits the ball in a desending blow, won't it force the ball down and 'trap' it against the ground? a little bit?

  • @gregrutz Just go to some videos on the subject of slow motion impact or Konica Minolta Biz Hub cameras for golf and see for yourself! Shawn

  • Love the videos great job. Sean I'm just curious what your handicap index is?

  • @Esoxfan Right hand is 0 and left hand is 0; they should go to plus 2 this year; Shawn

  • @clemshaw

Hi Shown, driving range just opened and I tried your swing - and to deloft. One fat shot from hitting the ball and some thin one, but mostly solid contact and very much to the target. I am not easily impressed, but this seems to work. Thank you very much for sharing

  • @LeinonenHannu Make sure you see my "ridiculously easy; shawn clement" part 1 and 2; so that you understand why it works and why you want to stick to it and polish it; Shawn

  • Hey Shawn. My english is very bad so i know you speak a very good french.

  • haha 1:50 reminds me of ben hogan. "think of everything you're supposed to do in the golf swing and do the exact opposite. you'll probably come close to making a perfect swing."

  • Shawn,

I noticed my driver swing trajectory was starting to get very high. I turn to my Shawn Clement video subscription on YouTube and sure enough here is the answer! It's like you can read my mind. Thank you for another great video instruction! Another question, I have a tendency to cup my left wrist a little in my back swing. Should I try and focus on keeping it straight or adjust my grip to compensate so the club face is not open?

  • @jmwatson64 The key here to that left wrist not breaking down is to feel that BOTH WRISTS ARE HINGING TOGETHER on their respective anatomical snuff boxes; you will see this in my "proper grip; shawn clement", "loaded arms, shawn clement", "grip 2 wrist hinge; shawn clement" and "grip and swing awareness; shawn clement"; Thank you for the kind words and keep pluggin'! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

Got a question for you. I'm still having problems getting good contact on the ball and thinking about going back to basics with my swing and rebuild from the ground up.

I suspect my grip is one of the culprits as my left hand does creep over onto the top of my grip. So once my grip is ok is it better to start with chipping then progressively increase the length of the back swing to a full swing? Is this a good idea or what practice routine would you suggest?

    Cheers Craig

  • @parttroll1 Good way to go! As long as you start with my short game approach as the takeaway of the swing is the backswing of the chip shot; see "short game chipping; shawn clement"; "How to feel the short swing; shawn clement", "Chip yips; shawn clement" and "Chip and hip turn update; shawn clement" THEN go to "arms and body timing..." and "Stop Crashing..." and you will be on your way! If you really don't want to miss anything else, get my DVD!!

  • Shawn...that was one of the best explanations I've seen you do on keeping the head steady and BEHIND the ball. This steady spine angle and head changed me forever in my swing. Awesome stuff my friend!! LOVE IT! and let me say again....Thank you for all you do.....

    Michael10659

  • @EquipDealer1 Shawn's head is not very steady. He pumps up and down and head moves up and down, too.

(And that's the way he does it. Not a fixed ... steady head :-)

  • @LeinonenHannu ok...wrong terminology...my bad.

  • @EquipDealer1 Thanks Michael! I am glad! Shawn

  • Shawn,

Do you "turn down" your left hand thru impact or let the strong grip square the clubface, and should all we focus on is keeping the hands ahead "thru the ball?" Also how does right index finger pressure relate to this? Thanks.

  • @jlnewma7 The first videos you need to see are the "ridiculously easy part 1 and part 2; shawn clement" and then have a look at the "pure strike part 1 and 2; shawn clement"; this will answer your questions in a big way! Also, for more support, please come visit and register on my forum and ask your questions there as well! :)
