Great, I'm glad all these rich celebrities think science is cool, but they are still the ones making millions on entertainment. So why don't they put their money where their mouth is? I'd love to see Justin Dumbshit say he's donating all his money to the educational system so we can have more scientists. No, this is just a promotional video with a bunch of assholes that think "science is cool...I'm a nerd!" Go spend 10 of the hardest years of your life studying math and science, then talk.
@silentknight - More times than not, a great product doesn't sell itself. It needs to be marketed so people understand what makes it a great product.
The endorsement of FIRST by celebrities doesn't make FIRST a great organization. The endorsement of FIRST by celebrities brings the messages to the masses that FIRST is a great organization.
@3akoscielski Haha well you never know :) a massive malfunction always happens to our team during the competition at a critical time so who knows whose is really going to end up being better xD besides, it's fun regardless of the 'better robot'
One of my idols growing up (and still is) Neil deGrasse Tyson, not snoop dogg! I find it hilarious that they think shallow entrainment celebrities like Justin Bieber will get kids interested in science. Give me Neil deGrasses, Bill Nye, Carl Sagan, the Magic School Bus, anything but these jokers.
I bet they paid these musician more to talk about engineering than a real fucking engineer... LOL if you can figure out that engineering is the shit than you shouldn't be studying it.... We don't need these guys to tell us how cool engineering is
Not everybody has patients & even the will to be an engineer! There is a reason why engineering students have a very high drop out rate (not as high as MD school but its high). Take it from someone who graduated double majoring in Flight Operator (instrument rating) & Flight management to later can't find a job because of the economy. Later decides to go back for major in aviation engineer out his on pocket. Engineering is hard but rewarding
They think science is cool because scientists make cool toys for them to play with using a kind of self-discpline which celebrities are incapable of. Hence, celebtrities try desperately to encourage scientists in order to avoid the pain of actual hard work.
"Wassup everybody at US fresh robotics, I'm Justin Bieber and I think that what you guys do is just as cool as what we do in music".. Listen little girl, scientists 1) don't need your approval, thanks a bunch, 2) music? Is that what you call what you do? Really? And nice JT- "robotics and sciences- that's the future!" Astute observation chap. WTF is wrong with a society that needs pointless celebrity figureheads like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus to advocate "Science is cool"? Goddamit America
@silentknight92 First off, Justin Bieber was saying, you don't have to be into music or singing to be cool. He is saying science and scientists are cool too. He is appreciating the amazing stuff people have created, through science. Like, phones, computers, iPods, and all that stuff. He wasn't giving you approval like you think. Him and all these celebrities are saying science is cool, no matter what. Get it through your head. Mkay? Bye!
@Brooooh I understand the point of the video, I'm just questioning the integrity of a civilization that requires such vapid figureheads to endorse important issues. Though celebrity advertising is prominent on a global level (to a certain extent) you won't find the same sense of celebrity-worship anywhere but America (at least I haven't come in contact with a similar societal situation). It's ridiculous: respecting science and scientists should be an integral aspect of any culture.
@Brooooh Also, limiting the applications of science to such material items as "phones, computers, iPods, and all that stuff" is a major damper on the ethos of your argument. Science allows for medicine- the reason the average life expectancy has risen to unprecedented levels relative to the past, and will continue to rise; it allows for global travel, an increase in sanitation, entertainment- hell, science is the whole reason we're arguing right now. It shouldn't need Bieber to say "it's cool"-
@Brooooh it should be recognized as cool inherently. And actually, you just said yourself- "Him and all these celebrities are saying science is cool, no matter what." That, by definition, is a showing of approval. TL;DR: Science should be appreciated without celebrities saying it should be.
@silentknight92 Well, I understand where you're point of view is coming from too. But I'm saying kids still in middle school and high school, like me, that admire these celebrities. And at least one of them are our role models. And a lot of the time when it comes to our role models and they say something is cool, like science, We'll most likely give it a try, and maybe like it. Other than us getting bored in class and getting annoyed with a teacher, we can look at it a different way and like it.
@Brooooh you're still missing the point. I understand why these endorsements are a good idea- and in reality, they may work. But why do they have to tell you? Why can't you realize that science is amazing? Because only "geeks" try hard at school? "Geeks and nerds are the coolest people on the planet"- why do you call them something that has a negative connotation then? Why can't someone who tries to succeed in academics be respected for that? We worship the jock, the player- those who
@silentknight92 Because someone people won't give it a try. It's a strange world. And people are rude, and call people "Geeks" and "Nerds". And they will never think to themselves that they want to be a scientist or have something to do with science. But when they really listen to somebody, it usually is them listening to their role model. And that's when they realize that they want to do something with science.
@Brooooh are talented in sports, those who succeed socially. Good at chess? You get laughed at. Being amazing at computer programming? Chemistry? Physics? Mathematics? Look at how the members of the Robotics Club at a local school get treated. Look how much funding is put into the Robotics Club versus the amount that's invested in ONE sport. You get no social recognition for intelligence or having an affinity for the scientific arts. And that's my point- fuck this screwy system.
@silentknight92 I don't mean to come off as rude, because I honestly see where you're coming from. My team was at FIRST nationals in St. Louis this past year, so I really do feel passionately about the subject. That being said, I disagree with you. The point of having celebrities is not to "give us approval". It allows the FIRST message to spread to all reaches of life. Some young kid who is ignorant about the subject sees JB or MC talking about it, and suddenly feels inspired to know more.
@ontheride9 Oh you don't come off as rude, no worries. And I understand that celebrity endorsements are pretty much mandatory in the US. It's ideologically upsetting. I don't like Justin Timberlake, Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and think that they don't really know what they're talking about. I think a lot of the celebrity endorsements of science in this video were faked and ridiculous. If they had asked Natalie Portman, who is a Harvard graduate and fluent in 5 languages, or Lisa Kudrow,
@ontheride9 who worked in the medical field for 8 years before her debut as an actor, then I'd be less hesitant to say "goddammit America". I can guarantee that those celebrities wouldn't have simply said "Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen" and patted themselves on the back for being knowing three of the most basic elements of the periodic table. And besides faking intelligence, we get to learn about their back up careers- kids would think "I could be what Phoebe wanted to be- a doctor!" etc
@silentknight92 Ah, yes. I see what you mean. I do agree that the interviews are kind of sad... I don't think half these people know what half of those words mean... hahaha. The only one I would defend would be Will.I.Am I guess. He might not be completely educated about the topic, but he's making a sincere effort to get involved. Miley and JB are just mocking it by trying to pretend they're involved..
@ontheride9 yeah Will I Am seems pretty cool. I'm a bit biased though; his opening about science being used to figure out how the piano works reeled me in pretty well.
@silentknight92 THAT is the goal of FIRST. To foster a community of people who want to work together to improve our world through science and technology. If having celebrities advocate for us helps get that message across to people who wouldn't have previously been interested, I'm all for it!
ha lol my science teacher showed this to our class today! nd wen i saww Justin Bieber i was likee AAAHHHH I LOVE JB!!! But wen i saw Miley Cyrus's face i was like EEEWWW THT HOE!:)
While I love this video and the great light it shines on FIRST and science/math in general, I was sad to see that the only scientists (and all but one of the celebrities) highlighted were male. Where are all the women who have changed the world? and where are all the female celebrities supporting STEM? It would have been easy to put in a picture of Rosalind Franklin, Marie Currie or highlight a female FIRST team!
@MrAzatutiun - I agree. I'm kinda surprised that I can't find it to be downloaded anywhere. FIRST, can you release this track? Would love to use it for our own FRC team.
