I love this record; one of my all-time favorites. I STILL have my original copy; it's over nine years old. It's raw, real, and brutal. Others may disown it, but I think it speaks to their character that they were still "finding their way". "In The End", they'll have their "One Little Victory". That's simply "How it is; how it's going to be".

One of their strongest albums;........I was bummed out that none of it was played on the Time Machine Tour..One Little Victory has one of the freakiest guitar solos ever played and Earthshine should be played at every show;........I would rank Trails as on of their top 4 albums.
Some of Rush's best lyrics and concepts are on this album. Vapour trails and earthshine are very amazing tracks, and if you don't get a sense of sorrow from them, you might be hearing, but not listening.
by maintaining a sort of "grace under pressure," and by acknowledging change, time, and possibility..the band deserves a timeless respect as they continue producing music. each album, and especially VAPOR TRAILS has such an honest sound-a genuine surrender of self to the music (a kind of 'we are all the same, even though we're different' kinda thing). to say it is "rough and nasty,"well, not only is that insensitive, but it's a comment attacking the emotional quality of song....
Rush has made the successful transition, as a band, from one decade to the next since the late 60's.Relating to the "Working Man,"talked of Kingdoms &great heroes,&brought pieces of history to life through music. It [life] becomes 'Closer To The Heart' and it was evident in their "Farewell To Kings."Rush brings forth a sense of nostalgia,ALL songs distinguished by a natural/cosmic correlation, abandoning the trivial matters-to adopt greater and more wondrous aspects of the universe...so...
I put off getting this album for a long time because of the "noisy" reviews, but I finally gave in. Aside from the clipping it's actually very good. Very different for Rush, but that's cool because they keep reinventing their sound. Looking forward to Clockwork Angels!
As far as I know, the band basically recorded the album raw on a Mac laptop. I think that's great! That's why the album sounds so raw and the "quality" is a little rough. But I'd rather have it rough than to have it sound like all of the other overprocessed studio crap out there. It's rock music, it should be raw and real. Not sounding like Electric light orchestra! (nothing against them, I love that band but they are way too clear and clean sounding)
Toughest rush record to make ever...according to Geddy.I think Rush don't like being in the studio too much, after over 30 yrs of it.To me this record is a bit like Counterparts, half an album,a bit uncommitted and a warm up for the next better one..imo.Wish they would have filmed the making of it
u can't hate rush but u can't love the lack of preparation that went into the songs. ex. track 1 is great, but alas, too long.... the last part would be best saved for a live version. AND. track 2 kinda sounds like something original and the rest of the album falters and falls down again. who's ever heard of 'vapor trails track7' but u have heard of permanent waves track 6.
I agree completely with your disdain for digital limiters and their use in brickwalling sound.
Yet I must say I think it was inevitable.
Loud electronic instruments + loud drums + the human voice -- all heard clearly -- is simply unnatural. I mean, when I throw an old PZM in front of my acoustic trio during rehearsals, it sounds naturally well-blended.
Geddy Looks like Chalres Hawtrey..if you don;t know who that is - google him and select images....(a great bass player though.... - I mean Geddy Lee NOT Charles Hawtrey)
I believe what happened with this album was what seems to have happened to Rush's albums gradually over time, and also in the industry in general.
The culprit is forms of compression and brick-wall limiting. Do this: run Nocturne, for example, as a file into an audio editor where you can see the waveform...those flat bits at the top of the peaks are the limiter being overused and destroying dynamics and harmonics. Limiter overuse, and pitch correctors, are going to ruin modern music.
I've gained a new respect for Neil, not just as a drummer, not just as a lyricist but a major trooper!! To come back from such a horrible time in life!!! Not everybody can pull that off!!!!..
Completely unlike any Rush album. The lyrics show that it must be a very personal record for Neil. The songs themselves are mediocre at best, however, placed in sequential order they create a good concept album. I found out that it's meant to be listened to in its entirety.
@captinjingles Check out my channel to see what 'One Little Victory' and 'Earthshine' sound like remixed (remastered.) Its what the rest of the album will sound like remastered when it comes out. Richard Chycki was invited again to do the remixes after doing the R30 remixes. It was remixed so well and so well percieved that its going to get a total remaster treatment. The remaster will come out later this year or early next.
I think the key comment here is Geddy was "tearing his hair out" and telling Al that it sounded terrible and Al was dismissive of that analysis. He was listening to it on a walkman and yes, the music is great - I love many of the songs on VT... But apparently he should have been listening on something more hi-fi. Maybe the weaknesses in the mix and production would have been more evident.
But you know, like they said, they spent a LONG time on it and it is hard to distance oneself from it.
Thank god they put in the time. Its a masterpiece. That said, there is definitely something missing in the mix. I found the higher end audio system you listen on, the better it sounds. Recently I read that they are considering remixing the entire cd for re-release. That would be awesome!
i really think the music is over analyzed and over thunk. just play from the heart and soul and the real people will respond it is not as complex as people think

that is the truth! the people that say it sucks are the same people that run the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

Too bad the mastering engineer couldn't understand the difference between his compression filter and the "automatic make it awesome button"
Great music... CD sounds like *shit.* Look up "loudness war" on youtube and find out what record labels are doing that's destroying music.

I wish they would have kept the musical style from VT and continue to expound on it. Although Snakes is a fresh renovation of the VT style.
