    My sister and i lost our mum nearly 2 years ago she was a cook all her life, and enjoyed it so much she continued working until she was 78 in an old peoples home. She took great pleasure in seeing them enjoy their food.

    She always made mince pies for us and for our sick neighbour.

    I have never cooked mince pies before and being a rufty tufty welder i never had a need to. I will be making some as soon as i gather the ingredients and make my own pastry on the second attempt.

  • @autoclus Hello there, your mum must have been a wonderful lady to carry on working for so long, I have to admit it is very rewarding to cook for the elderly, especially the ones with dementia, they are very special.

    Go for it, the pastry is well worth mastering and you can warm these pies up for a few secs in the microwave if you like, without the pastry going soggy, and they keep for weeks in a tin. Have a lovely Christmas!

  • @baudsofkellas Hello there! Thanks for watching, I have never made my own mincemeat but I might have a go now you mention it, I'm sure it's nicer than bought stuff. I hope your kids enjoy the mince pies and you all have a wonderful Christmas :-) Sylvia

  • Thanks Silvia for this great recipe. I'll try and make these for Christmas. It's remarkable how the pastry can be re-worked so many times. That's there's little or no waste at all is probably testimony to how old this recipe is when such things mattered a great deal (and still should) One question - would this recipe work with another type of spirit say Brandy for instance?

  • Hello there, yes I don't see why not, you can't taste the rum in the pastry so it must be there to help it keep. It's worth a try I would say.
