@sparklechopz . He was Born in Brixton, South London, He is a Cockney lad, One of us, How else, Do you expect him to talk, You not one of them Accent Nazi police are you ?
It could never be as good without Mick,Woody and Trevor. It just doesn't capture the same limitlessness. Some people you just can't replace and Mick Ronson is one of those people.I will always love Mick Ronsons unmatcheable ability.
A fantastic song, but this is not a seminal reading of this song. Some are best kept frozen in time, and this is best performed by a mid-twenties Bowie.
The arrangement doesn’t work, and is mildly embarrassing. I think that is Reeves Gabrels on guitar and he does a poor job on lead, neither capturing the spirit of a Mick Ronson, nor the credibility of an Earl Slick.
I like Ziggy and the other personas but in all honesty, I like David Bowie as Bowie the most. As he got older he garnered finesse which is why his vocals don't suit his former songs as much. He used to be much more nasal sounding :D
If I Had A Choice of 1969-1980 Bowie and 1983-2004, Of course, I'd Choose the Latter, because, I Think the guitar isn't as good, Bowie doesn't sound the same, and most of his good song are gone, and how it sounds overall. I Like some of the performances, but nothing beats Major Tom, Ziggy, Halloween Jack and The Thin White Duke.
Lol 4:00 ! David you cheeky sod! I love him so much :D David has the perfect balance of male and female, which is the secret to irresistable sex appeal!
I think this is the third time I've seen a video where a fan goes running on stage. The first was in Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars a guy hugged him, then when he was with Tina Turner singing Tonight a fan kissed him. I like how he just kind of let's it happen and doesn't make a huge fuss about it. :) Doesn't freak out! :D
interesting period for Bowie....I was a huge fan of his in the 70s/80s....after seeing the SM tour in 83.....listend to the 70s collection for yrs......I was sort of turned off after the 90 GH tour which I saw 3 nights in a row and was sort of bored. and Tin MAch did not do much for me....
So like a FOOL I did not see him in 95 or 97.......and it was yrs later in '00s when I stated to collect boots and vids..and saw he KILLED it in 95!
late 80s was just a weak prd for classic rock i guess.
I saw this performance on VH-1 back in 1997. I wish the poster linked the entire Bowie performance though. The band was super hot that night. Reeves is a genius, on I'm afraid of Americans his solo was amazing. I still have it on VHS lol lol lol
Was anyone else kind of annoyed with the girls right at the front? The way they were just staring up at him all dreamy-eyed (not that I blame them for that...) but the fact that they weren't even singing along or going totally crazy to be that close up? If it was me, I would have been belting out the song along with him! It's an amazing song!
well, he´s married with a woman from somalia. His "first officer" from 1995 to 2003 was a black lesbian. "Bowie" is another word for alienation.
Yes, there was e short, mad, depressive period of fascination with very bad ideas. But then listen to the Berlin triptych ... If you call someone a racist who has worked his life long wiht people from all over the world, someone who doesn´t care about sex and gender at all ... you really missed the point.
Interesting thing I noticed--in the original he says "I'm a space invader", in this one he says "I WAS the space invader*. I could be overanalyzing this but I see that subtle change in lyrics his way of commenting how he's moved passed Ziggy/Ziggy's death. Or maybe he just forgot the words, I dunno lol.
Not bad, but woulda been oh so fuckin mujch better with a different lead guitar.... this guy is tryin to be slash...try .maybe an older cat who can get the mick ronson sound and effects....shredding doth not a guitarist make !!! Or: "you can't re- invent the ronson"
I don't agree with you. GR has had an extra 25 years to learn the song. MR was much more charismatic and put more emotion into his playing. DB is still a great showman but his voice is struggling on this song.
@glamfakir I understand you. And this guy is not the best guitarist Bowie worked with. Earl Slick is the best he had, and then we have ronson. It's just that this Bowie-phase, were it's more jungle and drumm and base is better.
David Bowie is the greatest thing in the world since Oxygen. I need him to live. If he died, I would die as well. Uncle Fester, you are a guitar god. My wife had the band play Absolute Beginners as she walked down the aisle at my wedding and I cried like a baby. I LOVE YOU BOWIE!!!
@jimmytangosids Yeah I always dread the day Bowie dies. I will be such an emotional wreck. It'll be just as bad as the day my sister was killed in '96. I don't know what I'll do. And I'm getting married soon and I want a Bowie song played. I was thinking the wedding song by Bowie. The one without the lyrics. It's a hard decision though.
This was the final encore....ironically, radio city was half empty because they were filming the gq awards before the concert and the half-hearted were long gone.
Having fat-boy jump on stage in the middle of this song is like having your mom asking for you on your answering machine while you're having sex. Sure you're in a good place and you're going to finish, but somehow the edge isn't as sharp.
Did you mean when he said "moonage daydream"? It sounded to me like he was expecting some back up vocals to sing that part......but I do know good singers drop an octave for a word or phrase to conserve for a bigger part.
Well, I think that's because we'll always miss Ronno and Ziggy together, they were a great duet! But this version isn't to bad, I think.
Same thing happens when you listen the 74's David Live at the Tower Philadelphia version; being even a very cool version with Earl Slick, we do always miss Ronno, don't we?
@gav240z ...right- I hate when the classic rockers take on some young turk tryin to be slash, or frusciante...it ruins the mix.... fogerty does this too!! some of us odl farts remember the ziggy days!
@gav240z same here, I can't explain why I love him and his music so much, but I do! And I think the man is a God and when he dies, a party of angels will come for his soul and he will ascend to the Heavens and perform for the Gods for all eternity and bestow his blessings upon us loyal fans! (I'm not religious btw, was just using religious...jargon...ha)
@gav240z I feel the same way. I think one of the major differences here is that Bowie is trying to sing it as a singer. In the original he was yelling, screaming, bellowing, screeching it with real rock and roll swagger. Also the guitar lacks bite in this version.

I don't go for recordings of live music much.
Guitar solos leave me cold.
