She looks scary, in all the possible ways, and doesn't even manage to make up for it by playing really well... One of the worse versions of this piece sadly...
this is very nice, VERY technical . may be a 9 minute work but takes years of practice to play. i admit she's kinda scary but its how she plays and i respect it even if it is kind of awkward.
In the central movement he reworks the agitated theme from the intro in the LH and calms it down with the theme from an old Italian song... also reflecting both the romance and the agitation in the Italian character... it is superbly done and is supposed to paint a vivid memoir of his Italian travels.
I've done my research. Liszt's music often interweaves passing scenes from his inner and outer life, and he was known to take several themes and fuse them together. Venezia e Napoli means "Venice and Naples" - the score of this suite is full of themes of songs of old Italian Gondoliers and the Venice waterways.
She's kinda scary. Or is it the piano? Yeah, fiery tech... but so what, this piece is supposed to evoke a spider, all delicate webs and movement - and a Gondola on a Milanese waterway - all rolled into one. Where's the delight?
The tarantella isn't meant to evoke spiders or gondolas. It comes from an Italian wives' tale that says if you're bitten by a poisonous spider, you can save your life by dancing the venom out of your blood. Do your research. ; )
Its true the Tarantella is an Italian dance, but whether it is "curative or symptomatic" is disputed. Some say the frenzy is triggered by spider bite - it was considered that the dancer's soul was possessed by a spider. Wikipedia also has a good article for more info.
Technically, she obviously plays the piece appropriately. However, her amazingly violent and brash approach makes it simply not enjoyable to listen to. This is very sad, because it is an incredibly beautiful piece. She does get better to some extent during parts of the canzona napoletana (second half of the song), but the performance as a whole is disappointing at best.
Before I watched the video, I thought maybe it's the quality of the video. But I agree with you completely, her techniques are great but her tone is terrible. I guess she hasn't exploit the difference between giving the piece a little bit of "push" and purely hysterical pounding.
I think one of the punishments in hell is to macroanalyze this piece... you know, Roman Numerals and what not. Torture! Just hearing it is much better!
Some of you should be ashamed. Of course, music is highly subjective and all of us have our own taste. But when something is clearly good, whenever it suites your taste at least try not to spit on it. You should post your interpretation and show to the rest of us how do you think it should be played.
beautiful performance but the best is Berezovsky. He plays this tarantella so naturally. His sound and his tecnique are perfect! this sound and this tecnqique "only" good, very good! however this performance is fantastic too!
This piano doesn't sound even Close to being in tune. It has a horrible sound in fact...everything is sour...it sounds more like a toy piano than a Concert Grand. Her agressive playing could have knocked it out if she practiced awhile before the performance but even so the Pins should have been SET better than this. It sounded like it was around 439. YIKES. As to the playing it seemed more an assault on the music than playing it.
She looks like she's...murdering that poor piano. She plays as though she's a machine and she has hammers for fingers. It's rather annoying me, she makes the song harsh and bitter.
I was so happy to find out I wasn't the only one thinking this way. Could she be any more agressive??? I don't hear Venice, I don't hear Napoli, I don't hear any Tarantella...
exactly, then the secon section is a sensitive profound painting the lirism of napolitaen songs...she beats the piano like a gorilla....she doesn't undertand the sense of this music
Depends on your ability, but I can play the introduction section without too much hassle, though I only play as a hobby. I don't particularly like the rest of the piece, so I will never probably bother, but I know it would take some real work.
She plays it too quickly anyway in my opinion. Leslie Howard is probably the better choice for interpretive comparison.
It requires such an advanced degree of mastery to do that. She obviously practiced hard for it and sacrificed a lot of time. Incredible speed. Such a wonderful performance!!! Excellent job. I listened to this so many times.
okay... when she came in she looked normal... but then she got weirder and weirder and i am kinda afraid of her ^^ what age is she?? does anyone know?
You are really invidious! It's dream for you like for a lot playing so good! pobrecito! For this perhaps you will need a traslation like a dream for playing like this women! ahahh
Unfortunately, her middle section sounds like a "smushed canoli". Far too bravura-you have to almost picture a little old italian man relaxing while puffing on his little cigar just watching people go by.Left no room for contrast to the opening.
Better performance than previous ones, but I'm not seeing much feeling in some major expressive parts. Your hands look extremely clenched in some larger chords as well. Keeping a relaxed hand will help with endurance when encountering a difficult, faster portion of the song...
believe she's not... it's not bad at all but could be better... sound is a bit aggressive, not enough rubato, she seems to rush... but hey, i'm not as good as her though... i'm a good musician but don't have such control of my hands like her, so the bottom line is congratulations anyway :)
Hmmm... This requires brilliant piano playing skills. Typical Liszt. When i compare this to Chopin's Tarantella, somehow Chopin keeps the interest on better. Much shorter a piece it is too. A small master piece really, not the most played or well known Chopin, i suppose. In general, Liszt took (or composed in most cases) a fairly short melodic theme, and made variations out of it. Chopin composed long, long melodic lines. Just my opinion. Both composers were genious, of course.
Sinneo91, I seriously hope you're not implying the piece's technical aspect oversahdows its musical aspect.
She might be able to play fast, but so can a lot of other people. This is so boring. There's no soul, no character, no spirit, no head, no heart. Only fingers. Liszt is rolling in his grave. He would never have married her - what a ridiculous statement.
I couldn't agree more. I heard many better performances of this piece. There are very odd ponctuations about anywhere in the pieces, like she was pummeling a big chord and stopping half a second to take a break... Not really in character, too bad...
You constantly hear people say "It needs more emotion!" If only they could see this piece. I laugh especially hard when she does the little roll at around 01:02 and makes the "Pssshhhhhh Pssshhhhh" sound with her mouth, Lol.
Personally I would take Liszt over Chopin any day. Although I like his some of Chopin's Etude's, Liszt's music is so much more inspiring I guess you could say. Which Liszt lived a longer life than Chopin by a wide margin, so you must take that into account.
Part 2: Liszt copied this technique and greatly surpassed Chopin in both technique and expression during his touring years. Liszt's interpretations of Bach, Beethoven, and even Chopin were acknowledged by the masses and top composers alike as the greatest of their time. Liszt was a showman, but Chopin once said that he wished he could play his own etudes the way Liszt could.
All that being said, I do believe that Chopin had a much greater gift for melody than Liszt.

WOW! Steroids maybe? So much power it hurts! Incredible strength and speed. Beautiful choreography. Is just me or is she actually knocking the piano out of tune?
I'm not overly enthusiastic about her interpretation here. I think it's too agressive overall, especially in the lyrical theme. There are MANY moments for sublime beauty which she overlooks in favor of frenetics. I do like that she takes risks, though. Very nice to hear that! you see that the person played it nomaly then the vid was edited to go fast and they also edited the music so it matched. Nice vid edit but bad piano!
If I've said it before, I've said it a thousand times: virtuoso or not, Lizst is shit and painful to listen to. Listening to the beauty of a Chopin or a Rachmaninoff and then listening to this screeching will make your ears bleed.
If ur gonna become a pianist, AwesomeP27, then you've sofar gotten nowhere. You need to find the beuty in every piece of music. Hey- Rachmoninov and Liszt are so much a like! They lived basicly in the same time. I bet if you heard a piece of music and thought it was by somebody other then Liszt, like Rachmoninov, and played by a great pianist, you'd like it.
You are a fucking idiot.. Liszt and Rachmaninoff were very far apart. Liszt lived in the 18th century, Rachmaninov in the 1900's way different periods too, Liszt died at the end of romanticism. Rachmaninov started the neo-classical movement after the impressionistic, and atonal movements. And, by the way, there is garbage music out there. Not everything is beautiful. Some people put out nothing but trash.
Well ... actually Liszt lived in the 19th century (1800's), not the 18th century. :-) I think Anna meant that both L. and R. were romantic composers, which is certainly true. Anyway - can we not be nasty to each other? There's really no point for that, thanks.
Hey stupid. LIZST and Rachmaninov are from different century. If you are stupid don't tell the whole world about it ok? Please, you're an embarassment!
AwesomePossum27,Liszt stupid? What a mindless statement. He was one of the greatest composer, pianist, virtuoso, teacher's in the history of music! Liszt created the greatest school of piano students in the history of music and at no charge to them! he was a friend of Chopin, sometimes(hehe),Chopin dedicated his Etudes to Liszt. The Liszt legacy lives on to this day. Liszt did much for the progression of music in his time and for all time.
Part 1: Why am I always hearing that Liszt was a better musician than Chopin? During the 1830s, Chopin showed Liszt a level of poetry at the piano no one had thought possible.
my goodness... amazing! i hope she has a few CDs out :) great Liszt playing (eventhough i thought the tempo shifts in the first few minutes were a bit over the top :) thanks for uploading! amazing, amazing playing!

If I've said it before, I've said it a thousand times: virtuoso or not, Lizst is shit and painful to listen to. Listening to the beauty of a Chopin or a Rachmaninoff and then listening to this screeching will make your ears bleed.

Learn at least to write his name correctly: LISZT.
You should read Alan Walker trilogy on Liszt before shooting such idiocies.

Wow, then what kind of music do you listen to then? Elevator music? That doesn't make you ears bleed.

Liszt did much for the progression of music in his time and for all time.

so true, what an idiot, Liszt was a good competitor of Chopin, how can he be shit? What a stuipd person he is

Liszt was a showman. Chopin was a musician. This performance is stunning, but I'd love to hear her play Chopin.

Part 1: Why am I always hearing that Liszt was a better musician than Chopin? During the 1830s, Chopin showed Liszt a level of poetry at the piano no one had thought possible.

This is the way it is supposed to be played, lively and passionate with a lot of emotion and dynamic contrast
