@demonear1 RHCP was inspired by Public Enemy, nothing wrong with that. Besides Public Enemy based the guitar rift from Dennis Coffey's - Getting it On.
@jkunblade he said "that's cool that they led RHCP fans here", he's "here because of hiphop" but "Respect" he's not saying there's anything wrong with that - quite the opposite! :)
@MrBushkilla exactly! lol it's great that other music & bands have got their fans into PE! PE are HipHop through & through but they've influenced many people outside hiphop which is testament to how great a group they were & still are in fact!
@88chuckd My name is Flavor Flav, its on my birth certificate.. Infact my full name is Flavour Big Daddy Kane EriC sermon J.V.C.F.O.R.C.E Kool Keith Flav..
I think Chuck D has always been underrated as an MC. Those first two PE albums were GREAT musically and lyrically, and although Flav was always the most popular of the group, Chuck D's voice and lyrics(especially this cut, Public Enemy No.1, and Miuzi weighs a ton) are what, in my opinion, made PE the icons they are. 'Nuff respect...
Yes, yes y'all. Apart from RUN-DMC, Grandmaster and the Furious, Sugar Hill, and perhaps The Treacherous 3... this was in fact the birth of the Dope Jam; not to be confused with DefJam (though I do like the Beasties and Slayer). While i popped this first on cassette -- my Technics turntable was shit and I couldn't affort a new diamond stylus -- the rhymes and samples still pasted my face through the Toshiba auto-reverse that I carried at the time. Miuzi, Lampin', Rightstarter. A sacred document.
Listening to this album always makes me 15 again.. Great memories, great album.
This is real RAP. This is BADASS. This does not sound like a slow distant train going by, "thunnk-a-thunnk, thunnk-a-thunnk" with somebody reading the weather forecast almost aloud, like today's lameass so-called rap artists.
Public Enemy and Run DMC will always be the only true rap groups for me. 'Nuff said, peace out y'all.
I just watched Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne on some bullshit concert on Vh1, threw up on myself and got on my computer and searched this and it was visual Pepto Bismol!
OLDSMOBILE STATION WAGON..."94 MODEL?....2 15" JL AUDIO SUB WOOFERS, 4 ALPINE 6X9" & 2 6" ALPINE 6" MID-RANGE SPEAKERS, 2 3" HIGH RANGE WITH BUILT IN TWEETERS, 2 500 WATT ALPINE AMPLIFIERS(early 90's V-12's series) 1 CROSSOVER/BY-PASS, 2 POWER REGULATERS, 2 DIE-HARD BATTERIES FROM SEARS,..IT'S WAS THE SUMMER OF 94...HEARING THIS FOR THE 1ST TIME...(tears)
Probably the best trak on the album. Also who else think the opening couple of seconds sounds like the Embasy world Snooker World Championships theme LOL
First time I saw them I never heard of them, main act was LL Cool J, en the warming up was Eric B and Rakim, I came for the last ones, but PE was a awesome bonus!
Cost me £10 on import when I copped it, a lot of money for a kid back then. I plopped it on my record player then, from this intro, the scratchy guitars and Flav's opening words I sat rooted to the spot, listening to it over and over again into the night. I was stunned by its brilliance. These mysterious people from another country had made something truly dynamic and beautiful from poverty and discrimination. I'll never forget that. Thank you Public Enemy.
@JimGoad, It's obvious that you've never lived in the NYC / NJ area. $57K ain't shit. Granted it's not poverty level, but even back in the day, it was basically paycheck to paycheck income.
I'll be honest a lot of oldskool shit sounds old. This shit still sounds fresh because it wasn't biting off of anything from the past. This wasn't copy cay shit. It was new then and its new now.
Just bouhgt this album! Such class. Sadly, there ain't been a classy new rap artist since the 90's. Bring back the passion to the music, let's get rid of this commercialism that is surrounding us.
This was awesome..becuase it wasn't about the ride being fly..it was about being glad we had a ride! My best friend had an old ass delta 98 olds..loved to roll around with him..when this came out it was PERFECT!
PE was a conscious group...98 was an exception...not to mention even if PE did talk about just cars, money, etc...they could never be as whack as these m*&G&*fu*&%$# these days. PE was and still is one of the most influential hip-hop groups EVER. They set the bar and there hasn't been another group to hit on their level. (Maybe WU...MAYBE).
First heard of these guys in 1987 because of the Beastie Boys. These guys kill it. This is P.E.'s best song. Also saw them live from the front row of Nassau Colliseum in the late 80's.

Jesus fucking Christ, all you guys do is complain about current state of Hip-Hop, there was Hammer and Vanilla Ice back then too.
Theres plenty great stuff, you just need to know where to look, The Roots, Madlib, MF Doom fuck...

Why do people say that hip hop now sucks cause all they talk about is cars, money, etc and that we need to go back to old hip hop when back then they had songs about the same stuff?
GrisGrisOnUrDoorStep 2 years ago
cause today most of the wack rappers talk only about cars, money, bitches, etc.
we do not need to go back to old, but we need to go back to REAL!
