19 years old and man I love these guys. Luckily my parents are musos so I grew up listening to great music of the 70s, 80s, 90s and not the s*** thats on today. This was always my fav song :)
It odd, these guys had it also, but the Special made it......such a loss. What is it....just the lack of a real MoTown head to pull it all together. Specials / Beat / Selector & UB40 could have taken on the world & pushed some money back to Jamacia......such a crying shame.
@idoseadoo I did exactly the same, why do they never play this when they play 80's top 10's on dismal stations like 'Real Radio' ? We're sold a glimpse of the 80's about as representative of the music then as the TV programme 'Heartbeat' was of the 60's!
I dunno why the mods are so vocal with this band! Although there is a clear relationship between 80's ska and mod music we never saw The Beat as "mod" music. This was two tone, rude boy music and for us of the time a separate thing entirely. Mind you it is great dance music... still.
Excellent track, sort of sounds like The Smiths (the music) although it was before The Smiths. Reminds me of The Headmaster Ritual. Thanks for the up, class.
Another typical Youtube moron - s2trash takes the time to make and upload this vid just so this great song is actually available to youtube visitors and all you can do is whine because s2trash hasn't taken the time to make a suitable accompanying video - something which isn't even a problem. I and I imagine most others came here to enjoy the music, which more than speaks for itself, who gives a shit what photo or photos accompany it. Dickhead.
@Pepotamo1985 well said mate , i usually set a song going and look on the web elsewhere, once the songs playing who gives a shit what the video's doing.when the song finishes find another one, i quite looking at that scoot and lady on it anyway :-)
There was a US band called The Beat as well, so for the states, the band was forced to use an alternate name: The English Beat ... and was still known as The Beat in Europe.
some where around 1980! why they changed their name i don't know? they sure made some great music and some awful career choices. namely breaking up in 1983 when david bowie asked them to tour with him!
i saw this band in the summer of 1980 in boston mass! they kicked ass! they played a club on lansdown street i think it was called the metro back then!

Anyone think The Smiths might have been to a Beat gig or two? Jangly guitar, introspective lyrics sung off-beat... all works for me.
