I remember that storm. I was driving cab in Utica and had just finished my shift. I had planned on going to the State Fair and found out that they had canceled the final day because of it.
I lived in Baldwinsville at the time. I was 12. I went to bed not knowing we were in for a storm. I woke up the next morning and couldn't figure out how the hell this happened. It looked like a tornado had come through. I slept through the whole thing amazingly. My dad says the lighting was so frequent it couldn't be counted. Many strikes per second.
I am a California native but for 3 years I lived in Syracuse. How crazy is it that this occured on Labor Day during the State Fair? I remember that I was leaving the movie theather after just seeing the movie Deep Impact. It was the last showing at Carousel Center and when we emerged from mall, the sky was purple, lightening bolts continually flew from the sky, and winds blews like nothing I had ever seen. I remember thinking "this is the end of the world".
At the time I lived on Tipperary Hill (which was not very far from the State Fair), and we didn't have power for a week. Additionaly, we were one of houses on Willis Ave. that were blocked from both ends since trees and telephone poles had cut off the ability to drive on our street. Everyday we stocked our tub with ice, cases of corona and food that we had prepared on a propane.
I worked over the hill at Kirby's and the power was out there too (my roomates worked there as well), so there was no need to work. Because we didn't have a battery powered radio, we didn't realize just how devestating this storm was until our power was restored.
@JonPilat111 tho i was only 3 at the time i have seen pics and heard stories of the destruction my aunt was almost killed as a tree fell onto her room nearly 5 feet from her bed
I remember waking up about 45 minutes before it arrived in Syracuse and looking north to Oswego and seeing the constant lightning that lit up the sky. The lightning never stopped, and the distant thunder was also a constant roar. I thought "Wow, Oswego is really getting clobbered," but you know, our "crack" weather people never even warned us how bad it was going to get... you think they would have recognized the signs. Then the wind started and would not stop... then the horizontal rain hit!
I was thirteen when this hit and the thunder awoke me--I'm terrified of thunder--and Mom saw the lightning and thought it was the three days of darkness coming--the end of the world and was so creeped out. I slept in bed with her but we were both freaking out. The BJ store's wall in Auburn caved in!Strangely, I had a feeling it was some sort of tornado even though we didn't watch TV till the next day.
I was 2 years old and my dad told me that he ran across the hallway to bring me and my brother in 2 my mom and dads room and when he walked into my room he said I somehow got out of my crib and was on the floor and when I would try to get up the wind would blow me back to the wall and I would fall again he said the lighting would light up the room
i remember that storm in '98, just a couple of days before i started going to high school at Mt Markham. that was when my aunt margaret white ran over a live powerline when she was driving her truck to take me to school in west winfield on the first day of school at about 8:35AM in the morning. -- jon burr
@jburr1982 that live powerline that margaret ran over was located on the road on fairgrounds rd in west winfield where the electric company NYSEG was tryin to fix it when she ran over it.
in north syracuse we didnt have power all week until thursday i think. school was supposed to start on monday and we didnt have school all week. yeahhh lol
i live in co springs now, but at the time i was 10 and lived in baldwinsville. I remember looking out the window and only seeing bright flashes, i thought the shit was the bomb, especially since skool was closed for a few days. I remember one house in baldwinsville had a tree flatten that fucker.
I was only 4, but I remember looking out the window at it, and my mom shoved me in the closet because she saw a funnel cloud. It took days to help our relatives chop up all the trees that fell in their yard.
I remember that storm i was 6 years old, the thunder woke me and my family up and we thought for sure that a tornado was outside so we huddled in the bathroom in the center of my house because it has no windows, Crazy stuff.
i remember my dad waking us up when this was going on. he thought it was a tornado. i was only like 4. craziest shit i've ever seen in real life at least. we had no power but we could walk around because the lightning lit up the rooms XD the swimming pool in my garage was blowing all over the place because the door wasnt shut at the moment. it was scary but awesome at the same time.
This storm came together off the lake here in oswego just as we were going to bed.
I saw purple flashes and thought "Oh my God" just then, BAM Thunder, Rain, and in the repeated flashes as i was closing the windows, i DID see a funnel in the sky.
Have NOT seen anything like that since my visit to the mid west...indeed INTENSE.
Oh man ,12:50 am the lightning was nonstop it was like a strobe light. I went down stairs 5 mins later, turned on tv and scrolling on the tv screen was indeed a Tornado Warning for Onondaga County. Shortly after 1 am some of the loudest thunder I have ever heard hit. We were without power for where i lived in Onondaga County for a little over 100 hours. I was attending OCC at the time and only miss ed 1 day of classes following Labor Day. That was the most nerve wrecking storm ever to hit CNY.

I remember hearing about that storm. I had already moved away from Syracuse in 1996. I also heard that there were tornadoes involved.
