  • FANTASTIC ! Keep on playin', babe ! (from Switzerland)

  • Splendid playing! I'm familiar with the version by Doc Watson and Leo Kottke, but this is very good too.

Best wishes with your musical endeavors!

  • Very talented young lady!

  • Great job, you'd make Leo proud!

  • Marry me ?

  • Well the bridge is a little weak. But the main part is excellent.

  • Wow I am impressed. That is the best version, that I have heard. Really.

I am makin a version ready, that will be much different. 'Tis in the Dorian scale, but other innovations. Watch for it in a few months. I am usin one of Jimmy Arnold's guitars.

One thin, that has helped you here is the capturin is really good quality. I wonder how you got such good quality capturin. Care to comment?

  • I Wish I Could Play That. Great Job !

  • great job .

  • Macyn, I just chanced upon you on here last night, and I am absolutely bowled over by your ability on the guitar. Hearing you play that well just makes a lot of us feel inadequate, I'm sure! At the same time though, it's inspiring to watch and learn from. That's just how it is when you love this instrument. I take my hat off to you :D

  • Awesome!!!

  • By now you've probably found out that to be commercially successful, you may have to develop your singing...what a shame...promise you'll always keep making instrumental music.

By the way, where do your arrangements come from ? Learn from videos, or tabs, or listening to CDs, or what?

Did you ever compete at the national fingerpicking contest at Winfield? You should.

  • I learn from all of the above. I have never competed in the national fingerpicking contest in Winfield, but I know and have played with several of the past winners.

  • Bravo!!! Bravo, young lady!!! You make me so happy to know that this music that I've loved all my life will live long after I'm gone!!! Please, please keep playing - whether you get famous or not!!! All the best to you, dearie!!!

  • Nice work, very well done indeed. How'd you learn? Internet, TAB, or just by ear?

  • Howdy Macyn

    ok I'm hooked

i'm deffenitly a devoted Macyn Fan

    your a amazing

    keep up the great work

  • I've been watching all your posts for about a month, now, after you came up while I was Googling Leo Kottke. I've been officially "Macynized". I never know which to listen to first, as they're all fantastic. I've forwarded you to all my friends. When are you going to play NYC???

  • You were only 12????????????? Once in a while someone come along who astonishes everybody. I' m sure you are getting well used to compliments by now but anyway ---- YOU ARE FANTASTIC!

  • I DON'T KNOW WHETHER TO PRACTISE HARDER ..OR JUST GIVE UP !! YOU ARE A SERIOUSLY TALENTED YOUNG LADY...WELL DONE

  • ♫♪♫♪✓☺

  • Beautiful playing, so effortless and cool, yet spunky and joyful. Thank you!

  • Dude. This gets me so stoked. You're damn near as talented as leo when he wrote this song. Are you making more recordings/postings? I never have before, but I might just have to subscribe to you.

    : P

  • congrats, you have 1 more "pushin60groupie". gettin out the D-18 but callouses aren't there yet. friends hooked me up w/ a Hi-flyer & danlectro amp, so rite now jammin with Jimi, Earl King, Otis Rush on You tube, was folkie 1st but in hi school saw Bob Dylan do split concert ending 1st set with "All over now...Baby blue" came back onstage with Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, "the Band", and did "Blonde onBlonde " live. there were some boos, like until they cranked it & I was a believer

    u rock

  • wow. how old are you? can I wash your car? Are you the love child of Leo Kottke and Elizabeth Cotton? Seriously, I am so psyched that people are still excited about this stuff. when I was in college my girlfriend had a cheap record player that automatically replayed . we might have worn through John Henry Variations. easily. It played for days sometimes. but this album as I remember had the best cover of all.

you really know how to make an old hippy want to pull out his D-18.

  • I was 12 years old when this video was made. I'm 16 now. I don't have a car. I don't even have a driver's license yet. I love both Leo and Elizabeth, but they are not my parents. Get out that D-18!!!

  • Yes--your style makes it obvious that you picked it up from listening to Fahey rather than from Kottke. The two versions are quite distinct; Fahey's recording sounds more like a little cabbage-stacked American pulling a short consist through bayou country, while Kottke's is more like a high-wheeled Mikado running on the head end of a time freight over a Nebraska prairie.

  • wow!!! amazing job!! great playing. Keep it up, you'll be a virtuoso before you know it!! ;)

  • Very cool

  • I've been a huge fan of John Fahey for over 40 years and I must say you do an outstanding job on this. OUT-STANDING !!! I'm gonna' hafta' spend a lot of time on your channel. Good Stuff ! :-)) -wally

  • thanks for the reply.

  • Hey macyn! I have just turned onto you. I love you are playing. I'm an old guitar player who has been a pro for like 35 years. Primarily on electric. I have always playeacc and am gettin back into now. did you get this arrangement from fahey or kottke?

  • This is more like the Fahey arrangement. I play it a little more like Leo today.

  • fuck yeah!

  • Wonderful! I love it! That was so much fun.

    Rick

  • WOW! Awesome playing. Wish I could play like this!

  • Why can't you live around the corner from me :o)

  • One word..........WOW!

  • this the sound every guitarplayer searches for

  • Just spent an hour working this out off your video...thanks. Nice tempo to.

  • Awesome technique. But you need to focus on what you`re doing in the emotion dept. Don`t let your technique get in the way of what music is about: Conveying whats inside your head :) Way to go Macyn, You`re awesome :)

  • How bout some more, young Lady?

  • This is one great job, keep it up!

  • She is on the right road. I have been fingerpicking for some time and wish I had the "natural" talent.

  • Fantastic feel. Nicely done.

  • great. i´m envious.

  • That is some pick-in, I am out of breath, just from listening. : -) Played very nicely, did I see see you use your thumb on that top string like Jimi Hendrix used to do on the top 'strings' ? :40 and :48 ?? Truly a great job. The guitar has such a nice crisp sound. Can't imagine what you will be like a couple years down the road if you are this great now. WE SHALL SEE. Good Luck!!! *****stars + for me

  • BRAVO! BRAVISSIMA! (hand clapping) 5*****

  • I am absolutely amazed, because this piece of music played by people like Doc Watson, Marcel Dadi, not to forget Leo Kottke, requires some skills!!! Fantastic job!! and five stars only, cause there are not more to give, ha!

  • never heard a guitar ring like that.great playing.what kind of amp or sound system are you running through.

  • I don't know. I just remember they were recording it on a Mac computer. I did this a long time ago.

  • how much does a petros guitar cost?

  • Great as always!!!

    (^_^)v

  • That was great!

  • Wonderful! Terrific technique, excellent sound. Very precise picking. I admire anyone who has the patience and focus to play Leo note for note. Learning it from TAB (the John Stropes book?) must take incredible discipline. Keep up the good work!

  • This is great. How are you setting up your sound? What do you run your mike and guitar through to get them on your computer? Thx, Steve

  • Are you kidding me? ? Unreal.... you are AMAZING. (but you knew that already)

  • You will be unbelievable in 5 Years. Youre so young and already that good. Fabulous. Thanks

  • Your playing goes to show it's not necessary to have a lumberjack's grip to play a steel stringed flat top well. I love your voice too. I'm subscribing - hope you'll add more.

  • Wow - amazing. Keep 'em coming young lady. Sounds like Stefan Grossman. (from Pete, UK)

  • beautiful!!....what brand name is your guitar?...the bass is distinct

  • It's a Petros FS (finger-style) with Claro Walnut back and sides and Engelmann Spruce top. It has a Fishman Eclipse Blend System pickup. I was 12 years old when this video was made and I can't remember if it was plugged in or not. I really like this guitar.

  • Impressive playing!

  • I just had to move it to a full five stars, amazing talent

  • PARABÉNS VOCÊ É ÓTIMA

  • Very well done, I am working on that piece right now, hope to play it soon . Watching your clip helped a lot.

    Ride on

  • Perfect. Thank you!

  • It's a very clean version of this song.

  • this is pretty close to the john fahey version! great work

  • Thank you Macyn,

I live in Minneapolis, but mey drive to Wisconsin to see you perform in the next couple of months.

I am inspired by your talent.

  • I'm flattered by the compliment, thanks, but I wouldn't want you to waste your time and gas. There are much better guitar players than me right there in the Minneapolis area, like Leo Kottke, Pat Donahue, Peter Lang, to name a few. I'll try to post more YouTube videos after this semester. Thanks again for your interest.

  • Hi Macyn,

If you were 12 when you made the Steam Engine video, how old are you now, and where can one see you play. Also, how do you learn songs. Can you direct me to the tab or whatever you learned your version from. I am working on this song, but find that there are many versions and I am trying to piece together the best parts....that I think your version already has. I continue to be impressed with your talent and cannot relate to a 12 year old playing like that. Fantastic!

    Thanks

  • I am 14 now. I learned this song from a guy at school. I don't have the tab for it, but it is pretty much John Fahey's version. You can see my performance scedule on my MySpace page. The URL is on my busker12 YouTube page.

  • Amazing job, im a guitar picker myself, how long you been playin for? and do you write tabs?

  • I made this video when I was 12 years old. I started playing when I was seven. I don't usually write tabs, because I can't concentrate on my fingers and my pencil at the same time. :)

  • Ha I know what you mean, how did you learn this song? playin by ear I suppose, thats what I do mainly myself, it took me awhile to figure out how to read tablature

  • Another 5 stars, favorite and now I've subscribed. GREAT pickin'!

  • Is that you or Doc Watson? A year ago . . . You must be a time traveler. Enjoyed this, but keep singing!

  • Amazing job!

  • you almost sound like and ol black man

  • Are you in open tuning? If so, what chord?

  • Standard tuning

  • Very cool, nice right hand.

  • very disciplined performance perfect sound ,

    thats an a

  • absolutely breathtaking, thats all i can say. keep playing, please

  • S-M-O-K-I-N'!!!!!You go, girl!!!!

  • Don't go to college. Head for the subways of Paris, Grafton Street in Ireland, see the world through your talent. Don't let your parents read this. :-)

    Great!

  • Bravissima!!!

  • this is so good!

  • Whoa! I wasn't expecting that...amazing

  • Very good! I was expecting a disaster but it never happened. Keep it up!

  • My compliments.

Keep up the great work and post more

    of your playing.

  • I watched several of this girl's vids and she never ceases to impress.

  • nice playing:)

  • great!!

  • Brilliant playing ...a little bit more speed maybe?

  • Nope. That's how most people eff up this song - they think it's a speed contest. This is actually a perfect pace and rhythm.

  • Fantastic Petros guitar, love this version, but what really impresses me is the ease... This is how I would define "natural". Please keep sharing.

  • f***in awesome!!!!!!!

  • you are cute

  • Nice pickin'!

  • Great job. Clearest recording I've heard of this tune YT, too.

  • Very Cool!!!!

  • Very impressive. It was beautiful.

  • Holy pooo! That was AWESOME! You go GIRL! Keep up the good work. Later...

  • very impressive

  • Outstanding! I look forward to listening to you every time. You got a great complement below, too: paulsimko thought there were two guitars! Truly a sign you run with the big dogs.

  • Maybe you will open for John Prine some day! You are an amazing young woman, thanks for sharing!

  • this is one of the best Fahey covers I've seen, bloody fantastic

  • WOW. that was an awesome version. Leo Kottke would be proud. !!!

  • you couldnt see the other guitar!

  • i saw her live buddy.

    there is no other guitar.

  • oh my god! that was amazing.

Now i wanna marry you! ;)

  • WOW! Great stuff!!!

  • Wow, fantastic! It always warms my heart to see young people into this old acoustic music.

  • Nice work pickin! great.

  • Please let me know when you plan to release a CD. I'd love to buy a couple of copies. I've played fingerstyle guitar for 23 years now. Just watching your videos has gotten me back into it again!!! I was also self taught except for the few chords my Dad taught me when I was your age. I hae a few vids posted but you can tell I need to practice a bit more. I am in the process of buying an Epihone Joe Pass Emporer 2 this month. Couldn't afford a Petros. Keep up the awesome work!!!!!

  • so cool

  • Thanks for posting the song! You are great!!

    Would you share the tabs?

  • holy gwockamolie!

    my compliments and best wishes!!

and great guitar btw (is it a petros')

  • I am playing a Petros Claro Walnut and Englemann Spruce FS (finger-style) model with a Fishman Ellipse Matrix Blend pick-up. It's my favorite guitar. I love it!
