I've been on the liquid pre-op diet for 11 days now and I started doing this the other night. I cannot have ANY food on my diet...nothing that will not go through a straw, and I've had serious cravings!!! I slipped up a couple of times until I started this and now I can satisfy my cravings without slipping again!! I don't recommend this after surgery but right now it at least lets me put food in my mouth and pretend to eat it!!
This is a HORRIBLE method of avoiding high calorie intake and HIGHLY dangerous! I am dealing with this type of eating disorder while recovering from anorexia and it is such a shameful act. I besiege you. Please, do not start chewing and spitting. It can cause both physical and mental disorientation. It is truly a horrifying habit to break.
@HealthIsInPlease Some people believe that it makes you gain weight because even though you're chewing and spitting, your saliva is breaking down the food and some of it is swallowed. So if you c&s a whole box of cookies, you might get some calories. Also, when you're chewing your body releases acid into your stomache because it think's it's going to eat, but it's not, and with nothing to burn, it can burn your stomach and give you ulcers. Apparently gum can do the same thing.
I've been struggling with C/S for about 6 months now, and it's not benefited me in the slightest. You think it's fail proof and too good to be true. Well it is. I chew and spit large amounts of high sugar/high fat food. I have cavities in some of my teeth and the enamel is eroding away. It also gives you a puffy face because your glands swell when you are constantly spitting food out. I hate it and wish I could stop :(
Chew and spit is an eating disorder, not a diet. I can't believe this is being promoted like this. As someone who has struggled my whole life with this, I urge you not to start.
I am glad you don't like it! I hate it. I've spent thousands on my teeth, will probably end up with dentures in my 30's. I've had several crowns. The wear on your teeth is bad because with chew spit binges, many times people end up being exposed to more sugar than regular bulimia. I am saying this isn't a good behavior to start, it may sound innocent enough, but it is quite addictive. I am glad you hate it. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Sorry I offended you.
Be very careful, you all. Chewing and spitting is one of the behaviors common in those with anorexia. I'm not saying that all people who do this are anorexia or will become anorexic. But as a general rule, since we who have issues with food already have the base characteristics for food-related obesssions and addictions, it's probably wise to avoid behaviors that might result in another harmful condition. Just my two cents. Amelia, you look amazing!
While it's symptomatic of anorexia, if an individual only chews & spits they fall into the catagory of ED-NOS. Eating disorder not otherwise specified.
I think I would just be afraid that I would give in and EAT it, anyway. I was talking to my husband this morning about how I don't even remember the last time I had a cheeseburger. I miss them!
I actually don't have a lot of cravings either and have only done the chew and spit thing 4 or 5 times in the past seven months since my surgery. I have found healthy alternatives to most of the things I crave, but there is no healthy alternative to greasy sausage and gooey cheese.
Pizza is pizza whether here in the US or Mexico or China... but I do admit the pizza here in Chicago is pretty good... but that's how I got all fat so... Maybe pizza wasn't such a good idea... Chicago is the fattest city in the US!!! I think its the cold winters and the hot pizza!

It didn't have a enjoyable result so it is so moot. Kinda glad it wasn't good, i could see how it could get out of hand if it were enjoyable.

I have SO thought of doing this, but I just didn't have the guts to do it. I wonder if it would really help my cravings?

Let me rephrase that...
There is no healthy substitute that comes close to tasting the same as greasy sausage and gooey cheese.
